The dive brakes aren't actually dive breaks. They act like brakes because of the added parasitic and induced drag, but they really are are dive recovery flaps. They increase the lift on the wing and help combat compressibility effects. That's why they also increase turn at high speeds.
I play war thunder intermittently, but still find your videos to be fascinating. Your videos are very informative. Was put in a game with you once - forget what tier/nation. Keep up the good work m8.

I really see the uniqueness in how you operate each aircraft. It’s like you use their quirks to the advantage, and it makes it quite entertaining to see how aircraft that seem underpowered can be made into murderers.
The airbrake key on the P-38L doesn't actually trigger an airbrake. It triggers flaps on the wings designed to deal with the P-38's high speed control lockup issues.

So instead of being able to replace the complete wiring harness of the plane by removing panels, I had to use 4' long screw driver and...... let's just say it became a real b!tch and I hope the owner crashes and dies. That job cost me a lot of cuss words and blood. Awesome plane though.
I would recommend you playing out the P51 D30 for a future video. I have been playing it recently and fell in love with it! I was actually able to get 4 kills in one match against Russia and 2 kill match against Japanese. And I’m usually crap at playing out props. Anyways it’s just a recommendation. GG on the videos.
I enjoy flying the Lightnings, but the Germans can be tricky to take on in them like you said. I have the best luck against Japan and Russia in them. Great video btw! I learned a lot from you, green fury, and VanSinn! I’m not the greatest but I can hold my own! My aim is even getting better slowly! XD
"Bad turn" But Adam, Fowler flaps! I've only tried the P-38G, but it seems to turn better than 109s at the same tier spaded. And the flaps are awesome for spiral climbs.
Only turns better than Bf109s if you use flaps and they don't, or you both use takeoff/landing flaps. Think of it as bad turn, but good flaps that can compensate.
5:59 "All in all, there are many fighters at a similar BR that are better than the P-38L , such as the P-47s and P-51s." This was spot on at the time, and is painfully even more true now. With the nerf to the rollrate, and lack of its historical *excellent* stall characteristics (maneuverability near and in a stall, stall recovery, etc), this plane is one of the worst 4.7s, IMO. This isn't even mentioning the "floatiness" of the controls, which makes it very difficult to get guns on target. It should be able to excel in BnZ, which it does, but also low speed dogfights. This isn't to say it would be a zero below 200kmh. It should do well at low speeds because of the missing stall characteristics, not necessarily overall maneuverability. In a flat turn at most speeds, a 109 should be able to outdo a P-38, but only slightly. The 38 should have an edge as the speeds become very low, due to the high-lift wing and fowler flaps, ridiculous amounts of engine power, and its famed stall-speed handling. Instead, it only really performs at high altitude, and lacks the maneuverability to capitalize on an energy advantage in any sort of stall or energy fight. As a BnZ aircraft, it can be lethal, but it's just lacking in any other department. It seems Gaijin interpreted or modeled the excellent low speed handling incorrectly, as the P-38 can prop hang very well, but becomes a brick at low speeds, especially in the vertical. Nosing it over a hammerhead is incredibly difficult, as you pointed out, and all the control surfaces become incredibly sluggish below 200kph. Overall, its representation in war thunder is quite disappointing.
I think the stall speed itself (without flaps) is pretty high compared to single engined fighters it was facing like the Bf109, because it has a high wingloading. Stall recovery might have been good though, I don't know. It's a very close dogfight between the Bf109G2/Trop and the P38, I made a dogfight video between the 2 of them and it was intensely close! So I think that part is modeled fine. Main weird thing for me is how it takes ages to complete a low speed loop. Sometimes it's a good thing, but you can't make the choice.

On paper it looks like a really good plane, but I just can't seem to master it.
Yeah I have the same opinion. The huge wings actually blocked my view when aiming a few times, leading to missed opportunities. Elevator was sniped by a G55 from over 0.95km away.
I would have been a bit frustrated that I got strafed on a airfield. But that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t do the same. That is not a game changing opportunity to pass up.

