Tiffany and Jazmine are foreign nationals born and raised in Japan, classified now as 'Third Culture Kids'.
Tiffany spent about 6years in America, navigating a whole new culture in her adolescence, where as Jazmine spent that same time trying to find where she tried to fit a box that wasn't designed for her.
In this video, we sat down for the first time and talked with someone who 'gets it'. We share stories and perspectives of navigating life stuck between the East and West.

Third Culture Kid:
a child who grows up in a culture different from the one in which his or her parents grew up. The "third culture" is influenced both by their parents' culture and the culture in which they are raised. (Reference: Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

いやー映画3本分より見応えありました！ありがとう＾＾
ティファニーとジャスミンの経験からくる話はホントに興味深かった。
さっちゃんのイジメを相談したこと、担任の先生がちゃんとクラスの子に言ってくれて
いじめがなくなった事はいい話だった。
そしてさっちゃんの優しさと何でも学ぼうとする欲求はすばらしいと思う。

お二人と同じ境遇なので「分かる！www」ってずっと頷いてました😂特に「外人だから海外言語分かるだろ」っていう件…. 中学の特別授業でオペラを全生徒で聞いた後、音楽の先生が私にだけ「言葉どこまで分かった？」って聞かれた時は心の中で「無茶言うな！」って叫びました😂結構変なところで外国人のキャパシティ買いすぎてるな〜。。。思う事は多かったです😂

I am full blooded Japanese, grew up in California in the 80-90’s, and first came to live in Japan as a college student in the early 2000s. The internet was not like what it is today, so we had little info and limited chances to meet people with similar backgrounds. Watching two young wonderful bilinguals enjoying a mixed-language conversation like this one is simply mesmerizing, 羨ましいというか長年答えのなかった自分の中での謎の部分が解明されていく不思議な感覚です。日本に来て日本語を学んで、初めて親と「日本語」でコミュニケーションとれるようになった時期の事とか。全く同じ体験をしました。…あの頃の自分にこの動画を見せてあげたかったな。その後、子育てしてた頃は英語を話せる事を隠してた時期もあったけど今は中年のおばさんになってやっと周囲を気にせず家族にmixで話してます。家族は日本語しか話さないけど^ ^;やっと一番「楽」な場所に到着しました。Great video! love and cheers to the both of you!

Tiffany is totally right, when speaking in English or Japanese, both your body languages completely changed.
Jazmine mentioned how her Japanese dialect was from all over the place. Her English accent wanders as well. (I think she mentioned this started happening in University when she met English speakers from all over.) I like how this shows that there is no single "right" way to speak either language.
英語を話せる日本人がまだまだ少ない理由はとても納得しました。ジャスミンのように英語でネイティブに会話できる人が、コミュニケーションのとれる英語の学びかたを広めて欲しいです。

スゲーおもしろい！やっぱり外人として期待されるのって変な感じがしますね。あたし日本にいたとき、初めてカラオケに行ったら「あっブリトニースピアーズとか歌って！きっと上手だから！」って言われて「えっ誰だソレ。日本語のアニソンしか知らん」って答えちゃったあたし😅

新宿区の成人式は半分が外国国籍の人だったというニュースがあったけど、私の学校(東京)もクラスに5人くらいは外国籍の生徒がいました。お2人は地方で育ったが故に良い意味でも悪い意味でも特殊な経験が多かったのだと思います。いつか東京育ちの外国籍の人と違いについて対談して欲しいなと思います。ニューヨークとは比べ物にならないですが、東京でもNo one caresな雰囲気あると思います

ご本人もすごい努力家でしょうけど、ご両親も異国に暮らして、子どもをバイリンガルに教育するのは大変だったと思います。どうしても暮らす国の言葉に引っ張られますよね。みなさんすごいと思います。
両親揃って外国人だと、家の中は完全に現地語とは違う環境を作れるので、バイリンガルに育つ可能性は高まります。
両親が外国人と現地人で、家庭内の共通語は現地語の場合、バイリンガルに育てるのは非常に難しいです。
まず、子供が外国語での会話を耳にする機会がありません。片親が外国語での一方的に話しかけるだけでは、単語は覚えても、立場によって変わる言葉(あげる、もらう、くれる、ちょうだい、/ 私、あなた等)を理解させるのは至難の技です。

