    This was posted while we were in Quetico so I missed it. Very pleasant and relaxing watch...but really dampened my enthusiasm for the winter camping season lol. Especially thinking about those empty lakes with no guests---ugh. I paddled this weekend and now I'm already jonesing. Great to know about this access point too. I've never flown in but I have a strong preference for being in complete control of my own entry and exit. Though it sucks to have to do all those ports both ways. Maybe a good spring entry point when the creek is high. I imagine that very awkward 2m portage would be easier if nothing else 😆 Lastly, loved the barbless, of course! 👍👍👍

    • @KevinOutdoors
      @KevinOutdoors  3 роки тому

      Thanks Jon, all these years I have never had a barb stuck in myself, and I am a pretty sloppy angler. 😜 Your video made me realize I have been living on borrowed time. I have really mixed emotions about the fly-in camps in Wabakimi. My wife and I did a big 14 day trip there before we were married. We found the number of motor boats and frequency of lodges a bit beyond what we like in a canoe trip. But I really feel for those camp owners this year. I know they usually have 85-90% occupancy rates and U.S. visitors, now mostly families and extended families, come back year after year. So many businesses without any income and so many people without their annual 'nature fix'.

    I'm all for pinching the barbs, especially if you're one of those catch and release people, but I question wether to keep the middle or the tail hook. Ive seen some good video of pike and Bass striking from the head. It's obvious, when you think about it, because they want to swallow fish head first to avoid the fins sticking them in the throat. It's why they're so sharp after all. So I believe the tail should go, but, to be honest, I've yet to remove any.
    Everyone should eat more pike, btw. All those buggers do is eat trout all day. Takes some of the pressure off them if we eat pike. They're pretty good, and when you learn how to fillet them properly, even small ones are totally great eating.

    • @KevinOutdoors
      @KevinOutdoors  4 роки тому

      Thanks again Jim, again, I am just experimenting. It does make sense that fish would strike at the head. I've never seen a fish eat another fish tail first.

    Hi Kevin, I see you are running with a new tent, what did you replace your Big Agnes with, and is it keeping you dry? Your powdered eggs, do you make your own or get the ones sold in the baking section of grocery stores? I like your use of drones for scouting for portage trails, I noticed that Jon from Backcountry Angling does the same, might be going that way myself as it seems really effective when operating in less traveled areas. Thanks, Jerry

    • @KevinOutdoors
      @KevinOutdoors  4 роки тому

      HI Jerry, no it isn't a new tent I still have my Big Agnes tents. Since the BA tents are so expensive I keep those for backpacking. The two person MSR tent you see is the one I bring most often for canoe trips and I have had it for quite a while. I find no tent lasts forever, the UV light breaks them down, roughly I would say you get 500-700 days of sunshine out of a tent. Reserving the BA tents just for backpacking is my way of saving a few bucks over the long run.
      I buy those powdered eggs the brand is OvaEasy. They are a freeze dried crystal egg and are hard to tell from fresh. I know we have a dozen chickens :)
      Yes I brought the drone just for the video images but I found that on this trip it was great for scouting my portages.

    Wonderfully relaxing video. You have a great style. Nice to see the drone up in the air. I love using my drone. I wish the Parks weren't so anal-retentive about using them in their (actually our) space. How else could we enjoy such lofty sights (unless you fly over with a noisy bushplane ... which is of course legal)?

    • @KevinOutdoors
      @KevinOutdoors  Рік тому +1

      The laws in National Parks are very different than Provincial Parks. National parks actually have restricted air space and the legislation specifies drones. The legislation governing Provincial Parks is quite different, there is no restricted airspace and it only refers to 'aircraft' and doesn't specify drones. And, in Canada any flying craft smaller than 260g is neither an aircraft or a drone.

    Nice trip through the back door of Wabakimi! Wouldn't mind trying that one out as we live in eastern Manitoba and would be drivable. Time to replace my 30 year old composite Blue Water 16' Prospector and want to carefully consider other hull designs and your Souris River Quetico 16 caught my eye. Looks like a decent flat water tripping canoe, would be interesting in hearing your review of it after your maiden voyage (primary/secondary stability, tracking, etc). We do have some rapids on the rivers here though and not so sure this would be a good choice for anything but flat water. What's your understanding?

    • @KevinOutdoors
      @KevinOutdoors  3 роки тому +1

      Excellent questions. The boat as you can imagine tracks very well. Although it is symmetrical I find the front is still a bit out of balance when I paddle solo backward. I am contemplating adding another removable seat that would get my weight closer to the centre for solo tripping. I would probably take this down some class 1 rapids if they weren't too bony but the boat isn't ideal for that. They do make a prospector style as well with 2 more inches of rocker.

