- The first Breeders’ Cup ever held in Florida featured the greatest rivalry of the 1980’s when Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner Sunday Silence from California met Belmont Stakes winner Easy Goer from New York in the Classic for the Horse of the Year title.

Is it just me or was the coverage of the earlier Breeders Cup races so much more interesting with the knowledgeable commentators?
Pat Day/ easy goer very slow out the gate and found himself pretty far back around the clubhouse turn but, he caught up to sunday silence and then for some reason, who knows why let up
on the gas and that cost them the race..

Pat Day left a lot of horse on the Track in the 1989 Classic...Should have been a comfortable Win for Easy Goer but Pat Day gave him a VERY Timid careless ride and lost by a Neck as the Heavy 1-2 Favorite

There were a lot of theories about Easy Goer losing. He wasn’t great in turns , especially tighter ones, the shorter stretch at Gulfstream compared to Belmont or Saratoga and shortening from 12f-10f was another. I thought that Sunday Silence was pretty much a lock on a track like a Gulfstream.

Pat Patsy Daisy Day (aka Pat Ron Franklin Esque Day, Pat Wait All Day, Pat Start Stop Start Stop Start Day, Pat a Day late, Pat Delay Day, Pat so passive & patient he could watch a faucet drip for days Day) & his awful rides cost so many horses, including Easy Goer, Forty Niner, Seeking the Gold, Turkoman, Java Gold, Sky Classic, Heavenly Prize, Surfside, Menifee, Timber Country, Rampage, etc. As usual, while riding all of these horses Pat Patsy Daisy Day did his very very best to lose. Day's riding was horrendous - start stop start stop start, start check in major traffic start, inside outside way outside as wide as can be, back inside back outside back way outside as wide as can be, back in as tight as can be on the dead rail, turn his head in turn his head out, pull the trigger then fold up & put out the fire of a splendid Hall of Fame Champion in full flame, etc. A lemming could have rode better than Day. Pat Day rode Easy Goer like a teenager at the wheels of a Ferrari. Pat Day was the worst rider of all time, hands down. Pat Day NEVER won even ONE riding title against the best competition in New York, California or Florida (winters); & Day rode many full meets in NY (mainly Saratoga, but Belmont as well) & FL (winters at Gulfstream). I will take Pat Valenzuela & Chris McCarron over Pat Day any day, everyday. Over & over & over again Pat Valenzuela - on inferior horses SS, Fraise (1992 Breeders Cup Turf), Opening Verse (1991 Breeders Cup Mile) - significantly outrode Pat Day on superior horses Easy Goer, Sky Classic, Star of Cozzene. For that matter, I will take Cordero, Pincay, Bailey, McCarron, Stevens, etc., over Pat Day anyday, everyday. Cordero, Pincay, Bailey, McCarron, Stevens, etc., also over & over again significantly outrode Day. Day got so many superior horses beat - Easy Goer, Sky Classic (in 92 Arl Million & 92 BC Turf), Forty Niner (in 88 Ky Derby & Lexington), Turkoman (in 86 BC Classic), Java Gold (in 87 JC Gold Cup), Rampage (in 86 Ky Derby), Seeking the Gold (in 88 Haskell,Travers & BC Classic), Menifee (in 99 Ky Derby & Preakness), Heavenly Prize (in 94 BC Distaff & 95 Beldame), Surfside (in 99 BC Juv Fillies), Timber Country (95 Ky Derby, Santa Anita Derby, etc), etc., & an endless amount of others. "Day is so patient he could watch a faucet drip for days. Day drove many a captain of industry, hard-boot trainer & horseplayer to the brink of rage." I will also take Woody Stephens, Allen Jerkens & Charlie Whittingham over McGaughey any day, every day. Woody Stephens' Swale over Shug's Pine Circle & Vanlandingham; Woody Stephens' Forty Niner over Shug/P Day's Seeking the Gold; Woody Stephens' Danzig Connection over Shug's Personal Flag; Allen Jerkens Sky Beauty over Shug/P Day's Dispute, etc.
Had Easy Goer been ridden & trained by someone other than Pat Day & McGaughey, Easy Goer would have been undefeated. Despite the very slight edge in the head to head record by the slimmest of margins, numerous times in their races, Easy Goer did not just pass Sunday Silence, he absolutely flew by Sunday Silence - Easy Goer's top speed was far faster than SS, & EG also had far superior stamina than SS; Easy Goer displayed far superior speed & stamina than SS. Had ss been forced to run drug-free without any drugs, Easy Goer would have been undefeated against ss, because "Easy Goer did NOT require ANY drugs to perform at his best, & the INFERIOR DRUG-RELIANT ss needed ped drugs. Sunday Silence was TREATED WITH DRUGS, NOTABLY THE PERFORMANCE-ENHANCING DRUG FUROSEMIDE, in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness & Breeders' Cup Classic when narrowly edging Easy Goer, but couldn't for the Belmont Stakes in New York, the one state where all drugs are banned. Easy Goer was free from all of the controversies about drugs, for ALL DRUGS are prohibited in New York, as they are in the rest of the racing world outside the US. The key questions that influenced racing all year was: Could Sunday Silence beat Easy Goer without drugs? Could Sunday Silence win without drugs? He gave definitive & assertive replies to the questions: NO. Sunday Silence struggled home edging Le Voyageur but was thoroughly beaten, as the splendid Easy Goer sprinted off with the Belmont Stakes. Racing should be filled with SUPERIOR horses like EASY GOER, who did NOT require ANY drugs to perform at his best, & NOT INFERIOR DRUG-RELIANT horses like SUNDAY SILENCE, so we focus our attention on the sport instead of drugs. It is to New York's merit & acclaim that their major races stand as giant hurdles to drug-reliant horses. Winning major races on drugs is not what racing is about." LA Times Dec 89. Furosemide/Lasix is a potent performance enhancing drug which masks & flushes other banned drugs, plus it reduces body weight by 16 to 25lbs & many studies show it gives a significant 9 length performance enhancement.
