Pros & Cons of the 2022 VW Atlas V6

  • With so many choices in the 3-row SUV segment, I decided to make a quick buyer’s guide for the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas in the form of a Pros & Cons video. Shown here is an SEL V6 VW Atlas which I already did a review on, link here: • Pros & Cons of the 202...
The Atlas is available in the Cross Sport model which is essentially a coupe-like version that I don’t recommend paying up for as it will only decrease rear headroom and cargo capacity. The SE Technology package is a great choice even with the 2.0t four-cylinder engine. My reasons for disliking the VR6 engine is covered more in-depth in my full review and this pros & cons video.
This video was done by Kevin from Exhaust Sports Auto.

I had a Kia SUV for a few years but I just bought VW 2022 Atlas SEL 4 motion and I'll never go back!! Awesome solid family vehicle! I am a visiting nurse and do a lot of traveling and this is one awesome ride. Decent on gas too in ECO mode. My kids love and my hubby loves it (he is super picky so that is a compliment). Happy to be in the VW club.

Meh, you’re really grasping at straws here. My wife and I spent 6 months testing pretty much everything out there all in the highest trim possible, Highlander, Telluride, Atlas, Palisade, CX-9, Pilot, and some higher priced ones like Yukon, Tahoe, MDX, QX80, Navigator and Grand Cherokee L. In the price bracket of the Atlas it has the nicest interior and exterior with the Highlander being a very close second. In this price range we narrowed it down to Telluride, Highlander, Atlas and Palisade. The Atlas has the cleanest looking and most premium feeling interior. Telluride is nice but it feels like it’s trying too hard and it doesn’t feel as spacious, plus the exterior gets uglier the more times you see one on the road. Highlander look fantastic but Toyota still make their interiors feel a bit more cramped than others. Palisade interior is better than the Telluride and the exterior is ok but the exterior of the Atlas was a win. None of them compared to the sleekness of the Atlas after multiple visits and test drives in each vehicle. They all ride pretty much exactly the same but the comfort in the cockpit goes to the Atlas. In the high price range the only one that felt like it was worth it’s price was the Jeep Grand Cherokee L and Lincoln’s. The interior and feature set in the Jeep Summit trim and Navigator were very attractive plus the exteriors are gorgeous. The Tahoe High Country and Yukon Denali were nice but if you want it with all the options as the Atlas you’re paying almost 40k more here in Canada. The AT4 is a bit cheaper but at the end of the day both GMC’s and the Chevy look like a basic truck both inside and out. If I wanted a truck I’d go buy one. All these higher end vehicles didn’t seem worth it compared to a fully trimmed out Atlas. The only place where the higher priced vehicle win is the engines. You can get a 5.2, 6.2 V8 or a 3.0 turbo diesel in the GMC/Chevy and a comparable engine in the Jeep Grand Cherokee L Summit and Navigator. If the Atlas had a turbo diesel option or a higher output V6 then they’d really have something special. For the price the Atlas is definitely the best especially if you have kids. We chose the Execline R line with the second row captains chairs which can tilt fully forward and slide back and forth to get access to the back row all while having a full size car seat strapped in. No other vehicle on the market can do that. Maybe in a few years when the kids are older and we are car shopping again and need more interior space we will look at what Jeep has to offer like the Grand Wagoneer, also if GMC can put more effort in separating the look of their SUV’s and trucks I’d be interested purely for the space aspect, and also the Escalade. If you’re going for a high end premium vehicle with 3 rows with the most space you should go for high end Lincoln, Jeep, Cadillac, top trim GMC/Chevy. Infiniti is headed in the right direction but the 3rd row needs more room. Out of all the large 3 row family haulers with the most interior space, the Atlas wins hands down. Against the higher priced premium vehicles, they beat the Atlas on interior design and the “plush” premium feel. Technology features are essentially the same, but after taxes you’re going to pay 30-50k more. If you want best bang for buck Atlas is the way to go.

My wife and I bought a 2021 Atlas Cross Sport in March of 2021. We absolutely love it. Ours has the analog dash, but have no complaints. We got the SE trim with Technology package. We got ours with the 3.6L VR-6 and 8-speed automatic. Plenty of room for us and the twin grandchildren. Only issue was messages on the dash regarding driver door latch, auto start-stop, and parking brake. Turns out there is a problem with a wiring harness in the driver door. Had it diagnosed and a new harness installed. Volkswagen is aware of the issue, but have yet to issue a formal recall. I understand that once they do, we will need to have another harness installed.

Prior to the Honda we had a Highlander and IMO the Atlas far exceeds that of both the Honda and Toyota for several reasons. Interior way too precious for family road trips with kids, not as comfortable esp cramped front driver seat leg room due to center stack and door speaker. All the SUVs suck to drive short distances. I stress on VW AWD with a mud-snow rated tires....cos I have experienced its stability @ 140kmph on a slushy ice covered Hwy road not plowed ....when most cars were slowly making it. F150s were the only ones to compete with me during that road trip.🤪 Just once I got a message on dash saying "ESC intervene" but very quick to regain control back ...less than a second👍👍👍

Cross shopped the highlander with the Atlas. While toyota's reliability reputation is amazing, the features of the highlander fell flat compared to the Atlas. Trunk and third row size was non-existent in the highlander.

      I have a 2019 Atlas. Reselling now in 2022.
11k miles on it, good condition.
I'm losing about $800 in the amount I paid for it trading it in.
I know it's covid times and resales are super up, but getting 100% back, I would consider that better than you could hope for.

Paying over MSRP is not an indicator of vehicle competence. Paying over MSRP IS an indicator that you're either an uninformed buyer OR you have a serious case of FOMO and you're desperate to join the rest of the sheep getting bent over by the Kia dealerships for a mainstream SUV.
