The Scarlet Pimpernel is, sink me, one of if not the best period drama ever produced for television! All involved should be rightfully proud. Its production values are fantastic, the acting superb across the board, the story a captivating one, too! It has a comedic side, which thankfully is never overdone, well-crafted dialogue, adventure, political intrigue, a historical backdrop of immense significance, an excellent score and to cap it all off, a riveting end with a typically unpredictable twist which segues nicely into a wonderfully choreographed swashbuckling sword fight between our hero and his nemesis. I cannot find a single thing wrong with this and perhaps the icing on the cake is the exquisite Jane Seymour, she gives a performance of subtle depth which goes hand in glove with Anthony Andrews’ depiction of Sir Percy Blakeney which he handles with no small degree of aplomb. Three cheers for the Scarlet Pimpernel!!! Hip-hip-hooray! Hip-hip-hooray!! Hip-hip-hooray!!!

This film has some of the best swordplay I’ve ever seen- like nothing feels forced, it’s palpably dangerous, and they’re going at it still completely in character! The lack of music helps emphasize the very real sound of steel on steel, and I never get the sense that this is rehearsed! Brilliant!!
This with that final duel in The Mark of Zorro 1940. Well, Tyrone Power and Basil Rathbone were after all both elite fencers to begin with - wich made that incredible daring fencing scene one of the most trustworthy in the history of cinema.

Sir Perceville mocked Chauvelin over his dress, which the French are so proud of, then he insulted him even further by literally undressing him during dueling, which the French are also proud of. This is the essence of giving someone a "dressing down." Brilliant!
Very cool. However, imagine if the likes of Bill Gates and modern aristocracy were there, including those from Pfizer, Moderna, et al, waiting for Madame Guillotine? Should think that jolly Pimpernel was a naughty fellow who should be stopped.
Antony Andrews is a very likeable actor. No performance of his comes close to that of Sebastian in _Brideshead Revisted,_ though. But perhaps that is as much a reflection of the writing and direction.
Excellent Movie!! Wonderful Script, excellent acting, great action, and no sex, no gratuitous violence and no filthy language! An all around decent film. I just love his expressions and received pronunciation, and his phrases are so deeply ingrained into the audience! As for Jane Seymour, I have been a fan since 1980! She never ceases to entertain. She also does and excellent memorable role as Marguerite St. Just showing that women can be gallant too! Delightful!

Utterly FABULOUS. What a pairing, Anthony Andrews and Jane Seymour. They are so well matched. Great story, so entertaining, wonderful cast. Thanks so much for posting this!
Jane Seymore hated working with this guy in both the Pipernel and Edward and Wallace !! And i can see why!! Put this guy on a second best shakespeare stage and leave him there! Thats good enough
Most heartbreaking moment: The reception scene when Percy believes Marguerite is a killer. Favorite scene: When Marguerite comes to visit Percy in prison.
That one case of love at first sight, but this time it actually feels right because they do get to know each other and it's magical! And the lighting on Merguerite in that scene was breathtaking.

