A quick tutorial on this odd option that affects automation points.
Options: Preserve trailing values when recording automation
Did you know about this?
Basically, when this option is off, your last point value of automation will continue for the rest of the project. And when enabled, the envelope returns to the original value just ahead of where you are automating.
This option affects all write modes: write, latch, and touch.

A spring loaded fader or wheel (or a joystick ala Roland) does the same, I guess.
