Bach shows a Christian understanding of The Passion of Christ in this piece . It's a work not just to listen to, but to meditate on too. Bach is a genius .
❤❤❤
Can we all agree that María Espada elevated the entire performance? She's simply unmatched.
What a wonderful performance! What an outstanding orchestra! Bach's Matthäus Passion for sure is one of greatest pieces of music that exists in the world. Thank you .
Bravo to children choir singing Bach without sheet music !
I was one of the children during this concert. It was one of the most surreal moments I will ever experience and I don't think I realised that at the time. Iván was one of the best conductors I had the honour to sing with.
Ausgezeichnet wonderbar und Ich finde Jesu meiner Herr!
I never tire of listening to Matthew Passion - JS Bach from various choirs in the world.
Outstanding and impressive this very beautiful performance of Bach’s Matthew Passion played by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, which makes all your sorrows and troubles fade away, and heeling your soul.
As a member of the of the first violins, my wife played 40 years in this fantastic orchestra.
Thank you for your touching comment!!; I was in Amsterdam for only 2 days in 1979 from a far away country; took a bus to see the theater I loved on a very cold morning. I was embarrassed to ask to go in for a minute. ; fortunately I rushed to museums!!. Unforgettable orchestra and conductors!
A sublime performance by the Concertgebouw Orchestra, soloists and choirs. Nice of the children's choir that the singers knew how to sing the chorales without sheet music.
Great conductor. Great composer. His chords in the choir vary in a fantastic way.
And of course a great "wow" for al the mucisians and technicians. Resume: a wonderful performence. Thank you so much all of you.
Loved the children's choir and placement right at the centre
Brava to the Gambist!! Beautiful playing!!
Inspiring beauty and perfection on this Good Friday, thank you. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
Mark Padmore is surely the greatest Evangelist! Thank you Sir!
He was very impressive.
Beautiful, gentle sound for this ensemble. Some of the other renditions of this work are difficult to appreciate with headphones because of UA-cam's heavy compression. This one is very pleasant by comparison.
"Truly a Great Performance. Thanks to God."
The faces of the children at the beginning of the video were adorable. This placement of the children’s chorus really hooked me in.
Dit raakt mij zo diep, elke keer opnieuw.
Cheers for J.S.Bach ! and Glory and Vivat to Jesus-Christ and God !
The first commandment
That was good! and dignified, and so it should be!!
The conductor was lovely, his whole demeanour really appealed to me... his respectful standing there at the finish, as if preventing untimely applaus which seems a must these days 😢😢
Thanks so much for posting this! Still remember how tired and cold I was after standing on the stage for three hours performing this piece in a chilly night in a cathedral!
Amazing
What a magnificent experience. At times, almost unbearably lovely. Thank you Concertgebouworkest, soloists, choirs and, of course, conductor Fischer. Gloria in excelsis Deo.
how very appropriate to have stumbled to this extraordinary piece and being good friday morning
Easily ranks with the great ones! Well done, and God bless the Dutch. Fischer's absolute and firm control was wonderful. And whoever that young man (with the Roman nose!) was, he was an inspiration - I hope he's still alive to read this. Chicago, USA
Underbart framförande !
Tack, det växte hela tiden
till en gripande avslutning.
Tack Ivan Fisher !
Beautiful. Saludos desde Guatemala Centroamérica.
I listened to this wonderful rendition in the company of a childhood friend of mine whose younger brother passed away three days ago due to Covid and I came back to our native place from my city of employment of more than 1000 kms away for attending his brother's burial ceremony. My friend knows only our vernacular language but due to my regular coming back on leave and listening to western classical music along with me I made him a fan of your fine music. After our listening to your recital of Mathau's passion I found him far removed from his grief about his brother's departure. When I asked him about his opinion about the rendition he remarked: " when you post your comments don't forget to write about my gratitude for the nearly three hours of spending my life in heavenly pleasures , forgetting the permanent grief about my loss of the only (young) brother". Yes,as I replied to you "your wish is my command ", I have done my duty and your opinion about this wonderful rendition is mine also.Great upload! Thanks.
Thank you for sharing this!! ❤️ And best wishes to your friend that he found or finds some peace.

Like we’re talking about the godfather of western music, very simple
With Marc Padmore as Evangelist and Peter Harvey you just can't go wrong. Always a pleasure to listen to them, here and also in the performance of the St. John-Passion at the Proms conducted by Gardiner.
Dear Concertgebouworkest, hartelijk bedankt for this wonderful performance.