Enchanting and riveting from the first minute to the last! Not a single detail out of place.
Most heartbreaking moment: The reception scene when Percy believes Marguerite is a killer.
Favorite scene: When Marguerite comes to visit Percy in prison.
A favorite of mine is when Marguerite finally realizes who Sir Percy is.
@@gomomma6649 same.
Those moments around 21:56 where he drops the over-the-topness of Sir Percy Blakney Baronet and just becomes Percy when talking to Marguerite melt me.
That one case of love at first sight, but this time it actually feels right because they do get to know each other and it's magical! And the lighting on Merguerite in that scene was breathtaking.
I've remembered that change to him being himself all my life. There was a gap of about 40 years since I first saw this film and re-found it again here. ❤️
Such an enjoyable movie, and I imagine Anthony Andrews had much fun playing the different characters of the Scarlet Pimpernel. Thank you, Toan Le, for uploading this.
I love old movies and this was a throwback to some great swashbuckers!
The hurt in his face whenever he finds out his friends are sent to the guillotine. That's brilliant acting!
Wow that was stupendous. Loved the sword fighting scene when he cut off the buttons, very cleverly done. My goodness though, Anthony Andrews is soooooooo like Dirk Bogarde, amazing. Certainly an action movie, never a dull moment, loved it.
many thanks for posting this great movie....hadn't seen it in many yrs..,.great acting....very intertwining.....Richard Grant also a good rendition
Ian McKlellen was so young! It's hard to recognize beloved Gandolf. And Julian Fellowes went on to Downton Abbey.
At the beginning I didn't like his affected manners, at the end I do love him. What a man! Sir Percival 😘
One of the best made for TV movies ever.
me too I really like this movie
nice period costume movie
All I needed was to sit with my dad watching Ivanhoe and say "hey thats Anthony Andrews" now I'm here, happy out, tucked up on a sunday night watching The Scarlet Pimpernel for the umteenth time 😂 lost count how many times ive watched it over the last 20 years, just never gets old 😊
mr andrews gives a wonderful brilliant performance, fun to watch
Am an Indian but like watching British classic movies.specially Catherine cookson movies. Donno why feel I was born in 17th or 18th century 😄.

