"By avoiding pain his internal pain grew and grew." You know, I have never even come across a hint of a description of that idea. But it hits me on so many levels.
When I took up running, something I sooo hate, I learned, or rather experienced the reality, that it is a mental game. My mind would cry to make me stop but, I would check in to what I felt my body really could do, and there was plenty more running left in me. It was my mind that continued to sabotage me. I quit listening to it and started paying attention to my body. That's how I got through 10 5K races in one year.
Goggins changed my life....his message is like no other. he doesn't claim to be superman but simply is a living reminder what the mind is able to achieve when you put a mind and soul into smth. He is a mortal man who become indestructible through days of grit. Thank you sir! Ran my first half marathon this year after six months of training with no running background
I've been listening to you for a long time. It is obvious to us when you truly believe what you are saying, You have felt this book in a passionate way.
I related to this book a lot. I'm 270lbs and running 3 miles max. I read this book in 2 sittings, I couldn't put it down. I realized I am not reaching my full potential. After finishing this book I started waking up before dawn. I ran 7 miles the next day. Today I ran 8, which I never thought I could do. I recommend this book to anyone looking to get out of a mental rut.
@@aphysique Now im 278. I couldnt keep up the motivation and energy. Slid back into a depression. However I just read the book again last week and this time I've taken it a little more literally and have actually followed some of his challenges. Ive actually set up my accountability mirror. I didnt realize how important that is. I have this book propped up on my dresser and its the first thing i see when I wake up. Im pushing myself and trying to actually do the things he has laid out for us in the book. Check back in a few months lol.
@@SamirMishra6174 it's honest and straight to the point, it doesn't filter anything. The story of Goggins' life had a very rough start, with several events that could have broken down anyone, and it did affect him immensly during his youth. At some point, he realised that he had used his terrible past as an excuse to continue on with his miserable lifestyle of mediocrity. "it's okay, I had a rough past. that's my excuse for why I'm not any better." Sooner or later, Goggins took himself accountable for his mistakes and knew that his current life had to change if he wanted to feel better. As the video mentioned, he used to drink chocolate milkshakes and eat donuts after his work shift to ease his pain, but after a terrible day at work, he knew that he didn't want to continue on with his current life. Eventually, when he came home, he saw a TV-program of Navy SEALS soldiers in training, and Goggins was impressed and inspired by them, and knew that he could have a hidden potential inside him to be amongst like those in the Navy SEALS. As for someone who has read and listened to a handfull of self-help books, I realised that I knew what I should do to improve myself. But I couldn't manage myself to do it properly or with any consistency. Maybe because I was still looking for easy answers or shortcuts, or just waiting for the 'right moment'. But David Goggins and his life story just said what needed to be said; there are no easy answers. How can you become better by taking shortcuts or just be as mediocre as everyone else? To become a rough f*cker, you need to make yourself hard by embracing whatever is uncomfortable. You got two voices in your head: one voice that wants you to stay in your current and comfortable situation: "I just want to watch Netflix all day and eat chips", and another voice that wants you to do what could improve your current situation, but is uncomfortable and unknown: "I should finish my assignment", "I should find a better job", "I have to lose weight" etc. To summarize his book with a proverb: "The best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago. The second best time is now."
Liverpool67890 read the book and then listen to the audiobook and you’ll see there is some stuff you miss out on. You must know this though, you must be a SEAL. Or have done something relevant to share with the rest of the internet. My best guess is probably not.

The first instance of feeling fatigue is truly your mind being overprotective.. many times during exercise I will get to my second set and will start feeling tired. I always push through it and end up doing 2-3 more sets followed by that wonderful endorphin release you get after a great workout! 🥰 The body can always go further than your mind tells you! Don't quit so soon.

lol youre absolutely right. MRV is a legitimate scientific thing. Max recoverable volume. there's only so much volume your body can take before it goes backwards.
@@nuclear804 yeah in the book he explains it's not recommended lol but it was what he had to do. but also he says that eventually his body stopped feeling pain /healed itself as he was training (which as a runner I don't understand how thats physically possible but maybe hes a genetic freak)

Anyone thinking about reading this book you should stop thinking about it and do it! This should be the kind of thing we are made to read in school.
Thanks for this summary, the message in the book is so needed in today’s society that any form of discomfort is avoided at all costs.
