US mid-air collision: Officials expect no survivors, more than 40 bodies recovered

- China has urged the US to expedite its probe into what caused Wednesday's mid-air collision of two aircraft near Washington DC. US officials said they expect no survivors in one of the country's deadliest air disasters in decades. Two Chinese citizens were on board American Eagle flight 5342 when it collided with a military helicopter near Reagan National Airport. According to reports, more than 40 bodies have been recovered. Mitch McCann reports from New York.

The helicopter requested visual separation but initially identified the wrong plane, possibly focusing on one behind or a recently departed aircraft. When the tower received a TCAS warning, it alerted the helicopter about the approaching plane. However, the helicopter reaffirmed its request for visual separation while still fixated on the wrong aircraft, as the incident plane remained miles away. As the incident plane drew closer, the tower reconfirmed the situation. When the tower provided another heads-up, the helicopter responded and once again reaffirmed its visual separation. Despite these communications, the collision occurred.
