  • It's been a while since the last installment of my "Ultimate" series! This one is from the vault! I shot it in 2021 and it was lost on a hard drive that corrupted. It took forever to get the data, and now I have a few older videos that I'll release over time. My goodness have I lost a bit of weight since I shot this LOL

Really like the wide opening on that kettle, and that the kettle is 1L capacity. This opens up a lot of possibilities.

About 50 years ago, I bought an MSR stove that looks like a Lunar Lander.
Three folding legs and the burner on top of the fuel reservoir. Later on, I found a Coleman (?) rectangular container for it. A smaller square bowl sliding over the top of the much deeper base.
Holds enough water to boil two MRE entrees and the water makes two large mugs for coffee all in one burn. Best set up I’ve ever seen and all by accident. Still have it, still works great.

Nice video. I have had the Kettleist set for a number of years. Two points about the video:
    1. A kettle does work much better than a pot for a pour over.
    2. That rock is the least stable thing I've ever seen you set a stove on. 😁

I’ve got a bunch of kettles but this one is by far my favorite. Wide mouth, a lid that stays on, pours well, and just the right size. I like it so much I’ve got two, one to get dirty on the campfire and twig stoves, and one for gas and alcohol. But since i tend to abuse my kettles, I do prefer the stainless version.

I have this kit and love it. It competes heavily with my Trangia 27 w/kettle setup. I did add a lixada flat folding twig stove that can use a trangia style burner and that fits under the kettle in the bag. Then a trangia burner (inside a ziplock) fits inside the bowl with matches and the spoon. When I am only using dehydrated foods, this kit wins hands down as a grab and go, along with a small 4oz bottle of alcohol.

I've a smaller kettle, 300ml, that works well for day hike. I can make an overcomplicated coffee and cook some instant noodles. Made a few bideos about it.
This one would be ok for longer trips.

The gsi kettle is pretty unique with its wide top, meaning you can more easily pack it with snow in winter or cool food in it if needed.

Like it. Especially if the 1L is practical, not max, capacity. Love anodized. More even heating than titanium lighter than stainless. Plastic rim cups don't burn lips. Wide mouth allows stews and easy cleanout.

    Great video paleo hacker MD
I have bought a few pieces of gear because what I seen in your videos!
My cook kits seem to consist of (car camping)( Park camping) (day hawks )
( dack packing) although all these things seem to have one thing in common none of the cook systems seem to be the same?? But I always seem to have items I always go to !
    Like my Kelly kettles 🎉
To me there's just something about building a fire when you're in the the woods
Kelly kettle gives you a contained fire pit and all you have to do is pick up twigs off the ground just put it in your Kelly kettle bass
and put a hobo stove on top and you're ready to cook.

Thanks for the review Doctor Ernie. I like kettles too, but only for boiling water. When younger I used to hunt a lot in the back country on at least three day trips. I could not afford freezedried food so would eat, ramin, bannock, mashed potatoes, and oat meal; would often eat out of the pot. The kettle would be hard to eat out of and harder to clean up. Great for boiling water though.

Nice kit. I've been using the MSR Alpine 2 pot kit with the nesting Alpine 1 liter teapot for years. My Trangia nests inside the teapot along with 2 Bics, a scrubby and a small bottle of bio soap. It is stainless steel so it weighs 983 grams ( 2lbs 3oz) but is very sturdy.

Cook kits are handy for those with an open mind like you sir. If you want a ready made kit, it’s tuff to beat the version you have shown. I have been doing this “trekking” thing for 48 years and I will learn something else later today and tomorrow. We just spent 3 days in deer camp and I fed 4 of us from a kit about twice the size of yours, we did have steaks, jalapeño poppers, green chili stew, traditional eggs, bacon, sausage with a few camp taters… mostly all made in my Firebox setup and Mesquite twigs on the ground. We had good food, good times and good coffee… thanks to my Stanley French Press.

Great video, enjoyed watching. I think the Soto Thermostack Cook Set Combo has greater versatility and offers space for a stove and spoon and a drawstring net for a gas canister. Weight is about the same, GSI 320g and Soto 313.5g (my measurement).

