@@andrearchiecameron I wish I could be there. Thanks for your comments. I am sure this is one of the unforgettable experiences that one could ever could imagine ! ( I hope my english is clear, because it is not my native language ).
Elena was one of a kind Mezzo, sang with her soul.. and her voice was always recognizable, there was o other voice like hers. I have this film of Zeffirelli on DVD and have her in Carmen with Domingo from Vienna Opera. I always cry when I watch this film, she portrays the suffering of a scorned woman like nobody else.
Is she a mezzo? I ask because this role was originally written for spinto soprano and spinto are often mistaken for mezzo. I don't know about her for sure that's why I ask. But I totally agree she surely pours all that raw emotion here
@@BytomGirl I see. Well then it is interesting that they picked a mezzo to get to sing a piece for spinto but then again their voice timbre are pretty close so if the mezzo has good range she can sing this piece. I see. She died relatively recently then...
@@andity1 That is because the role is Spinto Soprano and spinto is a generally rarer fach than lyric or dramatic soprano so many roles that are alleged to spinto soprani are often sung by other fachs I admit I do not see a lot a mezzo singing the role of a spinto though. I usually see lyric or lyrico-dramatic soprani taking those parts instead. It makes sense for Santuzza though since she has some really good low notes here and there so yes I can see why
Tragedy is built deeply into the Russian soul, just take a look at Gogol (nope, not Google :)). This is why Russian artists make such great impersonations of dramatic roles. So emotional, so real, because it is felt and experienced first hand!
AmatureComposer is right about Barbieri, whose gotten up in her years. During the 80s she appeared in lots of movie and stage productions in roles we would never associate her with before: Giovanna in "Rigoletto," Bersi, and here as Mamma Lucia (which I have on DVD). I also own her EMI recording as Puccini's la Zia Principessa opposite de los Angeles's Suor Angelica; she's really distant and merciless there. Here she is regal but comforting; I hope Obraztsova picked up some pointers.
I was playing in the orchestra on this recording. She was FABULOUS. Every performance at La Scala had me in tears.
Wow!!! 🥰😍😍❤❣❣❣ What instrument did you play?
viola

So großartig gesungen....Interpretation Spitzenklasse.....Opernhimmel!!!
The best mezzo in the past 50 years.
She is class, sounds very old school,up there with simonata and cossotto for me.
Grandissima Elena Obraztsova ❤TVB❤RIP❤
Immenso mezzosoprano.
Barbieri as Mama Lucia it's EVERYTHING!!! 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍

@@katerinaaqu Santuzza is sung both by sopranos and mezzos. Many casts today are with a mezzo-soprano.

Grande voce e temperamento

je suis d'accord complètement avec vous. Pedro Felipe Lopez
Anyone know where I find this aria on UA-cam with subtitles in English?
It's on my other channel, Lino Anzoletti, with English, French, German, Spanish and Italian subtitles.
@badabing24601 she hasn't died! She's still alive and well! nothing could keep this spirit down.
@Pimprenelle1982 quanto è vero...

Her vibrato is... Eh.. Big!
Can’t help loving her anyway.
Hehe I believe that older schools did encourage intense vibrato more than nowadays but I think she also does it to show that she is crying