I loved every min of the video!!! I could really relate to many of the things you discussed since I’m a ハーフ but I was raised primarily in Oman (my dad’s country).
I really wish these contents existed when I was much younger, but anyways I am super excited for more similar contents!!!
That was so interesting. I am British and have always thought that if i travelled i would rather go to Japan. I can see its so clean and its people appear so respectful. But yet i love the British countryside with its green fields and woodlands. I could never leave. Granted in winter not so much, But in summer, Especially spring with all the smells of new life. I have never left. So thank you for sharing your lives and hope that one day you both may come to Britain. Not just London though. Yet i think you would both like its diversity. The countryside throughout is worth the experience.

Caroline was born in kyoto and lived till she was 5 years old and then we moved to USA. my daughter is perfectory tri-lingual.
she speaks Japanese, Romanian and English. She automatically knows 3 different cultures but she does not care about the difference.
When she visits japan she naturally becomes japanese and she is normally American girl in USA.
Therefore she does not care about her nationality and languages. I hope she will be cosmopolitan and enjoy her life anywhere in the world.
She studys so hard to become a medical doctor.
I will enjoy your you-tube in USA.

What a coincidence! I just subscribed to the channel today seeing your video on Max's channel. Came across Tiffany similarly as well.
Fascinating conversation, and sort of shows the incredible ability of this platform like youtube to get people to different cultural experience insights! And this is coming from an Indian guy who's never left the country but have always had a fascination with travel and Japanese culture especially since I was a youngster. Even thought of doing my university there, but couldn't do it.
Still hope to someday visit/stay in your amazing country of Japan, keep up the good work!

Great discussion ladies. While I'm not yet in the situation I am planning on moving to Germany from the Caribbean. I still have some time before then so I'm trying to learn the language in order to make that transition easier. In any case, a lot of lessons to take away from your video so thank you for sharing.
Fantastic, interesting, and in depth conversations between the two of you! I had to check that my speed was set to normal because you were talking so quickly and excitedly about your similar experiences. I would say that almost everyone, everywhere, sees themselves as an outsider on most things. It seems more salient when there are obvious measures of difference (race [which is an artificial construction], age, gender, or any other aggregating factor).

Tiffany and Jazmine I really enjoyed this video with you both! I was born in São Paulo Brazil. I was put for adoption and was told that their was three countries that I could choose to go to. Japan , Spain and The USA. I chose the USA. But had the USA not been a choice , I would have definitely chosen Japan! São Paulo Brazil , has the largest Japanese population outside of Japan. So I have always had a love for Japan , the culture and food. I am definitely planning on visiting Japan!

LOL As a third culture kid I gotta say, being of different nationalities, born in a separate country, and being bounced around the world growing up, these things have been in discussion for a long time. It was mostly diplomat kids and military brats having these conversations before. I'm so glad y'all have had a chance to connect and share the experiences. Here's to more shared experiences :)

I am Shinko from England. “Ta” is casual way of saying “Thank you”. Just like “どうも” instead of “ありがとうございます。”Ta” is commonly used in England, but only friendly easygoing type of people use it and not for everybody else.

26:18 "Ta" is a short, informal way of saying "thanks" / "thank you" in British, Australian and New Zealander English. It's said quite often. ☺
Tiffany, you have beautiful Ibaraki accents.
Tiffany, you haven't spent enough time in America not to understand regional differences in cuisine in the US. 40:41 Because there are plenty of examples, many of which are unique to this country. Soul food, BBQ (many versions), Cajun, Tex-Mex, New Mexican, Steak's or Hamburger's, Southern Food, New England, Pizza's that have nothing in common with Italian Pizza (many very good), I could go on. There are plenty of ethnic cuisines from Chinese to even Sushi (that you will not find in Japan), that have been adapted for such a long time here, that their similarities to the origins are no longer similar. I would love for you to try some excellent examples of food here that you will not find anywhere else in the world (at least as good). Please start off with my favorite type which is Southern. (Chicken fried steak, mash potatoes, peppered white gravy over both, fried Okra, maybe some cornbread and finish it off with some pecan pie or my personal favorite bread pudding). None of this has anything to do with Thanksgiving.
