- Do we NEED Compact Cameras in 2022?
This week I dragged my sorry carcass out of bed for a sunrise shoot at the coast using only the Canon Powershot G10.

People are too damn fussy when it comes to cameras. Buy the one you can afford and use the one you're most comfortable with. If you nail the composition, intrigue the viewer and add a sense of story to an image, it really doesn't matter what camera you use - especially when most people ONLY post on limited resolution social media platforms. If you're printing extra large in order to sell prints, then that's a different matter and a topic for another discussion. Good vid, David! 😀👍
Thanks, Sam. I do find it odd when people strive to buy the latest 5 grand camera with all the megapixels and post only to social media 🤣
I've printed from the Sony a7s at 12 mpx and the Nikon d800 at 36 mpx and up to A3 which is the largest I print, you can't tell the difference at a normal viewing distance. Marketing is powerful stuff 🖖😁
I received Canon G10 as a gift when it was newly released. It was a little powerhouse back then and got me to start photography. It was my go-to point and shoot for a long time until I acquired Ricoh GRII and recently the original Leica Q. G10 really setup the standard of how I chose my point and shoot.
For people like us, having a manual exposure camera in a pocket to shoot anywhere and anytimre is a real pleasure. As I grew older, I tended to come back for a smaller camera with a single lens. I have a feeling more premium compact camera is on the way as people theseday prefer to travel light.
The G10 is pretty great as a companion to a 35mm film camera for landscaps, especially if you use the filter adapter. With some ND grads, you can really get quite a bit out of that little sensor.
Its nice to have a compact camera that you can just slip into your pocket when ever you go out, just in case you see anything worth photographing. I currently use a Sony A7, A6000 and my compact is the original RX100. The image quality of the RX100 is brilliant and I love using it.
I've been looking at the original RX100 and I suspect it'll become part of my collection soon. Thanks for watching 🖖
Its about the results that count. No matter what camera you use as a weapon of choice. Limitations can spark creativity breaking free from norms. Thanks again David.
The thing that I've found with these cameras is that while our phones are very capable, they still don't come close to the image quality of many of these compacts. Thanks for watching mate 🖖
Nice one! Love the long exposure 🖖🏻
Thanks Alex. Having a built in nd filter really helped there🖖
Nice video David. That Chris seems like a right legend.
He's alright in 'small' doses 😂
I was like Chris just a few months ago, a full frame sensor snob, up until seeing a video of one of my favourite landscape photographers (Charlie Waite) using a Lumix LX5.
That eureka moment when I thought if a digicam is good enough for Charlie Waite, it's more than good enough for me!
I have bought a selection of cheap digicams since and have rediscovered my love of photography, a Canon G11, a canon s95 and a Lumix LX5 have found their way into my camera bag for less than £150.
I agree with you about that 'something' the older CCD sensors produce, even as you say, the digital noise which is not unpleasant, especially in Black and white images.
Well in Chris' defense, his dislike of the G10 was somewhat exaggerated for the video 😁
Chris himself is a keen user of older DSLRs etc. (He is an L glass snob though😂)
I've been looking at the LX3 and LX5 and I expect one of them will end up in my collection at some point.
For me, the G10 gives me a different way of approaching photography, especially Street as it's such a discreet camera. I love my 'pro' gear when it's needed, but for social media, these UA-cam videos and just fun snaps, the G10 is pretty much always with me. Thanks for watching 🖖
Full frame for the win boys! Unless I’m using any of my cameras that don’t have a full frame sensor… size doesn’t matter. So she says.
Inspiring.
if you can, get your hands on a Canon S95 - shoots raw and is even more pocketable than the G10.
Each to their own, but for me, whatever you've got to use is just wonderful. I often use my phone(s) if they are to hand, especially for Monochrome photography & from next week i'll also be using (quite a lot hopefully) a Sony Cybershot (S650) and trying that out in various places. :)
So yes, Digicams and in fact pretty much "Anything" that's photo capable is absolutely usable. It's fun, you're always learning new things and meeting wonderful people and now and again, you get a really nice picture or two.
Oh, and as a caveat (kind of) i only ever shoot in jpeg as i just prefer it that way. Thanks for another great video in such a wonderful location. :)
Absolutely agree. I think there's far too much emphasis on having great gear as opposed to just enjoying the process your way, especially here on UA-cam. Thanks for watching 🖖
Very awesom. How to shoot with G10 and get very sharp photos like yours?
My settings for the g10 are very simple. I use P mode with exposure compensation set to -1/3 or 2/3 of a stop to protect the highlights. I use single point focus set to the centre of the frame and usually just focus and recompose if needed. Auto wb and iso set to 80🖖
@David Flower OK, Thanks a lot
I always do the same,
Maybe my G11 is low resolution than G10 ( 10 vs 14 megapixel ) 😁✌️so, i assume that means in term of image quality G10 might be better than G11
G10 and g12 which is better?
I’ve not used the G12 so I don’t know. Based on what I read regarding the difference, the G12 has lower resolution and the reason for this was to improve low light performance, but again I’ve not used it so I don’t know if it’s a significant difference 🖖
Let's all take a moment to just observe how delicious is this video! 🫡
Very kind of you. Thanks for watching 🖖😁
Chris is a Snob...or plays one.
Love Digi-cams and have missed having one after a few years back my always faithful, always in my pocket ready for a capture, died after pointing it at the Sun.
