    1. Cultivate your strengths
He began playing guitar in 1973 at the age of 13. In 1974, he took guitar lessons from guitarist Joe Satriani.
    2. Find what it is that excites you
He was influenced by Jimmy Page, Brian May, Ritchie Blackmore, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, and Glen Buxton.
    3. Visualize yourself doing it
He credits Jimmy Page's solo in the Led Zeppelin song 'Heartbreaker' as his main influence.
    4. Have some quite time
He attended Berklee College of Music, afterwards recording a promotional piece for them.
    5. Master your profession
He mailed Frank Zappa a transcription of Zappa's "The Black Page" - he was so impressed that he hired him to transcribe more of his guitar solos.
    6. Transcend your insecurities
After leaving Zappa in 1982 he moved to California, where he recorded his first album Flex-Able, in 1983.
    7. Enjoy your work
In 1985, Vai became the object of public fascination after joining David Lee Roth's post-Van Halen supergroup.
    8. You have to want to improve yourself
Rolling Stone compared Vai's guitar-playing to that of Roth's legendary former partner Eddie Van Halen.
    9. Relax, and breathe
Vai's playing style has been characterized as quirky and angular, due to his technical ability with the guitar.
    10. Go to the big picture
He owns Favored Nations, a recording and publishing company that specializes in internationally procuring and maintaining recording artists.
    Aarón González:
Hey Evan, can you profile a kind of not so sought for entrepreneur type, a muscician, can you make a profile for Steve Vai on one of your videos? You do a fantastic job, keep at it.

Me too Kostas. I think part of it is the feeling of honesty that comes through. And that Steve actually has achieved something, guitar playing. It feels 10 times more real than some guru just spouting truism, someone who's main achievement is just getting others to listen to his truisms.

Thank you so much for posting this, I'm 49yrs young and in the last couple of years, I have started to learn the guitar. Not so much for others to hear me play, but for my own piece of mind and well being. I'm not a huge Vai fan, but I do like some of his work, and respect him. But to hear him talk about rules for success, that was pretty inspirational. I'll be taking these rules and applying them for myself. Thanks again

I like Steve's attitude. Write a simple song. Think about what you want the drums, bass, keyboards, guitar to say. Make it 2 minutes long (lotsa great songs are only 2 minutes long). Then do it, piece by piece. If nothing else, you've just written a song that did not exist before you started.

The more I play in a band situation the more relaxed I become. I never get nervous anymore. I feel more confidant than I ever have. That has been a major stepping stone for me! I am getting to the point where the things I couldn't do a year or so ago I can do now.. It's just a matter of wanting something so badly and being perseverant with yourself! I absolutely amazed at what I can play now. My self esteem has sky rocketed! It makes you want to achieve bigger and better things in playing!

so true, when i started playing live my guitar skills just shot up. in part not wanting to stuff up and be embarrassed and in part to be the best i could be, so others could enjoy themselves. anyone practicing at home should get in a band, whatever level you are at.

You'll hear people say they hate politics or they don't like history or science or art; some people even say they don't like nature, but nobody ever says they don't music. The most completely out-there serial killers on death row still like music. What does that tell us? Maybe that Buddy Rich was right when he said music is love (or somethin' damn close to it). Thank you for sharing your gift with us, Steve, and all the rest of you musicians out there. Peace and keep on keepin' on.

That "relax and breathe" part is just dripping with truth. You can be as prepared as you can be and have all the state-of-the-art gear, but for some reason, in that live setting with all those lights and all those people, everything just takes on a whole different vibe. It can be a real pressure-cooker of a situation if you don't know how to manage it.

Yesterday, I listened to the power of relaxation and being able to perform well so I think #9 is a great point. I know that I'm much more comfortable in front of the camera and when I speak now. It makes all of the difference. #BTA63

I never really appreciated Steve Vai until I got really serious about playing guitar and taking it to the next level. Then of course you start looking at all the famous guitar players to learn. Then as I learned more about the Man Steve Vai , I realized there was a lot more in common with the things we think but never really say when it comes to playing and I love him for that and I've been encouraged to continue my quest as a closet musician.

Vai is not the first guitarist that comes into mind when I want to learn guitar. I don't really admire his style that much.
But I love his compositions. It has so much hardwork and passion put into it. Same goes with Satriani's songs.
And his hardwork, enthusiasm, and passion makes this video a credible and powerful one. Thank you, Steve!

I was 12 when I met him for the first time and it was the coolest thing ever, I remember being scared almost that Jack Butler was on the other side of the door, but that wasn't the case at all, he let me try on his black leather trench coat and signed all kinds of stuff, he was very humble and welcoming. With hands like tennis rackets....

Favorite rule #3) Visualize yourself doing it. Thanks for posting this. "Anything the mind can conceive, and believe, it can ACHIEVE." The backflip off the diving board is VISUALIZED in the mind of the diver, before he ever steps on the diving board.
I used to be horrible at math, being left-handed and dyslexic, but when a great teacher told me to "think of it like learning a language" (I know German, French, English and Spanish) THEN I "saw myself" easily learning mathematics, and then I LOVED it. I went from getting F's and D's in basic algebra, to thriving through algebra, trig, precalc and Calculus. I saw myself as "a brilliant math student" and then BECAME ONE. University Honors in the top 2% Nationally. I love Steve Vai! Maybe you could interview Michael Schenker next~ he influenced THOUSANDS of guitarists, introducing "classical" progressions into the blues' saturated "guitar scene' of the 1970's. Oh and was in a some bands called The Scorpions, and UFO. His ex-vocalist from the Micheal Schenker Group started the band Alcatrazz, with Yngwie Malmsteen on guitar, when Yngwie went solo...STEVE VAI replaced him. I'm recommending this channel to LOTS of people. Thanks again.

that's why for me i consider him my god. not just being a great guitarist and a great composer and a great musician - he is such an intellectual, humble and unselfish person. his masterclass isn't about scales and techniques but he has this respect to his students that he talk about the principles of music and life in general to make you a better musician and a person.

"The only thing that is holding you back is the way you're thinking." Once again someone who has, "made it" suggests success first starts between the ears. Not a coincidence.
