Took a class taught by this man. A class about melodrama in film. A very positive experience. He showed "Days of Heaven" and it left a indelible impact on me. Cheers Maddin!!
@@OtisF96 Do you know what the word "shibboleth" means? In this case the word "chaotic" is an example of _that_ word, where younger digital-native folks have given it an added contextual valence, describing unpredictable/unconventional/disorganized/provocative, but frequently endearing, personality traits and behaviours ✌
Dear Criterion, Please put me on the list for getting a bagful of free films. I would really appreciate it. My neighbors would appreciate it. And my cats may well indeed appreciate it. And it would make Arizona a culturally richer place. Thanks.
L'Avventura The Night Porter Simbiopsychtaxiplasm Mouchette - Bresson When a Woman Ascends the Stairs Wilhelm Reich - Mysteries of the Organism Robinson Caruso on Mars Mala Noche Housu Black Narcissus Days of Heaven The Thin Red Line Brand Upon the Brain
By insane coincidence, I saw Maddin's "Brand Upon the Brain!" and his Criterion pick "Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Part One" in the same day. Both I consider masterpieces.
He's made a ton of movies, and I've seen a ton of them. I have yet to be disappointed, and am usually blown away. They're all totally weird, visionary, and hilarious.
We may also get The Saddest Music In The World from the looks of these tags -- I know that was MGM at one point, with whom Criterion also has an ongoing relationship.
L'Avventura Il portiere di notte Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take One Mouchette Onna ga kaidan wo agaru toki W.R Mysteries of Organism Mala noche Hausu Black Narcissus Days of Heaven The thin Red line Robinson Crusoe on Mars Brand upon the brain
Could someone possibly write a list of the films GM selected ? Very curious to know..Unable to hear him well enough to decipher..His enthusiasm is infectious...!
L’Avventura The Night Porter Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Part One Mouchette When A Woman Ascends the Stairs WR: Mysteries of the Organism Robinson Crusoe on Mars Mala Noche House Black Narcissus Days of Heaven The Thin Red Line Brand Upon the Brain
After some advanced audio analysis, I think it must be Vigo's "L'Atalante," although it sounds like "Ladolante" (yet I admit I have never once heard a real person say the title of the film). Hopefully that's a none-too-subtle insider's hint that Criterion will be issuing said film soon.
List of titles in order: L’avventura The Night Porter Symbiopsychotaxiplasm Mouchette When A Woman Ascends The Stairs WR: Mysteries of the Organism Robinson Crusoe On Mars Mala Noche House Black Narcissus Days Of Heaven The Thin Red Line Brand Upon The Brain
He seems so awesome, I laugh every time he says bag, also can anyone tell me what film he's referring to that's his favourite film of all time along with days of heaven??? love his films
This looks like an interesting crowd of commentees. There are at least two books with Maddin interviews in them...right now I have the films of Guy Maddin by Caelum Vatnsdal in front of me. It gets Cocteau like in some passages...wonderful. I'd like to recommend some films. Mon Oncle, The Coca Cola Kid, and The Tenth Victim. (watch this with no titles and english selected....they spoke in english)
@Coolestmovies They certainly don't and we don't even know how long this has been going on off public record!!! LOL. I totally agree though. A random, regular Criterion invite would be wonderful! I would approach it with the utmost modesty and respect for any parameters presented before entering the room.
It still amazes me how you guys (Criterion) still haven't added Ingmar Bergman's "Persona" and Federico Fellini's "La Dolce Vita" (two of the greatest films ever made) to the list. BAG!!!
@jonathanyadirbq He speaks about "L'Avventura" earlier in the clip, but I'm referring to about 2/3 of the way through (minute 2:07) -- definitely not "L'Avventura" he's speaking about. Also, yeah, that beard is wild. He looks nothing like he usually does.
@ChristopherKnudsen My Winnipeg MUST be on the way -- it's distributed by IFC in the US, and I can't think of any other reason he would be wandering around in their offices.
@OhNoItsGojira A. I work in the industry and I know how much directors make from all sort of sales and licensing. No shit they don't have time to watch every movie - but when something is your FAVORITE film and you are in that industry and you don't own it.....that is pretty mind-blowing.
Oh man, if I was offered a chance to just come to Criterion's library and take random selections, I'd basically cancel the rest of my life to make that appointment.
I would love to just climb in that closet and pull the shelves down so the room fills up with movies and Id dive into the pile and swim around in them like a movie collecting Scrooge Mcduck.
damn if i had to pick 6 movies: Amarcord,The Complete Monterey Pop Festival Cronos,Crumb,The Darjeeling Limited, America Lost and Found: The BBS Story,Harold and Maude, House, and The killing lol 10 mins thats all i ask!!!
"Somehow Ive allowed the release of this thing to go by, and not grabbing it and putting it in my BAAAAAG!"