This movie has become one of my favorites...I never tire of watching over and over again, so here I am again after a year.👌
I remember my mom watching this on TV. It sounded great, so I watched it when i was in my 20s. I need to see it again. Fantastic story!
I had to get the book after I saw this movie when it first came out. I just have always loved this movie, and Anthony Andrews for all these many years! It was my escape when my babies were asleep in bed at night! Even if for just a few moments. I finally wore my book out. My images while reading the book (over and over) were the memories of the movie. So happy to now see it again. They same delightful feelings came back when I see it again. Thank you Anthony Andrews and all of the other actors and producers, writers, you broadened my horizons, and gave me respite from my everyday toil and trials!
I loved that book I must have read it fifty times. But none of the sequels were very good.
maggie smith if I had a quiz on the book and I watched the movie would I be ok?
What a great movie! I love this version of the Scarlet Pimpernel. I've watched it over 5 times.
When movies were still movies! Thanks so much for posting! Great movie! Good quality too!
Best film of Anthony Andrews - thank you for posting!
Still great after all these years! Anthony Andrews is the best of the best. Thanks for the post of this movie!
I can't believe I've never heard of or seen this, what a great movie, so glad I watched it!!! And I love Anthony Andrews acting, his posh funny accent in the movie was just captivating!!!
Sink me! I never watched it either till late 2024. I love it!
If only the dauphin truly could have been saved this way. Poor, poor little boy.
I've seen it in TV series long ago, and it is the kind of moovies to be seen again and again and again......
My nana would watch this movie every night she went to bed, she had one of the disks that plays the movie automatically so the movie would run on repeat all night. I would fall asleep about halfway through and wake up around where I fell asleep on it's 3rd or 4th play in the morning. My nana and I always finished it before getting up for the day. This brings back so many memories and I'm glad I can see it again.
Ian McKellen was superb and the ponytail suited him
This version is so awesome and thoroughly entertaining in all aspects! Anthony Andrews was superbly versatile and YES...sexy as Scarlet Pimpernel! Thank you so much for the upload!
Saw it as a young boy. Just watched again, and enjoyed it again.
This is an absolute guilty pleasure. Completely over the top. A romance novel come to life.
Absolutely true!
I was in love with all the characters and intrigue of this creation many many years ago and I must say that remains unchanged...
absolutely adore it now that I'm getting to a ripe old age -- doesn't the scarlet pimpernel hide his identity so well by playing a fop to perfection, hehe so funny 🤣🏵 cheers to everyone
Who is watching in 2024?
I am.
Hell yeah!
Moi
Yeah!
Me!!
Saw this movie in the 80's, great performances!
They seek him here, they seek him there
Those women seek him everywhere
That's Anthony Andrews can't you tell
Playing the dashing Pimpernel!
Superb you can be a soothing poet
Brilliant!
"Sink me" another poet!😉👍
Caitlin Cunningham Odds fish my dear! One is quite enough!
One of the most endearing movies ever. !!!!!!
Nobody does it better. Anthony Andrews IS The Scarlet Pimpernel.
then you have not seen Leslie Howard in the 1934 version; a fantastic cast, beautifully performed.
I prefer Richard E. Grant.
Definitely. Whenever I read the book I visualize Anthony Andrews as Percy. Fantastic casting all around. Love this movie.
Sink meh, if you are not right, my dear chap!
@@epic5945 I couldn't compare him to Anthony Andrews I'm afraid
Was a big fan of this novel during my school days... Sir Percy Blackeney . The character was my favourite!
I like this version the most.I saw this around 1991,on PBS if I remember correctly.
This is one of the best movies of all time. It is an excellent period piece, the acting is phenomenal, costumes outstanding, and the scene design and cinematography is riveting. Excellent job on this work of art!
Also, the lighting is magnificent.
I almost passed this one up, thinking it was all cheese. So glad I didn't. What a great movie. I haven't finished it, but I believe it will become one of my favourites. I love Percy and will look his name up to see more movies that he is in. So handsome and such a great actor:)
Although those with dairy allergies may best urged to refrain from viewing. :)
I hope you got to see Anthony Andrews as Ivanhoe. The movie has a few issues but the cast is excellent, and especially Anthony as the brave and noble hero of it! :D
@@Roguefem76 And a young Sam Neill as Sir Brian de Bois-Guilbert.
My older sister first got this book when she was about 13 and she told me I had to read it so I did. It's incredible. I'll always prefer the book but I love the movie so much too
Thank you for posting this!! I remember checking this out all the time when I was kid because I wanted to learn all about the French Revolution!! It was because of the movie that I fell in love with French history and I learned the phrase "Long Live the Republic!!!" 🇫🇷 🇫🇷
Super ! It helped me forget my passed away family on this Sinhala New years day.It was super in every way.
I've read the book twice, listened to the audiobook once, listened to the broadway soundtrack countless times, and now I'm finally watching this movie!
I have always loved this movie. So glad you posted it. Anthony Andrews is so wonderful in this role and sexy too
Our teacher showed us this movie in 5th class - when we were about 10/11. I never forgot it. Gave me part of my love of history and seeing all sides may have a different view.
"'Twould seem your friend is in distress... To the rescue!"
LOL! Aw I love that part of the film when he says that - and then chucks the guy in the water! haha! Always makes me laugh, it's so hilarious!
@@puddylump41 It was the delivery that made it so good. LOL
"Your's I believe" is something I say on a daily basis
I am watching this in 2022. The fortieth anniversary year.
I love this movie! Cant stop watching it again and again! Thank you for sharing it!
"They seek him here,
they seek him there,
those Frenchies seek him everywhere.
Is he in heaven,
is he in hell?
That damned elusive Pimpernel.
"Sink Me, the lady's a poet" 🤣
Or, as Blackadder said it:
*Baldrick* : They seek him here,
they seek him there,
those frenchies seek him everywhere,
is he in heaven
or is he in hell...
*Blackadder* :... And what's that revolting garlic smell?
Sink meh!!! This was wonderful! It has now become the newest addition to my favorite novels and movie adaptations. Had I known of it prior to my Victorian Adventure Fiction class, I would have seeked it here, seeked it there, would have seek it everywhere! Whether in heaven, whether in hell, until I found that damn, elusive Pimpernel.
Sink meh! The lady is a poet!
Cannot help myself....watching this gorgeous movie again.... Pure bliss
I can't stop watching this video. I love Anthony Andrews
The era of Revolution in France (1789-1794) during Robespierre was so bizarre! Citizen this and Citizen that. Beheading every fool who looked at you the wrong way. That little boy was adorable who played the Dauphin. Strange times indeed.
I yearn to be looked at the way that Percy looks at Marguerite
😻
You are, you're just not always looking when they do, much like Marguerite.
