I do think that the stark difference in the response of Shi'a-majority countries to this genocide in comparison with Sunni-majority countries must cause many to revisit the ethical background to the emergence of a Shi'a-Sunni distinction within the Muslim ummah. For reverts converting to Islam, that is always a puzzling choice, especially when most local mosques and majorities are Sunni. So, we have the option of "just Muslim" and having to work out which hadith collection tradition to consider as authoritative. The ethical integrity displayed by Shi'a Muslims in their support of majority-Sunni Palestinians has, most definitely, elevated how Shi'a Muslims are perceived by those of us Muslim reverts in Western countries who feel so deeply for the pain and dispossesion of the Palestinians.
