superb video. incredible how many names are still gracing the ovals today. Richard Beere, Brett Ellacott, Colin White to name a few. Never seen the chalky white fire - that was shocking to watch but the marshalls were outstanding.
that last crash seen one in same formula knocked the driver out it took some of the crowd to jump the fence and drag the driver out when it set on fire ! marshall was just stood there didn,t know what to do !!!
I remember the chalky white fire like it was yesterday. he was in the car was while it was on fire for 28 seconds another 10 seconds and he would have died. he wasnt wearing race gloves so the skin was coming off his hands and the zip on his race suit was melted so had to be cut off him, he was in hospital for a very long time and it was my father who had a few laps before retired from the race that puled him from the car ( will lindsay 233 ). john fortune did get a life ban and was reduced to ten years for deliberate fencing and the fire but he wasnt to blame for the fire that was due to no fuel cap on the tank they recon it was like a radiator cap just a half turn to remove it and he lost it the lap before the fire in a tangle with another car.
I gather you on about the last video of the two hot stocks? Of course not being there and looking at the video a person would think it was just a tangle of wheels, what they class as deliberate fencing? im just curious
I remember this like it was yesterday too. Didn't your Dad receive some nasty burns pulling Chalky from the fire? John blamed a jammed throttle, but we all know he was very short tempered. Wouldn't be the first time I'd seen him "pay back" with interest.
they are brisca f2 cars and there is a lot more to this incident than just a tangle of wheels as you put it. if you can find the race in question you will see one of the cars involved tangles with another a lap or two before the big incident, that is when it was speculated at the time the car lost its cap on the fuel tank. if you also look at the way the two cars come in to the corner with the car that ended upside down and on fire had been half spun and entered the corner being pushed sideways with car car doing the pushing up on the side rails of the other car. Add to that the scottish versus english rivaly which was in this case took things way to far and was out of control the sport then made a lot of changes to both car construction and the rules in which we race under to avoid any more incidents like this in the future which seems to have done there job.
I remember goin to the stock cars in Northern Ireland, some lethal crashes thankfully none went on fire like in this video. Miss those days as we have very few tracks over here now
Yee, my daddy at 1:33/4. All these new safety regulations have ruined the amazing motorsport which was banger racing. Things should go back to the way they were! x
No they haven't, they have made it safer! Yes new rules come in every season, but our drivers survive! It's still an amazing sport to race in, and still as enjoyable to watch.
Yes chalky white had burns to his hands. They didnt use screw on fuel caps then and fuel tank was underneath the exhaust. John got a life ban which was later reduced.
he had slightly more than burns to his hands when you see him stand beside the car after getting pulled out that was before the shock kicked in, it actually took years to recover from this and that night was the last night he ever raced again. i know the family quite well it was my father that pulled chalky out of his car and we have kept in touch ever since. yes john fortune did get a life ban and yes it was reduced on the grounds the car going on fire was no fault of john's. i think it was reduced to 5 years and i seem to remember something about a behavior bond being paid as well but cant confirm that i was only 12 years old at the time it happened.
4:05 I've never seen a crowd be less phased by a man in a burning car
That last crash!! Very lucky man indeed full credit to them marshalls for saving his life.
Scary stuff. That last one was spooky. Glad he got out. The guys did a great job.

Didn't these cars have breakes O_o
They crash on purpose....
Like it but why caution a race when a car lands back on it's wheels or is inverted off the track? Get on with it!!!
Safety if they didn't the health and safety department would have a field day.
