The story of Mauthausen Concentration Camp | a horrific past - Dutch Audio

The Mauthausen concentration camp was set up in August 1938, five months after the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany, with the aim of creating a men's camp in the Austrian area and having prison capacity for the planned war. The area around Mauthausen was also particularly suitable because of the presence of granite, so that the prisoners could be employed in the local quarry. As with most Nazi concentration camps, the living and working conditions for the - especially political - prisoners were very poor. Furthermore, abuse, punishment, disease and hunger determined the image of everyday life. Prisoners were beaten to death, hanged, or shot. There was a staircase of 186 steps to the depths of the granite quarry, where many people lost their lives. Sick prisoners were frozen, starved, or killed with phenol injections or poison gas. Well-known executioners included 'das blond Fräulein' and 'Hans the killer'.
Mauthausen had a gas chamber in a basement room diagonally below the camp brothel. In the same room were two incinerators, also called crematoria, from Topf und Söhne, with which the murdered prisoners were burned. Before the bodies of the prisoners were burned, a doctor removed valuable prosthetics such as gold teeth on the examination table, close to the gas chambers and ovens.
