How lovely to see you with your daughter Liam, you must be so proud of her. Never to early to get them out watching wildlife! Great to see you plug the Big Butterfly Count. I did my count today as the sun was out, saw a few Large Whites, Meadow Browns, Gatekeepers and plenty of Ringlets (and a few Small Skippers, but they aren't on the checklist). Better than I feared, there have been so few butterflies about this year.

I’m in the North of England and so far this year we have had no butterflies. Our garden is usually full of them. I saw the first 2 yesterday. There has been a distinct lack of insects this year. One was a Comma, something I haven’t seen before so this video has been helpful.

How beautiful to be joined by your little one and talk about butterflies! You will have so much to chat to her about wildlife!
We once found our then 2 year old grandaughter I the garden, having thought she was quiet, sitting, quietly chatting to sparrows. They were all on the Nationwide, coming to bathe and drink from a tiny birdbath and just Potter about almost close enough for her to touch. A beautiful sight!

When I retired and moved to this house in a sheltered location I was amazed to see the numbers of Orange Tip butterflies ( and their white females) . I hadn't noticed them up at the farm I came from. Kind of surprised they weren't on this list but they are an early season species so maybe less seen by the survey time.
There were a decent number of Orange Tips in the spring here but since then I've hardly seen any of the normal Peacocks, Red Admirals and Tortoiseshells. I have grown three big budleas in my fairly wild garden just for them . The flowers have started opening in the past ten days so here's hoping.

Adult butterflies can survive the winter and this year I saw one on the wing in April albeit very tattered. It is not known exactly how the larvae overwinter but in some places in the south of England a brood emerges in early May and this year they produced a second in late June. I think they stay fairly local to where they breed and it is the migrants that we see in the garden on buddleia for instance but I have not seen any of these yet.

Oops.. 5:38 is a napi not a rapae.! Also the two at 5:59.! Pieris napi or Green vein Whites are not regarded as Cabbage Whites. The rapae is widespread including the US and Australasia and is called the Cabbage White in the former and White Butterfly in New Zealand thence Pieris should be used to mean White (cf Marbled White which is a Brown).

Ah, you are correct about the butterfly at 5:38, I didn't pay enough attention to that clip... why do you think the 2 at 5.59 are as well?
I have heard both of them referred to as cabbage whites in the UK, sometimes as small cabbage whites and large cabbage whites.

@@AShotOfWildlife Hiya you can clearly seen the venation on both of their underwings. Please go back to original comment for example non-UK but in the UK both the brassicae and rapae are collectively known as Cabbage Whites. The napi have a somewhat different larval foodplant as I understand it and are not destructive to commercial brassicas like the other two. There was an interesting clip on Springwatch 2023 (I think) explaining how a parasitic wasp mitigates the numbers of Large Whites (brassicae). The distribution of the rapae is fascinating.. not yet reached South Africa.. but in the USA for example they have managed to keep the brassicae out. Hope this helps, but it it is only going to get more involved when the Southern Small White, Pieris mannii, makes the hop across the Channel.!

Horrendous year so far for butterflies even on days with reasonable weather. Reasonable numbers of orange tips and holly blues earlier, but other than that v few. Worrying.

Definite decrease in butterflies year on year. The current climate does not help with the variable weather with large temperature changes over a few days quite frequently. Noticeable decline in white butterflies round my area.
Not far from me seen two colonies of several hundred (maybe more) Heath Fritillary so its not all gloom and doom.

Interestingly a lot of the species in this video have officially increased in numbers since the 1970s, although I do agree with the sentiment.

We have Cabbage Whites in the United States and Monarch Butterflies that are well known for the migration. It's remarkable that any insect as fragile as a butterfly is capable of migration. Welcome to Reva! She looked comfortable in her papoose carrier! God bless and safe travels!

What do you mean? If you're talking about the butterfly count thing, I have nothing to do with it and I'm pretty sure it's free to take part. I got my stats from last year's count (which is freely available online) and it just happens to be taking place again now. UA-cams T&Cs mean I a required to declare any paid promotions, there are none in this video.