taking a copy of his own movie is such chaotic energy and I love it

Henceforth, whenever I'm pleased by a title I will bark "BAG!"
Dear Criterion, Please put me on the list for getting a bagful of free films. I would really appreciate it. My neighbors would appreciate it. And my cats may well indeed appreciate it. And it would make Arizona a culturally richer place. Thanks.
hahahahaha
Criterion, add me to the list too.
Thanks.
Achieve something in the film industry and you might get a shot, unlikely, but you might get a shot.
@@AndrewSnarls whoosh bro whoosh
@@hrishabh - I knew it was harsh when I wrote it, but it's not as though it's untrue.
L'Atalante is the other film he mentions for those wondering.
nobody has ever said the word BAG! like he does
baaaagggg
His love of film shines every time he says "bag!" Love it! :)
The Guy's hilarious, this just made me want to watch his movies, I have not seen any of them yet. BAAAAAAAAAAGGGG!!!
I think he picked more than six.

By far the best DVD picks Criterion has done.
Guy Maddin, you are a wonder. Keep making films.
Days of Heaven and L'Atalante are his favourite films? ...I now love him even more!!
Days of Heaven, good job! There's a man who knows what a good movie is. Terrence Malick is a genius.
0:46 - Guy Maddin is an honest guy.
He's such fun here. Bill Hader also picks House.
This was the most relatable one if all these videos.
This is my favorite installment of this series.
Guy Maddin...why you so cool?

More Maddin in the collection!!!
I think he put in the bag the movies he was leaving Criterion with. What we didn't see is him and a team backing a truck up to take everything else.
That would be the first ram raid committed with good intentions!
TRUCK!
My absolute favorite Criterion Closet video!
That is the way to do it
This is the most enjoyable Criterion closet video.
I want to work there soooo badly!
You go, Guy!! Love it.
"Take that, Leni Riefenstahl!" (I spell that right?)
+sclogse1 Thank you! I didn't know what the hell he said
I watched Hous recently with no subtitles and whilst incredibly stoned. It was fucking incredible.
We may also get The Saddest Music In The World from the looks of these tags -- I know that was MGM at one point, with whom Criterion also has an ongoing relationship.
I go grocery shopping like him. Putting things in my BAG!
Not many people go Malick in these DVD picks so when I see someone do so I get pretty excited
House! so awesome
I get so fuckin jealous when I see these videos.
Days of Heaven, Christian Bale's favorite film, and he worked with the director too!!

I'd be lying awake at night leading up to a Criterion closet visit too!
He seems so awesome, I laugh every time he says bag, also can anyone tell me what film he's referring to that's his favourite film of all time along with days of heaven??? love his films
L'Atalante (1934)
Naruse was his best pick. Or the Powell/Press. Guy Maddin is probably the best closet picker.
"Baag!" lol
Please Criterion I really want a Guy Maddin boxset!
This looks like an interesting crowd of commentees. There are at least two books with Maddin interviews in them...right now I have the films of Guy Maddin by Caelum Vatnsdal in front of me. It gets Cocteau like in some passages...wonderful.

Would love to see Ken Russell do one of these- but it's too late.
In this closet, being greedy is the only way to be.
I'd figured as much. Thanks for the corroboration!
@JCBlaise He absolutely is.
I never realized just how much bill hader looks like Stephan King

This guy probably already has a sizable dvd collection.
@ChristopherKnudsen I second that. There's quite a few IFC films I wish were on Criterion DVD, My Winnipeg being high on the list.
Man, if I had to choose: The Seventh Seal, House, Beauty and The Beast, Monsieur Hulot's Holiday, Alexander Nevsky, Le Samorai
someday ill get to do this...
It still amazes me how you guys (Criterion) still haven't added Ingmar Bergman's "Persona" and Federico Fellini's "La Dolce Vita" (two of the greatest films ever made) to the list. BAG!!!
best to ever come out of Canadian cinema. also check out Jean-Claude Lauzon and Philip Borsos. the other two best to come out of Canada.

We're gonna need a bigger bag.
wow he really filled his...BAG!...funny tho i am jealous.
That's it, I'm becoming a famous film-making so I can raid Criterion's closet.
In the BAGGG!
If I could have 6: Amarcord, Crumb, Royal Tenenbaums, Secret Honor, The Killing, Videodrome
I made a movie in the seventh grade that ran about 82 minutes, can I go to the room?
@prokoscho Pretty sure he's referring to "L'Atalante", by Jean Vigo.
@ChristopherKnudsen My Winnipeg MUST be on the way -- it's distributed by IFC in the US, and I can't think of any other reason he would be wandering around in their offices.
I want to see Branded Upon the Brain, is it good?
He has to double-dip on his first two grabs. I don't think the "bag" thing will work this time =D
