The secret to the best sounding PAF on the planet is to wrap your starter wire internally first.. Just like Gibson did in in the pending days... It definitely brings out the highs and just a fuller sound...
OK, there are two coils, each start is black and each finish is white. you have a coil with slugs and a coil with screws. the black on the slug coil is hot the black on the screw coil connects to ground. now the two white wires connect to each other and are tucked in between the bobbins.
I noticed on some humbuckers that I ordered from the UK, that the start and finish leads were secured with hot wax onto the piece of tape covering the coil . Of course afterwards, they are further wrapped with tape around the entire circumference of the bobbins. I realized original gibsons do nott use that method, but, I thought it was a good idea.
Scott...Great video. I need to build a pick up for a set of piano strings. It will be for just a 1/3 section of it, approx. 16 inches long. Do you think I could follow all your specs but just make it longer? Space the 30 some odd "pins" the same as the piano strings. A long wind but in your opinion, would it work? Thanks!!
so before you wind the copper wire, you leave a little of it off that way you attach the circuit wire. which wire goes to the beginning and which to the end...im talking about the hot/lead wires. im trying to make a pickup myself but the wiring confuses me.
Hi there! Thanks for posting this video. Can I just check if I've got the theory of this correct? Hope you don't mind? Am I right in thinking that both bobbins are wound in the same direction and the him cancelling behaviour arises out of the fact that one of the pickups are on the north pole of the magnet and the other pickup is on the south pole of the magnet? Am I also right in thinking that the pole pieces and the screws are not magnetised? Many thanks!
sorry for the late reply. I have been really busy lately. I bought it as is. It's called a sidewinder. It's an excellent winder but the fella making them has gone out of business.

Nothing boring about this video...very cool stuff

The pickup wire is soldered to the 2" lead wire before I start. I don't thread any wire through an eyelet on humbucker bobbins.
Very interesting. Had read about this process, but first time I've seen it.
Good work, there, Mr. Scott.
The lows on those can be mushy. But I admire the winding and construction.
thanks for sharing, im about to wind my first pickups and your video was a great encouragement!
yes, they are wound the same direction. the screws and pole pieces are not magnetized.
i would love to see this from the top view, as it goes onto the bobbin,
hey there very cool video grats i would like to know how i can search for that machine that cicle the coil in order to full it with wire thanks!

you are correct.

Thank you for the comment, I will try to get part two uploaded tonight.
Wow... does everyone own one of those Centech $5 meters from Harbor Freight? I got one too! ( I see it there on your bench )
yes, all my vintage pups are Butyrate
HI!
Which material are you using for those cylinder magnets? and where did you buy them?
Thank you for your answer. :)
Nice greetings from Slovenia
Did you wind the coil clockwise?
Scott; The soldering to the magnet wire is giving me fits. Do yoou have some method of cleaning the insulation from the magnet wire?
hangerrash1 You can sand it carefully with 600 grit sandpaper, It takes some practice. Thanks for watching and sorry for late reply.
it can be burned off with a match or scraped gently with a razor knife... are you using rosin core soldier ?
are both pickups wound identically (same direction). are the screws and pole pieces magnetised?
yeah but which is which? whats the black and what's the white? lead/hot?
Scott did you make the winder or get it and adapt it a bit. Very cool.

Great video : )
I'd really love to hear them at work though :/
can i make pickup with broken wire?????
nice
Start is black, finish is white, check out part 2 video. I explain it in detail. Thanks for watching!
What's the difference between humbuckers and single coil?
Really!!!
Are your bobbins butyrate?
What mag did you use
Hi. a question . the two coils are wound in the same direction of rotation?
i have the same question
MSP Guitars Yes
It doesn`t matter,be cause it electricity device.
hell.. i can barley even change a string..
Damn! HUM cancelling - not him cancelling!!
Great video wasted on a bad camera angle. Thanks anyway
less rambling and more explanation if what is being done and why.
Thin line a human hair..
where the fuck you think I will get that side winder
a bike
