  • The Generac standby generator will finally be run in a video! Along with running it, we will see how it performs with powering the house by stimulating a scenario where it would be needed.
**A lot of people have been asking me why it doesn't power the entire house. I cannot remember the exact words the guy said, but the generator is already one of the highest ones. To have something that would power the entire house, it would have cost about twice as much as this did, and this was expensive as it was already. What we currently have already powers all of the important things, such as the refrigerator, furnace, and radon fans, and other stuff you see in this video. That's what matters the most.
A good example is, This house also has a separate air conditioner for each floor (the way it should be), having just one get started already puts quite a load on this generator as it is. So, if it had to power both of them, you can imagine just how much more power would be required for that to happen.**

Update: Both air conditioners are now on the generator, and they have hard-start kits installed to help give them a boost. Just recently, there was a short outage, everything did very well! The cabana is also on it as well which means it runs a second refrigerator, and attic fan.

Instead of hard start, you should check out soft start kits. They are more expensive ($250/device), but they are much better for your compressor motor. Search for "Hyper Engineering SureStart".

great video; we just installed the same 22Kwh on partial panel as well - we have 2x 200A panels, and we turned one panel into the emergency panel. This powers 2 AC units, de-humidifier, all lights on the 1st floor, well pump, sump pumps, and some other lights on the 2nd floor. Cost differential between the largest residential (22k) and an entry commercial (32k) is indeed double the cost (12k v. 24k or so). In NC, for the few times we have power outage, the incremental benefit, does not outweigh the incremental cost. Total sqft of the house is 9800 with 3 AC units; only 2 are connected (basement one never turns on).

It would be nice to have one to run our heat and air conditioning and everything that’s needed. It would be worth the money even though we don’t lose power that much. Looks like a decent setup! The only thing that would be a major improvement, is having the washer and dryer included in generator power. Being a gas dryer, seems like the generator could handle the Speed Queen set. Especially, if you were to wash one load, and then dry it with only one machine running at a time. How is the back area coming along?

Quick question. I have a 10kw so when mine turns on randomly for 5 minutes, it's normal? Also, there is a switch that says "Generator disconnect" on the generator itself. If I turn that off, does that turn off the generator entirely?

    • @brnmcc01
      @brnmcc01 3 роки тому

That's probably the weekly 5 min exercise, you can get into the settings on the evolution controller and choose a time/day of week for the exercise to a different time if it bugs you. Should not be starting randomly, unless you're getting very brief power outages. The small switch on the back of the generator disables it from starting, and sets an error code on the controller. Don't turn off that switch unless you really need to. Better to open the lid and turn off the breaker, wait 1 minute then press the stop button on the controller if you need to shut it down during a very long power outage to check oil, do maintenance or whatever. The little rocker switch on the outside is just for emergencies only.

A one line diagram would greatly improve your video. You could point out the circuit breakers on the one line as you walked your audience through the operation. A further enhancement would be light dash lines to coils from switches that operate the xfer sw. I lived and died for 50 years designing and using one lines to operate power and control systems. I had to make my own as connection diagrams are all that Generac furnishes. I did it because I wanted to understand a manual transfer if the TS failed to operate during hurricane season.

My transfer switch powers the whole house no sub panel for the generator I had it installed that way and I just turn off the breakers I don't need we have absolutely no problem at all and I run two AC'S I marked all the breakers different colors
Green for vital circuits , yellow for nice to have if you need them and red for ya don't need them so you trun off all red and yellow breakers and you turn on and off the yellow breakers as you need the
Them. That is the way we do in the Navy when we run the emergency generators
So with you generator running and everything turned how many amps does everything draw ? That is how you load test the generator. Just remember that a motor draws more amps when it starts than when it is running . Good video , you have a nice place you might consider finding out what is the max amperage the generator will handle and have a Amp gauge installed so you can manage your load better and you may find out that you can power up more than you have.

My generac 9kw generator started it no problem before installing that, but it did bog it down a bit. It does have a surge capability of 70 amps which is barely enough. After installing the soft starter, it barely changes the sound of the generator. I’m up in Plano and what saved us from complete caveman living was a Goal Zero Yeti 1400 inverter/lithium battery with 400W of solar panels. It’s all portable and plug and play. We were able to keep the unit charged using solar while running refrigerator and small electrical the first day. Second day was cloudy and we had about 25% incoming solar so we were thankful for the intermittent grid power. Wouldn’t of course keep a pool pump running or a furnace blower. They do sell lead acid battery banks for storing back up power similar to the Tesla power wall (which is Li) concept. Of course they are far smaller batteries in kW but modular. I have about $4000 invested in this solar rig, but am planning to add the Generac 22kW since we already have large gas line for pool furnace. The solar then is a backup in the event they shut off the natural gas. As I understand it that would be dire circumstances and occur only if entire gas delivery de-pressurized which it almost did. based on odds I would invest in the generator and in time add some limited solar capability to get by on basics. Goal Zero is the Apple of the portable solar world, high quality, nice EZ human interfaces. Good luck.

I just had a 16 year old 12kW Generac backup generator (10kW on natural gas) replaced with a 22kw (20kW on natural gas) whole house Generac unit. The old unit had a subpanel that would only power 12 circuits so we had to prioritize what would be energized during an outage. We couldn't run the central A/C or the ovens or dryer. However the furnace, sump pump, refrigerator, most lights, garage door openers, microwave, toaster oven and outside outlets were energized. The new unit can energize all the house circuits but we can't run everything all at once.since our normal utility service is 36kW and the generator is rated at 20kW on natural gas. Still really beats being without power. The new generator seems to be producing a cleaner power which doesn't upset the uninterruptible power supply units which found the output of the old generator somewhat objectionable. If your house has 200 Amp service you have a maximal potential utility supply of 48kW suggesting a greater need to prioritize than I have.

Does yours have a status screen like mine? Maybe it will tell you why.

Hi Sharky. I am one of your blind viewers. I have a Generac standby generator. Mine is a 14 kW. I was just curious. If your power were to go out in bad weather, how does the generator receive a signal that the power has been cut?

I don't quite know the specifics of how it knows when power loss happens. My guess is, something in the transfer switch panel detects it, and tell the generator to start.

your house must be huge, our generac powers our 2400 s.f. house and an inground pool filter, 3 refrigerators, the furnace and the central air conditioner. We only have one central air conditioner unit though. We can turn off the pool filter during an outage though if we want to.

As of last year we do have both air conditioners on it now. I plan to put hard-start kits on them. Should help.

Not sure what tonnage ac units you have but I have a 3ton and a 1.5ton that my 20kw Kolher can start at the same time. We put the entire house on ours. Granted we have a load shed device on our one on demand hot water heater by PCP products (no control wire needed) works better than the generic units. 50gal water heater still on generator though.

I think they are both 3 and a half.

You need a gas fueled water heater. Get rid of the electric water heater when it's old enough to be worthwhile replacing it. That's extremely silly to burn fuel in a generator, to produce electricity to heat water with. 10x better off to just burn the gas in the water heater directly and eliminate that middleman of the generator. Generators are only about 20-25% efficient converting that gas into electrical energy. The rest gets wasted as heat, and heat out of the exhaust pipe.

Can you run the humidifier while running the ac, so you have cool humid air?

You could, but there would be no purpose here. This part of the US has higher humidity levels than others.
