Out of fourteen punches thrown by Azumah, twelve landed flush in the last nine seconds before the fight was stopped. Jessie threw none and really could not avoid Nelson's punches, so Richard Steele's refereeing was impeccable.
Leija lost this fight but he ended up beating Nelson two years later in the last of their four fights and compiling 2-1-1 record against The Professor. He doesn't get much credit but Leija was a terrific little fighter.
@Adrianmc78 yeah he was done, and he knew it. He wasn't throwing back and he was wobbling around on week legs. This was the right call not just because of the cut but because of the beating he was taking.
Richard Steele belongs in the amatuers refereeing fights. He too safety concious. However I seriously doubt the outcome of this fight was going to be anything other than a Nelson victory. Leija was weakening and badly cut. Actually Steele really saved him from further damage. I just like seeing fighters go out on their backs.
@TheMexHurricane yes, I like seeing fighters go out on their backs, i.e. I don't like quick stoppages. I didn't say I like to see fighters get killed. Steele has a habit in my opinion of stopping fights too quickly. It's a brutal sport: some say it should be abolished. All I know is as long as its legal I want to see throwdowns.
Funny thing about referee stoppages is that you can tell by the amount of resistance the fighter can/will put up to the call. Leija knew it was the right call, he was 1 punch from being KO'd.
+Stephen Donatelli ..Pernell was great so was Nelson .. have to say Azumah was 33 vs a 26 PEAK Pernell....both at their peak Pernell would have *just * had the edge
First of all, niggas, huge Pernell fan, but the fight was very close. PW won, but he didn't really school him by any means.. Second, age didn't matter a thing in that bout. AN fought till he was 40 (39 and a couple of days, whatever, plus a rematch 10 years later) and PW fought till he was 33 (2 years after was Trinidad and 2 more after for Carlos). 40 minus 33? 7. 33 minus 26? 7. Different fighters prime at different points
This is really the tight man in boxing.Prof.Ghana and Africa is proud of you.Unlike the useless Ike Quartey who always is found runni g around in the ring for sheltet.Ike Quarteu is a disgracr to boxing fraternity in Africa.
Peace Bro until? I guess you have to take basic grammar lessons. Sanchez was Nelson's first fight in America and he took that fight on short notice as a replacement for another fighter. He acquited himself very well in that fight. Sanchez when everyone in boxing thought it was going an easy fight. We all know what happened after. Azumah went on to dominate the division for many years. You guys should get over your hatred for Azumah because he whipped your boxers.
Azumah one of the greatest in the history of boxing
Great fight. Thanks for posting! Now I am off to look for the 4th fight.