Concertgebouw looks perfect as a place for the double choir and orchestra!
Thank you so much for this today!! This work is just sooo epic... & during BACH's birthday week too!! 💙💜❤️
An honest, wholesome rendering of this magnus opus. Many thanks for posting in time for the Easter week. Jesus Passion was particularly well presented. The children's choir was lovely. This music is probably the best, most complex music ever composed. And one of the most beautiful and dramatic.
hello jorge hoy do joy do ? 🙌great look please ; ua-cam.com/video/KD1bQeeEo9M/v-deo.html
@@jvdb0001 Thanks Jan for the link to fast piano, impressive. Rather too much perhaps?
Opening- and finalchorus of St. Matthew Passion sais everything of Bach
Gracias.
Beautiful interpretation!!; this exceptional orchestra and Bach’s humanistic values!! Thank you!!
Tears in my eyes, every time I hear the St. Matthew Passion. This is and exceptional performance.
THANK FOR THIS GIFT.
This is terrific. I caught the last 20mins when it was streamed, and then it cut out after 5mins when I tried going back to the start - because it was only a stream. I feared it wasn't going to appear as a recording. In the past week, YT has offered various other versions as suggestions, but this was the only one I wanted to hear. Now it's here. Stunning! I had no idea Luc Besson had such a fantastic tenor voice (OK, I know it was Mark Padmore)! Thank you, everyone.
Love Bach!!!! Wonderful Music!!!
Beautiful.
magnifique interprétation
Thank You for this wonderful music.
Beautiful! Very moving. Thank you.
Bach forever ❤
1:45:39 always jumps me in my seat
Nice concert' 👍😀
Great Performance. Thank you !
I think it would be tempting to imagine how the Thomas Cantor’s St Matthew Passion would sound, had Bach all of today’s standard means at his disposal, from modern instruments to optimal choir size and superb soloists, without all those known and often unnerving limitations he had to contend with. My conclusion is that the result would come very close to what Ivan Fischer and his Concertgebouw forces are offering us in this performance of “the greatest music achievement before The Ring of the Nibelungs” (Malcolm Boyd).
Wonderful concert!
Thanks for post✨
stupenda esecuzione bravissimi complimenti
A great Easter gift from this incomparably great ensemble. Just beautifully done on all levels.
great look please ; ua-cam.com/video/KD1bQeeEo9M/v-deo.html🥰🥰
Great performance!
Großartig 👏
FINALLY a comment in German! Refreshing, where are they?
Unspeakably beautiful. I heartily approve of the use of mezzos instead of countertenors. There was no such thing as a countertenor in Bach's time and place. The Italians used castrati, but Bach never wrote for castratis.
learned. Thanks!
Counter-tenor doesn't require castrato. There are males of youth, and some number of males of full age who simply keep the capacity to strike these notes. And castrati would have traveled, and were known from classical literature. As to Bach writing for them, if you can hit the notes, he wrote for you.
Couldn't agree more re counter tenors ,who shouldn't be allowed anywhere near Erbarme dich.
But what was Peter Harvey, who was supposed to be singing Christus, doing singing the bass aria Mache dich ,mein Herze, rein? The words don't make sense ,not to me at least,if they are being sung by Christus.
Or ,for that matter why was the Evangelist singing some of the tenor arias?
Although ,as it was Mark Padmore,I wouldn't complain too much about that.
However, these inconsistencies ,apparently without reason, spoilt things a bit for me.
Perhaps someone could give me reasons why they did this, and then I'd be able to watch it again.
@@barryjohnstone9124 I agree that it was a little strange to see Mark Padmore and Peter Harvey singing arias out of character but I just think of it as actors playing multiple parts. When Peter Harvey is standing on the red podium he's Jesus, when he's not he's not.
@@barryjohnstone9124 Not that quite understand what you say/mean, I do like you wanting 'things' right in detail!, because certainly in something sacred like the Matthew Passion it does matter
Beautiful. A pity no subtitles which are absolutely necessary in a piece like this
Merci 💐🤪🐭🙏🏿💚🇫🇷🐈

Magnific and apocalyptic music
Would love to see the names of the soloists in the description . I recognise some

After 1:53:30 this thing explodes like like nothing else ever!
Me encanta María Espada.
Por otro lado, como diría Bu🌷kowski, this is a tulip.
How... peculiar to have the viola da gamba and cello play "Geduld" in unison. But nobody ever accused Fischer of making weak choices!
Yes, but I must admit that I do prefer it with just the gamba. It has such a unique sound.
@@Lepewhi as do I
🥱 Bach Johannes Passion for a change..
This performance reminisces to around 50 years back - the pace has been reduced, careful expression - almost von Karajan
Could you say performances of the Matthaüs-Passion have sped up the last decades?
Is that the organist who plays with the Netherlands Bach Society?
Sind Blitze, sind Donner in Wolken verschwunden?

My favorite.
@@passerineblue It reminds me of Verdi's Dies Irae :)
That harmony at 1:29 - does anyone know what it is? It happens again at 5:43..... and again at 6:08... and again at 7:37....

@@gilberteloneux688 Merci.....
My interpretation is this: The key in the first half of that bar is A minor, which gives the pedal note of the chord, A; but it's juxtaposed against a diminished chord which has the effect of the dominant, because it has the B and G# of E major strongly singing out at the top. So there are two quavers of the jarring harmony you highlight, and the third quaver of the group is the expected A minor. A shorter way of saying it would be an E major 13th chord with an A instead of an E at the bottom!

❤ Jesus gave His life for all of us out of deep love. When you believe, that Jesus has conquered the death and that He is the Son of the living God, then your soul is saved to live for eternity in heaven with Jesus! Ask Him, He will confirm it. See John 3:16. ❤
Himmlisch…
Sucks the life right out of it. This music is designed to convey the ultimate in emotion, yet this in Bach on Prozac
Koude rillingen.
A great performance, but the recording is rather poor.
Isn't all of this a bit to "massive" to be right?
From the first few notes, without even seeing the instruments, I could tell this is a modern-instrument performance. What a disappointment. I'm spoiled by the beautiful sound of period-instrument performances of Bach's works.
"Erbarme Dich" has to played with your heart and carried out with a slower tempo and with passion like the name of BWV 244 : "PASSION". My God.......cruel. Misguided. Please listen to Klemperer or RICHTER!
"Wahrlich dieser ist Gottes Sohn gewesen!"- why with such a fast tempo? What means grief? Horrible....Aweful.
