Whoa Nelley, 1988 and it used to be great. Swinson Chevrolet is now Jim Norton T-Town Chevrolet at 8130 E Skelly Dr. Tulsa, OK 74129. Skelly of course is an oil company that was based in/had roots in Tulsa, OK. SEM makes paint that works on those columns and you can easily match it to your color. I've used it before.
We got the VIN, we win: 1G1 for US made Chevrolet, BN51 for Caprice Classic four door sedan, H for 5.0L (305 CID) V8 with four barrel, aka RPO code "LG4", 9 is a check digit, J for the 1988 model year, R for Arlington, TX assembly and the rest is the production sequence. The Arlington, TX plant still operates today and produces SUVs. No, this is not a Brougham. If so, it would have a "BU" instead of a "BN" in the VIN. Yes, 1988 would be the last year for a 305 in a "B" body with carburetion, but the 307 Oldsmobile engine of course ran through 1990 and was always a four barrel. I saw the eclipse in Green Bay, WI as I was out of town on business last week. One of my coworkers had glasses and he passed it around so we could see it.
We got the SPID, glad you did: AG1 for driver's power seat, AG9 for six-way power seat adjustment, ARL for Arlington, TX assembly, AT6 for front passenger manual seat recliner, AU3 for power locks, AV7 for split front seat, A31 for power windows, A90 for power deck release, B34 and B35 for color keyed carpeted front and rear floor mats, B84 for body side molding ornamentation, CD4 for delay wiper system, C04 for padded vinyl top, C49 for rear window defogger, C60 for air conditioning, C95 for roof courtesy and dual reading lamps, GM8 for 2.56:1 rear axle ratio, J50 for vacuum power brakes, K34 for cruise control, K60 for 100 amp alternator, LG4 for 5.0L (305 CID) V8 with four barrel, Chevrolet produced (called corporate by then), MD8 for THM700R4 four speed automatic overdrive transmission, MX0 for automatic transmission merchandising option, NA5 for Federal emissions, N30 for deluxe steering wheel, N33 for tilt steering wheel, N91 for locking simulated wire wheel covers, PH2 is a rim code for a 15" rim, QCG is a tire code, TR9 for courtesy lamp group, UM6 for AM-FM stereo cassette with ETR and clock, UQ1 for stereo provisions, U26 for under hood light, U64 for four speaker system, U73 for fixed antenna, VK3 for front license plate bracket, V30 for front and rear bumper guards, V73 for US/Canada vehicle statement, 72Q for Garnet Red exterior moldings, 75U for Red exterior paint, (aka WA8980) 79T for Dark Carmine vinyl top, 82E for Medium Dark Gray cloth interior trim, 82I for Medium Dark Gray interior trim, 829 for Medium Dark Gray seat belts, DIS. LACQUER for Dispersion Lacquer paint technology, among other codes.
Whoa Nelley, the box used to rock. That's it, time to quit. Painted red and going to bed. 305 took a nosedive. B body looking a bit shoddy. In rust we do not trust. Going to be flat and that's that. We got the VIN and we win. You got the SPID, glad you did. Chevy looking kinda heavy. Please don't get squished because all of the "B" body faithful, many here, Benny for sure and yup, the Google Man are all going to be very, very, very, very pissed.

That's great info to know on the SEM paint, I was not aware until now. As always, a good read for the specifics of the car. I still miss my two 82's I owned, those were great cars !

@@ppeters480 Sure thing. Yup, SEM stands for "Sneckner Elliot Manufacturing" (named after the two founders of the company) and they are in Rock Hill, SC. Most auto body/paint supply houses have their products. If I remember right, you had a Code 44 Light Jadestone (a light Jade Green) colored 1982 Caprice (if I have the right person).

agreed, one of the most popular builds out here in West/Southwest now is taking these mid 70's to late 80's full size car frames and drive trains and putting post war (46-54) hot rod bodies on them and building a dirt cheap hot rod that you can daily drive and can do it QUICKLY because the frames and wheel bases are basically the same lengths . One of the guys in my car club put a 53 Chevy Fleetline on a 81 Buick Lesabre Frame and Drive train so there's VERY little modifying of the frame or body to fit together and after parting out what was left he spent less than $2500 on it and did it minus the paint job over a long weekend and literally drove it to work on Tuesday. The Caprice itself isn't really worth much monetarily wise but you take a few days to a week and slap a hot rod/ classic truck body make4s it worth some serious money compared to what you have in it.

Someone need to scoop that up, The HOT thing going on now out here in the West Southwest is putting the post war (46-54) bodies on the mid 70 - late 80 Full size car frames and using the 70's-80's drive train. . They are cheap to buy, cheap to build because the size of the cars and the wheelbases are basically the same so there's VERY little customizing you have to do to the bodies or the frames, plus by using the 70s or 80's your getting a better built engine, trans and rear end with better performance and the parts are still widely available plus performance parts are plentiful. There's a guy in my car club that put a 53 Chevy Fleetline body on a 81 Buick Lesabre Frame and not only did it over a 4 day weekend but spent less than $1000 building it after everything is saiud and done becuase you have all those parts left over that you didn't use in the swap that you can throw on Facebook Marketplace and sell.

Agreed, the HOT build out here in the Southwest/West now is taking these mid 70's- late 80's full size cars and yanking the body off the frame and slapping a post war (46-54) hot rod body on the frame and drive train. These cars, while GREAT cars, will never be worth much, even fully restored. But you go find a cheap post war body and slap it down on the updated frame and drive train and now your cooking with Crisco.......

Strange to think in today's gas price at $ 4.00 a gallon - it would cost $100.00 to fill that 25 gallon gas tank which could be burnt in about 10 hours doing heavy duty driving in city or highway traffic.

I love these boxes as well as the caddies but sadly whoever's drove that box didn't care about the car or didn't have money to fix her up by how tire up she was . Although I love the box chevys I'd probably only get a wagon version, there is a straight bodies 86 wagon for $500 on offerup but they never reply. Will probably end up like this car

@@googleusergp l wonder why they quit the 305 for the 307 Oldsmobile engine for those two years.
The 307 Oldsmobile engine l had in the 87 Chevrolet station wagon was a tough engine but lacking in power and the fuel economy was non existent.
The 305's l have had in various vehicles got better fuel mileage and most had more power than the Oldsmobile engine but as far a durability goes the Oldsmobile engine was almost indestructible.

@@garymckee63 Might have been production capacity. They may have had more 307 Oldsmobile V8s in inventory or they were cheaper to manufacture. My guess is that they wanted the smoothness of a 307 Oldsmobile engine or they were trying to "run out" the tooling and get every last ounce of value out of that tooling.
