- In the army now! British National service. A close look the British National service. Between 1947 and 1963 more than 2 million British men were called up to the armed forces, often serving in one of Britain’s many garrisons around the world. After attending a medical and joining up, all conscripts had six weeks of basic training during which they got used to military life. The experience many men had of being thrown into combat situations, such as in Korea, Malaya, Kenya, Cyprus and Suez, would never be forgotten. And 395 of these National Servicemen were killed on active service.

Three of my uncles served. One joined the Navy and sailed to war in Korea. One was a trained Medic. They all enjoyed it.
Interesting! Thank you for sharing!
Minimum training?
Wrong
These lads were posted to regular army professional units and would have had ongoing training and experience from serving alongside the regular troops.
They were not thrown ad hoc to war zones.
Russia does that.
We don’t.
Great video. Memories of Catterick with 66 Training Regt R.A.C. as illustrated. Service with The Bays. Wonderful time. Proud to have served
.
Seen it done it got the t-shirt went in 1963 demobed 1969 bloody hated it but looking back i wouldn't have missed for the world met some great mates
I know the feeling- when your in it you long to get out, afterwards the good stuff stays with you - and the rest well..
....not on National Service though.
That effectively ceased in 1960.
The documentary was excellent (of course!), and thankfully the introduction voice over was not a constant annoyance!
My father did his National Service between 1951-1953, posted to Hong Kong. He was a Ward Orderly in the RAMC. He died twelve years ago this month.
Thank you for sharing!
My dad was there too.
My father started his National Service in 1959, when his two years was up he signed on as a regular, unfortunately he ended up getting a medical discharge four years later.
I was disappointed that national service finished.
So I joined up. It was great
ME TOO
@@naguerea And me. Signed on in 1964 and enjoyed (almost) every minute of service.
Looks like Tidworth.
A pimple on the arsehole of the world.
I remember doing the same on Chieftain in the 80s.
Majority of these lads were off to Germany.
A better country than the Uk by far and enjoyed by most of us.
Many thanks for this video.......
Thank You!
When we spent money on defence instead of on the workshy
I was stationed at Normandy brks 1982 to 1985.
WOW you were late in doing National Service Colin, you should have been given a medal for being the last one called up .
fast forward to 2024 and well what do we have now.
I still believe if needed our younger generation will step up and be counted.
With the world the way it is now, perhaps it is time to revisit National Service.
It won't work!
I served from '79 until '89, even back then people were talking about bringing N.S. back, the attitude of the majority of those serving was that it was a bad idea, if you had to go into combat you wanted the people backing you up to be people who had volunteered to be there knowing the risks and not someone who wasn't given a choice.
I agree but the courts run the country now and everybody would be appealing etc for the slightest reason.
That sums up modern Britain.
Put to shame by the likes of Finland Sweden and the Baltics.
The army is good fun .
Well, that looks like two years of hell.
what cameradery we had, here I am 84 and still in contact with pals.
Yes times during basic training were very hard.During our first 16 weeks in the Army during 1952 , one poor chap could not go on,and sadly killed himself.
I am told the RAF was easier.
Good morning, friend ✌️🤙☕
Top of the morning to you, my dedicated viewer!
Didn’t teach you punctuation though …..
Six years national
Service are you sure national
Service was two years ended 1963
sorry, six years? in the begining I mention that basic training for all conscripts were 6 weeks..
National service was two years regular and four years territorial in total, at its height.
true
total propaganda.
Seen it done it got the t-shirt went in 1963 demobed 1969 bloody hated it but looking back i wouldn't have missed for the world met some great mates
