Also, Stefan has such a good heart. I think he just genuinely really cared about her. I think he treated her the way he wished he had been treated when he first turned. Maybe at that point in time, he thought that he would have stopped him from being a ripper.
Bree Smith in a deleted scene in season 6, Stefan tells Damon about Caroline’s feelings for him. Damon made a really good point in saying that ever since Stefan has known Elena, he’s has these blinders on in the shape of Elena Gilbert and he needed to take them off. I think once Stefan realized Elena loved Damon, he was okay with it because it brought him his brother back. Stefan didn’t really realize he loved her until she told him she hated him, and he couldn’t deal with the fact that she wasn’t going to be in his life anymore

As much as I love Stefan and Caroline, I did love the ending of TVD because 1) Stefan was already human and he found peace in death with his best friend. 2) Caroline was a mom who loved her children and she would never have been able to raise them if Stefan had lived, 3) Damon would be dead and Stefan being the person he was would’ve never been able to forgive himself for allowing that to happen.