I prefer the true 'Shirt Pocket' variety' like my recently acquired beautiful little Lumix DMC-ZS10 from 2011. A camera that has amazing abilities for something so small and so old. It has a pretty steep learning curve, but will persevere and get handy with it.
I still have all my old digital cameras, even the dead ones. Of the ones I still occasionally shoot with is my first digital camera from 2004, a Canon 'PowerShot' G5. Great little camera, but not a pocket camera unless you are wearing a jacket or safari pants and then maybe.
Neat Post and some great shots...Who knew...I did.
Chris being anti compact was just a bit of fun, he actually quite likes the G10😂
One of my more recent additions was the lumix lx3 (very kindly given to me by a viewer) and that wins hands down when it comes to size vs the G10.
What I love about the G10 though is that zoom range and how good the raw files look.
Thanks for watching 🖖
I picked up a G10 from a thrift store and I thought I'd resell it. But after using it for awhile I'm loving it. There's something about it that I think is special. I like the solid feel of the camera and the look of the images. I usually use a SONY a6000 manually with a variety of vintage lenses. Thanks for the video !!
It's crazy how good the G10 is! Thanks for watching 🖖
Hi Robert, can you recommend any vintage lenses for the a6000? Want to try and achieve a bit of a vintage look
I bought a CANON G15 yesterday. the cam is pure fun! Its more than 10 years old. I’m looking forward to do a more daytime shots in the streets
👏👏👏👏👏👏
I'm loving your channel!
For me the point and shoot cameras are a practical thing. I search for VERY small, long zoom cameras. Something like the Sony WX100 with a 25-250mm lens in the size of a credit card, there are some Canon cameras with a 25-300mm, and the Sony WX350 with the 25-500mm and slightly bigger. Panasonic and Nikon have such kind of cameras too. I can carry it with me all the time, it's pocketable even in skinny jeans, and it's dirt cheap. The image quality is better that the one my smartphone produce and Lightroom works very well with JPEG.
The Sony it's FAST and works flawlessly.
I have Sony mirrorless too, but they can be bulky sometimes, even my RX100 is bigger than I need for a pocket camera
Thanks for watching!
I love the ccd sensors in a lot of the older point and shoot cameras, they have such a cool look. I’ll have to take a look at the Sony WX cameras, a long zoom like that sounds great.
@@DavidFlowerOfficial the WX100 (that I had) have a CMOS sensor. The great thing about the camera is that is very small, like a toy. But the images delivers good results. The camera have not manual controls, nothing, only you choose mode and control the zoom, but is other kind of experience. Try it! Wx100, wx220, etc.
I have Canon Powershot S95, bought in 2012, and still use it like a pro 😁 shoot in raw, lowlight, etc. It was high end compact camera at the time. The image quality is so good for a little camera(it's CCD sensor). I printed some of the images too with S95, it has 10 megapixels, but that's enough for printing in A4 or A3, and the result is quite decent too. Just like Lumix LX5. Even I don't see the different between the S95 and micro 4/3 camera in printing result.
I have another compact camera, Canon Powershot G1X, the sensor size is pretty big (1.5") Almost as big as the apsc, but so the camera. It's too big to put in a pocket. For me, the purpose of compact camera, they must be pocketable. I'd rather bring my mirrorless if my compact camera is too big to put in a pocket.
Did you print any photos by G10? Are they look good? Very nice video btw!
I've read a lot of good things about the s95 and it's on my list to add to the collection. I haven't printed anything from the G10 yet, but I had some comments regarding prints on my Instagram so I'm thinking about putting together a video comparing them to apsc and FF prints. Thanks for watching 🖖
the s95 is the same camera internal specifications as the canon g12...
Got an old G12 and a new Z50 last year. For some reason, I lean towards picking the G12 in most days when I shoot.
Yeah the G10 is pretty much always in my bag and it’s a really nice camera to use🖖
That looked ace out there David, nice light, the sea, sand, pebbles, and the shots weren't bad either!!! I'm joking, they were great, you'd never know what you'd taken them on if you hadn't said. I guess I do indulge in a little camera snobbery, not towards compacts, I think those are ace, but towards mobile phones, and you've proved that an unjust prejudice with your Google Pixel whatever number it is. Another cool video, keep em coming.
Cheers, Tim. Even the pixel has the "phone look" in some lighting situations, but compacts, especially ones like the G10 produce lovely image files. I do love the coast, it's just the getting up before the gods that I don't enjoy 🤣
Thanks for watching, mate 🖖
love this video, David!
Thanks very much for watching. Enjoy the rest of your day 🖖😁
I shoot with the Canon S100 as well as the G10. Both shoot raw and are awesome to easily carry around in your pocket. I’ve always had a love for the S100. It is in my bag with my 90D and ir converted 60D. Enough for my needs.
I assume the S100 is the successor of the S95? I’ve had a fair few people say how much they love that model. I haven’t looked into that range of compact cameras but they seem very popular. Thanks for watching 🖖
Excellent watch Dave! Really entertaining and some lovely shots. You picked a good morning for it, looked beautiful.
Cheers Mike. It was lovely apart from the getting up bit🤣
Hi dave great channel, looking for a nice beginners camera would you recommend this one tou use please
I expect any compact like the Canon G10 would be a great beginner camera. Thanks for watching 🖖
