That Montreal run was something else. He beat many quality opponents. Also, if he didn’t beat Federer in that semifinal, Federer would have ended up year-end #1 instead of Roddick. That match turned out to be pretty much a hall of fame-clinching win, although he didn’t know it at the time of course.
A very accomplished cut-up of highlights. I particularly enjoyed the inclusions of the handshakes and some of the lighter moments between the points.... This was a fabulous trip down memory lane. Best Roddick imo. Incredible serve, FH and speed. He also saved a mp against Nalbandian in the US Open SF, who i think had his left wrist injured and issues in his abds.
His non-pushy forehands are a huge contrast compared to what would come later. Like even in this highlight reel he's not necessarily ripping *everything* off that side ala Blake but his standard rally balls had a lot more zip and penetration while still having a solid margin for error, and when he chose to flatten it out... well, we all know.
Probably the best of Roddick when he was hitting his forehand the best and most committed (barring that last wimbledon run where he had roger so so close).
Andy Roddick is probably the most tragic tennis player of all time bc he had to compete against the big 4 (especially Rafa and Roger, so many losses suffering against Roger). As a Roddick fan, 2009 Wimbledon Final loss was absolutely gut wrenching. I legit wept when he lost. The fact that he won just one major doesn't tell the whole story. He reached world no.1, won 32 career titles, 5 ATP 1000 masters titles, and 4 major finals (all losing to Roger). In terms of records, he's on par with Dominic Thiem, or actually even better because Roddick was in top 10 for nine consecutive years (2002-2010). People underestimate Roddick calling him a "one-slam wonder" without any knowledge whatsoever. Had he had better backhand and net game, he would have had won more majors.
Medvedev 1-5 in slams is tragic too, given 2 were 5 setters to Rafa & 1 a 5 setter to Sinner, for which he was knackered after an epic 5 set win over Zverev in the semi. Only man to ever lose 2 slam finals from 2 sets up I believe.
@@waholoopesorry74It’s really not from a technical standpoint. I’m a Novak fan too. Honestly no reason to dislike Andy. They had their spat, talked it over and got on with things. Roddick is one of Novak’s biggest supporters now in terms of who the 🐐 actually is 👍🏻
I feel like Andy had more skill from the baseline than he gave himself credit for. He needed to hit out and hit big on the FH more and his BH was rock solid. THe net rushing and grindy defense later in his career was suicide
Andy Roddick should have hired Paul Annacone as his coach after the season. Paul could have helped him with more solid net plays and returns. He already had a great Serve like Sampras, what He lacked was just an effective attacking game.
I respectfully disagree. I think focusing on net plays and try to become "like Sampras" did more harm than good for Roddick. He just doesn't have it in him to play like that. He should have stuck to his powerful flat FH and serve and become an even more aggressive power baseliner, which is what worked for him in the first place.
