This!!!! It’s so sad because I didn’t begin to appreciate my Chinese heritage until college as well. Before that, I always pretended I was white because it just felt like the right thing to do at the time. My mom is white and I was born in Canada, but being mixed made it even harder for me to understand my roots.
@@NatalieHarrisonLim Honestly tho that is such a classic mixed people & overall minority experience. I faced the opposite scenario myself being mixed in Asia; I absolutely hated and resented my white side and couldn't understand why people were treating me differently, excluding me, and gatekeeping me from my heritage and culture. Meanwhile I had family members and relatives view me as "lesser" because I wasn't pure blooded like everyone else. As a young adult, I'm still learning to consciously unlearn all of this but it's so hard... glad to see I'm not alone in this though. I hardly saw any other mixed people or foreigners growing up so it felt even more isolating.
Hearing someone say furikake correctly is music to my ears, thank you. Also looks delicious. Glad we were able to accept and love your Japanese culture, it's so amazing.
Oh that looks so good 🥺 I love your channel. I just started noom to learn how to eat and develop a healthy relationship with food and my body (was raised to view food as a reward and something earned, and on the flip side something shameful) and your channel is really helping me continue to have a curious mindset about food and cooking.
So happy to have you here 🥰 a healthy relationship food is one of the most important relationships we have! Since Noom categorizes foods at green, yellow, and red, it has been shown to jeopardize some people's relationship with food. I encourage people to do whatever works best for them, but I just wanted to let you know in case you were starting to experience those thoughts ❤
@@NutritionByKylieTHIS RIGHT HERE. I'm trying out Noom right now, and NOBODY there seems to get how stupid that color coding is! Like, some of their core lessons are "Don't label food as good and bad!" Yet they're using colors that are VERY INGRAINED in society to mean "good, okay, bad"?? How backwards is that?! "All it means is that the orange foods are more calorie dense and you shouldn't eat as many! They're not bad! You can eat whatever you want!" Yeah okay, then how about you figure out a different way to "code" (aka label) food? Maybe a little "CD" for the calorie dense stuff, but in a neutral color that doesn't have meaning? I ignore the color coding, except for wanting to shake whoever decided it was a good idea.
It’s different when the audience is in front of you, there’s no editing, you see all the faces… it’s not better or worse but people can feel differently about them
I’m on a 6 food elimination diet for my EoE and have a ton of food allergies due to oral allergy syndrome so I can’t eat like 95% of the things you make, but I still find your content so soothing and relaxing. I get to vicariously enjoy new and varied foods through your cooking.
I'm so glad I discovered you! I'm from Wahiawa and you're the first nutritionist I've vibed with. I love your stance on adding rather than removing and I am a huge fan of everything you've been making. Keep up the good work 🤙🏽
I love seeing fellow hawaii locals successful and big on the internet!!! Also ur food tips r banging. No matter where in the world we are, food always manages to bring us home🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽
I really love your videos and they help me a lot! I grew up in a home where I was able to eat whatever I wanted when I wanted this caused me to develop some terrible unhealthy habits and I’ve had a bad relationship with food my whole life. I’m now a type 2 diabetic and I’m working on trying to have a better diet and make better choices and as someone who is lost when it comes to cooking channels like yours help so much! Thanks!
I love these facts! 1. I’m also from Boston, and I live in the South now, so, understood. 😆🙄 2. I have Japanese heritage and I would be so weirded out by how people reacted to my middle name, which was my grandmother’s name, and would get the crazy question “why are your eyes like this?” **stretches out their eyes***. 🙄🙄 But now I’m so proud of it and luckily don’t get so many reactions to it. ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you for sharing!! 🥰
aw i’m happy you made this video! I get a lot of inspiration from your shorts and it’s cool to know a little bit more fun facts about you :) congrats on the engagement!!
Thank you saying you once struggled with your Japanese heritage, I did too for a long time. And I’m also a Hawaii transplant. I love your video shorts! It makes healthy cooking & eating much easier. Mahalo nui loa
Omg can you make a video on how you deal with your IBS in the food field? I have IBS too and mine is very severe and it's hard sometimes to find food that doesn't upset my stomach 😭
I love your channel, I live in Rhode Island. Your recipes are actually easy to follow and not crazy expensive to replicate. Congratulations on your engagement. 🎉
You meals are amazing thank you and keep them coming …… and if you haven’t yet traveled to Japan to indulge more into your roots, you should go 😊…. Such an amazing country with phenomenal history
I was diagnosed with IBS at 14 and similarly to you, it's how I got into food and now I cook and bake constantly. I don't think that I'll become a dictation, but it's definitely a route that I've considered. For now, I'll just stick to handing out food and baked goods to family and friends though 😂😂
I can relate to the Japanese culture part 😅 It’s difficult being different from everyone else around you. People comment on too many things on which they are ignorant.
I don't think that's the reason for her. Japanese culture is very engrained in Hawaiian culture. Maybe that's why she struggled to be proud of it, because the lines between those two cultures are so blurred.
You are so cool! I also lived in Boston and recently moved to TX to be closer to my family because I'd missed a lot of time with them. It was a lot to move across the country. I love hearing your story. Thank you for sharing!! ❤️🫂❤️
That looks amazing making it tomorrow 😋 😍 🙌 it's like a poke bowl without the poke I'm addicted to poke but currently pregnant so can't have this is a great substitute
I'm so glad that she actually teaches things people can use in everyday life instead of a like a dietitian I once had that asked me whether an apple or a chocolate bar was a better snack
that looks so good!! since you mention IBS, how do you feel about it? as in, do you see it as a catch-all for anything gastroenterologists can’t explain? or do you think it’s a useful category?
i think it might depend on the person (although u can be diagnosed by it) i used to say i had IBS when i was dealing with gastric problems even tho it wasn’t ibs and just other things so ig in my case it is a catch-all!
I was diagnosed with an ibd at 23, so for me it's been seven years of living with Ulcerative Colitis. I'm so thankful for modern medicine being so amazing and I want to start eating healthier for my future family and myself so I'll just feel better in general
Love that you became interested in becoming a dietician after seeing one. Honestly, dieticians are an underrated part of medicine- I mean, a dietitian is who discovered my mom’s thyroid disease, when other doctors just assumed she was “temporarily” sick from post-partum, in reality her thyroid got fried from the pregnancy.
The world needs more of Japanese culture. Their level of discipline, very considerate and detail-oriented nature breeds a high quality of society in Japan. Let alone the people who obsess traveling there in their bucketlist and working hard to save up just to be able to visit the country multiple times. That says a lot about Japan as a whole.
I always struggle to eat normally and You really helped me to fix my relationship with food and i thank You for that from the bottom of my heart. (english is not my first language, but i think You understand what i mean) ❤
Okay but filming a video in the comfort of your home is something entirely different than SEEING the audience in real time, yknow? It absolutely makes sense you're comfortable with this theme! 😂❤
27? You look 37! But in a good way!... That or I look like a fetus, I am 27 but everyone thinks I am a tall 16 year old, I wish I looked more mature. You are so pretty

I agree! That looks so good!

haha I feel like every Asian kid doesn’t appreciate their culture until they’re in a new environment where they can embrace it like college
