What I used to say to my musician friends to help them understand the meaning and importance of sensitivity of a speaker is this: an electric oven is very inefficient (low sensitivity) in converting electricity into sound, it may use thousands of watts of electric power but still doesn't make much sound of it. Even the best speakers convert only a small percentage of electricity into sound but those that convert even a little more into sound are much louder even with the same amount of power.
When I took my daughter to her first concert I got her some quality concert in ear ear defenders. This was in a little club, maybe 150 people. I didn't notice she took them out about half way through. When we left the venue she realized what damage she had likely done and apologized and supposedly wears them regularly now. I didn't realize what I did to my ears in years of heavy tool use and motorcycle riding and playing and listening to loud music. Now in my 50s I realized how much I use my eyes to hear people when masks became the norm and I got shut out of a lot of communication around me. Wear ear protection!
Doubling the distance cuts the energy 75%... inverse square. Do I remember that correctly? Having the distance quadruples the energy. But is that quite perceivable as quadrupling volume or halving volume? Oh my goodness I have left my science degree in the trashcan.
I believe these do specify 1 kHz at 1w at 1m. Sound. One of the most complex phenomena in physics actually. Especially by EMF reproduction. Truly a three-dimensional in all respects thing. Amplitude and frequency intersect differently at given wattages… And the different intersection is a third dimension. And then you have different wattages for different frequencies to input all at the same time… I mean literally conceptually infinite dimensions. Bloody agony to try to explain to a neophyte.
