Competence and egalitarianism are rare things in antagonists.
Shan Yu was probably the only named character in the film who never once cared about Fa Mulan's sex when her deeds spoke so much more loudly.

Stereotypical as they were, the Xiongnu branch of the Huns in this and the Muskogee Creek warriors in "Davy Crockett: King of the Wild Frontier" were the most badass of all Disney villains. How many Disney villains are based on real cultures known for being brutal warriors and willing to (implied, of course) slaughter women and children, torture their prisoners, or just all-around fight dirty?

Shan Yu's got some of the most killer lines of ANY Disney villain. They're so subtle that when you're a kid you don't fully grasp their meaning, like:
"How many men does it take to deliver a message?"
    "...ONE."
and "Besides, a little girl will be missing her doll. We should return it to her."

You can clearly hear the re-use of Goldsmith's Star Trek V themes here... and man are they great. Goldsmith was the PERFECT CHOICE to score this movie. Much like he did with The Secret of NIMH back in 1982, Goldsmith approached this film the way he would approach any live-action production, and the final product is absolutely breath-taking as a result.

I found that out myself when I was doing some research on the Huns for my book that I'm writing. You know, Disney should have given that backstory to Shan Yu as a man seeking revenge for past Chinese invasion on top of being a man from a warrior society because it would have made for a much more interesting villain. This gives a whole new perspective on Shan Yu seeing his backstory now.

I have read multiple complains about the movie being one-sided and the Huns being too demonized. I have a theory to explain this. I think the movie is displaying the point of view of the Chinese soldiers, and even more so Mulan’s, at every step of it. Think about it for a second.
Let’s look at the characters :
The emperor : wise, brave, authority at its perfection.
His advisor : arrogant and cowardly, downright ridiculous at times. No personality whatsoever. Just the way the soldiers see him.
Captain Shang : scary at first, then respectable, brave and likeable. The kind of development you’d expect when people train and rise together against a terrible enemy.
The same thing goes for the other soldiers, who first look like a bunch of a-holes until « Ping » learns to know, befriend and respect them. The enemy threatening them all have drawn them closer.
And speaking of the enemy : the Huns. Big. Strong. Dark. Small eyes, expressing nothing but wrath. They barely look human. In the battle in the mountains, the charge is made of a bunch of black dots all swarming in the same direction like a colony. They’re monsters more than human.
And their leader, the great Shan Yu. His voice tone is so freaking low. Everything he says is scary. Massive and brutal, even his falcon looks like it wants the world to burn.
My thought is that this is merely how the Chinese soldiers see the Huns, which is understandable. An unstoppable invader is threatening the whole empire, they have to be inhuman.
Things get more interesting by the end of the movie : when Mulan and her crew go to rescue the emperor. They use funny tricks to take down the guards, the scene is almost making the Huns look ridiculous. Fear strikes back along with the iconic theme when Shan Yu turns his wrath due to his failure towards Mulan. Yet however, by the end of the fight, Mulan’s theme is dominant, as she is in control of the situation. Even Shan Yu’s death is ridiculous : getting stuck because of his own sword, used by Mulan, before being rammed in by a giant rocket which draws him in a whole bunch more rockets which precipitate his end in a bunch of colorful explosions? Downright ridiculous.
And the reason to that is simple : it’s because the soldiers, but even more so Mulan is not afraid of him anymore.
After this, when she meets the emperor, he seems to be infuriated by her shenanigans, before thanking her for saving China, with a warm smile. She pushes her luck as far as to hug him, and he suddenly looks like a sweet grandfather. Just the way Mulan probably sees him.
This movie is one-sided because the perspective we’re following is one-sided.
The only characters which don’t seem affected by this are Mushu, Cricket and of course Mulan’s cow. But it makes sense since they are with her during the whole adventure, she knows them well enough not to be biased.
Sorry for the (late) thesis, I thought my theory might be interesting to share here.