David, a few weeks ago I decided I wanted a GSI Glacier 1 person Mess Kit. I checked out the price online. I'm a pensioner on a small pension. R700 was too much for me and it being Christmas and all. About 2 days later I went into a dusty old second-hand junk shop and there in a dark corner in a dusty old box but still unopened and unused and brand spanking new was a GSI Glacier 1 person Mess Kit. R120. (A Rand is the South African currency and currently the Rand/Dollar rate of exchange is about 20:1.) When friends comment I said it was what Jesus gave me for Christmas!😅 I love this thing. I made a polystyrene 'haybox' for it and I cook my porridge in it. I LOVE my Kit!

I'll still take my Esbit 5-piece trekking cookset over this any day. Can boil water, use the lid as a mug for coffee, then make your food in the main pot. All stows inside itself, then just toss in a pour over filter if thats your preference, or some instant packets if you want those, and a spoon and you're all set.

Very interesting, thanks. I'm never likely to criticise GSI kit - I have a load of it including a kettle and the dish/cup item. I like the foon too - the new style more sturdy than the earlier model. If I were backpacking I think I would still prefer to use my Minimalist set including a GSI stove, either the free standing or the cylinder top. Though for my big tent on-site car camping, I do like a kettle - easier for filling flasks for a day out and about. I have found the dish/cup set sufficient for my freeze dried meals - and the dish fits happily in my Gram Counter Gear Thermo Pocket Insulated Food Pouch while it's rehydrating.

I built a kettle kit, but it is only for coffee since I am a terrible coffee junkie😂 but hey, so what. I put a micro Fibre cloth in the bottom and then my alcohol stove with a home made pot stand and ziplocks for coffee and sugar and carry a smart water bottle and my stainless cup, and since I make cowboy coffee. when I'm done , I just have to rinse and wipe the kettle down and put everything except the water bottle back inside and put it in my pack and roll on.

    👍👍👍 .. nice looking kit.
My opinion .. there is no thing such as the 'perfect kit'. Under specific conditions, there will always be some 'shortcomings'.
That said .. this is good as it gives one licence to continue going seeking for that 'perfection' 😁.
Am looking to your 'Bushcraft' version of 'Ultimation' 😊.
Thanks for sharing .. take care ..

I have the original stainless steel version and it is bombproof. I can squeeze a titanium mug, stove and fuel can inside. When making cowboy coffee, just add cold water and the grinds will sink to the bottom. It also fits vertically in a side pocket of a ULA backpack. Placing in a camp fire-no worries of tipping over. You can also use the lid as a small frying pan 😎

    Honest feedback...
I find I don't like utensils that assemble. Food gets in the tiny spaces and is challenging to clean. On the trail, that stinks. I had the GoBites fork/spoon (Duo?) thing and finally retired it to go back to a long handle Ti spoon.
I do appreciate the attempt by MSI to put into market a kettle kit with a good assortment of included items. While I appreciate the design and thought in the MSI set, I still think my current kettle kit is more robust (and lighter). I have an Uberleben Kessel 2.0 (Ti). It comes with a great waxed canvas case I still use (makes for good storage of stuffs on trail when cooking. I have a 450 ml Toaks cup with DIY cozy that nests in the kettle, and I nest my Trangia in the cup with a cut down scrub pad, Lightload pack towel, and mini Bic lighter. I also nest in the kettle (next to the cup) a one ounce squeeze bottle of alcohol, a small screw top tin with my tea bags (HiCaf Tea - Cinnamon Toast Black ... awesome tea ... 116mg of caffeine). I keep my Firebox Nano (also Ti) in my side pocket of my pack with a 4 oz bottle of alcohol (I only ever use half of it).
This kit evolved from a more typical 750ml Ti pot setup, but I really like the kettle more. It's a little heavier than the 750ml pot, but I like dumping my trail meals into the kettle to rehydrate and eating out of it. The design makes it easy to use that way and to clean it. The top is completely open and the lid sticks in place when using to boil water. You don't have to hold it in place or remove it to pour.
If you haven't tried it yet, I highly recommend it. I think it would quickly make your ultimate list.
Also, don't know if you saw it, but Simple Theory Gear is back on the market. Not making stoves yet, but they are selling their fire starters. Super happy to see them back up and running. Their pack stove is one of my favorite debris stoves.

Hey Ernie! Russell from Russellville, AR (no joke), just a bit south of you. First and most importantly, are you fishing for smallmouth or trout? Either is great. With that out of the way, have you considered doing a series on hiking the Ozark Highlands trail? I hiked it in 1995, it's about 125 miles and I did it at a pretty leisurely pace over 8 days. I don't hear about many folks hiking it. I think it would be cool to doing it and shooting a travel log with some discussion about gear along the way.