It does by quite a bit. The P-38s, when they can use their flaps, will out turn any German or American fighter not Navy or in the Cobra family with combat flaps. With takeoff flaps you can out turn pretty much anything but the best turning fighters in game which still includes most everything Japanese. That said due to their immense weight they don't have the greatest P/W and they don't accelerate particularly fast relative to single engined fighters so turn fight with care in a P-38 as you will be potentially making yourself a very easy target for the next enemy. That said the P-38s in game are notably gimped. The biggest issue is that the rip speed is the onset of compressibility effects on the tail unit rather than an actual damage to the aircraft limit. Thus taking the L for the dive flaps is completely meaningless since you can't actually use them at speeds where they would actually provide the greatest use which would allow you to dive aggressively with it. Personally I actually like flying the 38s over the P-47s and P-51s. I think that might be more because of uniqueness than anything else though.
jerckï72 J or L will very consistently out-turn any 109 from the G-6 and up, and they are about equal to the G-2 in turning ability at anywhere from low to medium altitudes (they’re insanely better than any 109 at high alts)
they added a new set of belts ... before that default were the best if you wanted tracers as it has 2 HE for 1 AP, but now air targets have 3 HE for 1 AP which is nice ^^
Hey Adam what do you think about Doras FM gajin i think specialy limited AOA to about 1/3 of normal by using instructor and you are able to use full elevator when landing flaps are deployed thus that elevator stiffening at high speeds shouldnt take plase when you are using only 1/3 of your elevator and doras had an innowative fligt control system composed of pushers and control cables instead of pulleys. So where is logic in that fm?
Their AoA isn't limited to 1/3 normal, unless you're talking about at high speed. Normal is around 11°-12°, and it achieves that certainly. Control stiffening at high speed prevents the elevator from deflecting enough to give the wing that high of an AoA, though that has been buffed in 1.77, there's a lot less elevator stiffening on Fw190s now. You are right that Fw190Ds especially should be the aircraft among the least affected by control stiffening. Prior to 1.77 I had the same opinion about the FM, but now it's reasonable.
Adam514 I read reproduction of manual and it said that elevator could deflect 20deg upwords and 21 downwords but I ll have to confirm that and about elevator i meant that by pressing key it deflects about 20deg and then comes back to about 8 deg and is blocked by instructor (? to avoid stalling? ) even if normaly you could counter with a rudder (i flown it in IL 2 sturmovik 1946 ) BTW thanks for response man always glad to talk about aviation
Adam514 By eyeballing xd well you have to agree that you cant fully deflect elevator longer than like a second when flying about 400-450 compare deflection in test flight on a runway and when airborne (try also with flaps). How to enable that box with thrust power deflection etc. I never used it and im guessing you are talking about that
Yes of course, because the instructor limits your elevator to achieve the maximum lift at around 12° AoA. Pulling more would bleed more speed and make you turn slower.

I'm glad you like them! K4 is the fastest Bf109 under 6km, and also the fastest climbing under 6km, so it's the best 109 at low alt. The G10 is the second fastest under 6km and second fastest climbing under 6km, and the fastest above 6km. It's the best 109 at high alt, and it's pretty good at low altitude as well since it outruns 5.7 Spitfires which is very important. Their turn is similar with G10 being slightly better than the K4. All in all, if you fight at higher altitudes you should use the G10, if not you're better off with the K4.
Adam514 i'd like to know more about the g series vs k series in terms of maneuverability both at high and low speed and i'd like to know which one is better at low and highspeed also which has better maneuvering energy retention
It's pretty hard to say. At low and medium speeds, G probably has the slight advantage in maneuverability, while the K4 has the slight advantage at speeds over 600km/h. K4 would have better maneuvering ER because it has more power while turning worse than the G.
Alternatively, the first IL-10, at least in ground battles it surprises people and it keeps up with p51s (at least low flying ones). Has surprisingly decent maneuverability. The guns are good.
Jacket Spriel, it's true. I used to have a blast in that thing; rolling like a god, giving the 190D a run for its money and pulling ridiculous things, making 109K's look like tasty, energyless shrimp. This thing was ALMOST... Almost as good as the P-47N or P-51-D30 ever was.
There are videos on UA-cam already explaining Manual Engine Controls (MEC) and how to set it up. My control setup isn't intuitive at all, you don't want mine.

Yeah you see them under the wing like little triangles when deployed. Adds 0.5Gs or so to the turn when I tested it.

Strafing on AF is fair game. Never ever should a group of allies land at the same time. 1-2 should keep the watch while others repair.

I have to disagree with you on the 109s having better turn than the P-38. The Fowler flaps on the P-38 make a huge difference.
At low speed (below flap rip speed), I think the P38 does turn better. Over 450 though the Bf109 will outturn you. I've tried.

How do you know the ° deflected in WT? WT only gives the % deflected.

Adam514 i'd like to know more about the g series vs k series in terms of maneuverability both at high and low speed and i'd like to know which one is better at low and highspeed also which has better maneuvering energy retention
It's pretty hard to say. At low and medium speeds, G probably has the slight advantage in maneuverability, while the K4 has the slight advantage at speeds over 600km/h. K4 would have better maneuvering ER because it has more power while turning worse than the G.

Alternatively, the first IL-10, at least in ground battles it surprises people and it keeps up with p51s (at least low flying ones). Has surprisingly decent maneuverability. The guns are good.
Did you ever fly the L before it was nerfed? Tesh an i loved it since it could turn with a lot of planes and its elevator wasnt shit.
Nope unfortunately, I didn't even know it had been nerfed. I've got like 40 games across all P38 variants lol, not a fan.

It will improve the turn at high speed, but you'll bleed speed faster. Use with caution.

Hmm timestamp? I don't know what you mean. I didn't change anything relating to that in the settings anyway.
@@AdamTheEnginerd When flying pointer aim the plane likes to continuously correct itself. The way you fly the p38 it doesn't look like you have to fight the roll.