    • @KevinOutdoors
      @KevinOutdoors  3 роки тому +1

      That is a good question. They are certainly not allowed in National Parks. I am a licensed drone pilot and National Parks are restricted air space. The airspace above provincial parks is not restricted, however many parks do post information saying that drones are not allowed e.g. Algonquin Park. Provincial park legislation does not cover drones specifically but it does refer to aircraft. These northern wilderness class parks like Wabakimi have provisions for aircraft.

    Thanks for the great travelogue. I was wondering how you found the Q16 in windy conditions. I just got one, too (red is best!) and I find soloing a challenge in any kind of wind unless I kneel in the middle. Two people in the boat and it behaves very well.

    • @KevinOutdoors
      @KevinOutdoors  4 роки тому

      Good question Mark. The boat certainly is a bit of a challenge in the wind solo. I took it out for the day with a buddy before this trip and he filmed me a bit. Paddling empty, the bow was sitting very high in the water when I was sitting on the bow seat and paddling backwards. I can't kneel for very long as I lose circulation quickly and get cramps so I really rely on sitting on the bow seat. But the boat handled very well when it was loaded, I did pack the boat with all the weight as forward as it would go. At one point in the video I go out for the day and I show how I packed most of my spare gear back into the boat again with the weight forward. I a gusty situation I'll move forward to the thwart and kneel for awhile until I get control back.

Even though I paddle the Q16 backward (with my weight closer to the centre) and load my gear forward I still have issues with control in the wind. These kevlar boats are very light and they sit so high in the water they can easily get blown around. I bought a third seat and will be bolting it in for this season closer to the centre of the boat for added control when solo - I'll take it out when tandem. The Q17 is not for solo use. I hope this helps.

    Really enjoyed this. I am in the early stages of planning a trip to Wabakimi next year using either this entry or Fitchie Lake off of 599. Really nice to see some first hand info as its hard to come by. I'm sure you know this already but check out friends of Wabakimi for some great maps.

      Thanks Dan, yes I have some of their maps. Was going to do the entire Kopka this spring until the trip got cancelled due to covid and I have those maps but I kinda put this together at the last minute. Just FYI I found a 4-wheeler trail that enters Smye Lake right at that beaver dam. It must hook in with the 702 further north. It would allow you to skip the beaver meadow walk but it would have to take a very long way around - likely over 1-2km. I didn't search for the other end but you could probably find it on google earth. Good luck with your trip. Edit: - ha, I took a look at google Earth. There is an almost identical road/parking lot just north of where I started. I suspect the trail starts there. It wasn't hard walking across the beaver meadow but if I was to go again I would try the other parking area and look for the trail. It looks to be about the same length. Good luck!

You can imagine after driving 5 hours and finding a well established parking area I thought I was in the right place. 200-300m north there is another similar spot. A bit embarrassing but that's how it goes. When you find the spur with a fire pit and parking area you don't assume there is another one very close by. :)

    Kevin - Smye is definitely a rarely used entry. Not like Little Caribou over by Armstrong. I entered at Smye in 2015 and 2016. A few other folks with whom I have communicated have used the entry point over the last 5-6 years. HINT: You missed the easy put in and bigger parking area. The track is just a few feet from the point where you pulled your truck in. Thanks, for mentioning the other access. A bit crazy that there are two parking areas in the same remote location. The one I stayed at looked very well made with heavy equipment. I don't know for sure but it just looks like the parks folks made a deal with the logging company 20-ish years ago when there was active logging right there. "When you have your bulldozer there, can you make a parking lot?". I would love to know the history of why there are two right there. When I found the first one I figured that had to be it. 😀

    Oh c'mon. Two rudimentary maps? The Wabakimi Project went through there ten years ago, located the lost portages, cleared them, measured them and mapped them for you. If anyone else is heading to Wabakimi or anywhere in the 6 million acres from Hwy 599 north to the Albany River, east to the Opichuan and south to the Kopka, and Lake Nipigon, the massive area referred to as the Wabakimi Area look up The Friends of Wabakimi. There is no need to bushwack and struggle through swamps.

      Good question, I don't think there is portage rating system. I would say these were difficult. Just because only once was there a real trail to follow. The rest of the time I had to figure something out. Although the portages were short there was a lot of rock scrambling to do. Sometimes you would rather have a longer portage if it meant an easier trail.

      Kevin Outdoors Yeah, I don't know much about posting vids, but I know you have limited control over adds. There were 10 in this video, for me anyway. That's a heck of a lot for a video under 50 min. I know they're short, but they really break it up. You know, you go from a relaxing paddle or forest scene, to suddenly jumping to some car add, or something.
      Anyway, thanks for posting. I enjoyed it anyway. I'm not able to get out, and haven't been able to for years now, so these videos like yours, and John's of course, are so soothing. They also keep me going in my goal to be able to get back out there one day.
