  • In this sequel to his World Exclusive First Video Shoot Ever at the UK's largest vintage paperback dealer, Zardozbooks.com (aka Allyouneedisbooks), Steve returns two weeks later with friend and UA-cam legend JULES BURT in tow to tackle his SF 'A Format' paperback wants list- and then some!
    While Jules is flabeergasted by the joy of 100,000 titles to film (!), Steve shops for his last-but-one 'Book Haul' of 2022. Thanks to Maurice Flanagan, Proprietor of Zardoz!

    Eye Among the Blind Pan lozenge is hard to find? I picked up a copy on the freebies table at Novacon less than a month ago, and they had a heap of them!
    As far as I know, they were unsold copies from Rog Peyton of Andromeda books. Might be worth you contacting the Birmingham SF Group to see if you can pick one up. Actually, I only picked that copy up at Novacon to give away, but it's already been claimed by another BookTuber.

      Yep, it's nice, but not a patch on the Pan one from the 70s- which was the same as the US hardcover, depicts the creature as metallic. But those Grafton liveries are gorgeous. Trying to find the orange spine Granada version of 'Galaxies Like Grains of Sand' (which I once owned) but it's super-rare in excellent condition.

      @@bookdork Yeah, they totally threw the baby out with the bathwater: these days, most imprints have no real identity. Picador is another classic example of an imprint that lost its way completely when they changed livery. Another example of this is Sphere- I thought it was a defunct imprint until I cam across a sphere book at work the other day-its colophon was unrecognisable.

    Hello Outlaw Bookseller, been a big fan of the channel lately. It would be great if you did a video focusing on the artists that defined science fiction aesthetics throughout different eras. Ian Miller is a personal favorite of mine. I was also wondering if you could identify the artist who did the Ballantine cover for Vance's "Future Tense". Regardless, thanks for the great content!

      Ok, well that's a big idea: how far back are you thinking? Let's say from the start of 'Genre SF' in 1925. It'll be quite a way down the list, but I'll get to it eventually...thanks for your ideas.

    Those "New Writings in SF..." are new to me (and intriguing). My SF and Sci Fantasy landscape grows exponentially with every new post from Stephen. So well-read, insightful and a great bloke to boot, what's not to like? Cheers.

  • @allanlloyd3676
    @allanlloyd3676 Рік тому +2

    I never really got into the New Writings series. It seemed to me to be the place that pre-Moorcock New Worlds writers ended up after Mike stopped buying their stuff. They did have a few good stories by people that you mentioned, but not enough for me to really invest in the series.
    I have a bit of a blind spot where Bruce Sterling is concerned. I've not read any of his solo novels and must try Involution Ocean. I've just bought Heavy Weather on a recent Hay trip. Is that a good one? Trip to Hay was a bit disappointing and the only other stuff I bought were modern editions of William Gibson, so you can see that updating my cyberpunk reading is on my agenda. The only shop in Hay with much new stock is Addyman's, and his prices are going up all the time. Derek did say that he is sorting a large donation of Weird Tales magazine, but I am not going to start collecting those!

    • @outlawbookselleroriginal

      New Writings is patchy, but it's part of my Nostalgia Collecting. I prefer Bruce's early stuff and latest stuff- 'Involution Ocean' is -if not the best technically- the one I love the most. Derek is THE MAN. I'm waiting for him to dig some stuff out for me, actually, but he takes his time. Magazines? Not falling down that rabbit hole either!

    • @outlawbookselleroriginal
      @outlawbookselleroriginal  Рік тому

      I know, it really is shocking- but at least it's now December, when it's at least partially permissible -what upsets me is people mentioning it in February: for retailers, it doesn't end until late January when you do the final post-gift exchanges/refunds. It used to be that you could then rely on it not being mentioned for some months, but as time has gone on, it gets mentioned earlier and earlier and you can guarantee that someone will mention it in February now. So the retailer is eternally under the psychological hammer of a religious festival which (s)he may not wish to bow down to. It's the inescapability of it I find oppressive- when everyone is doing the same thing and you cannot go anywhere without being reminded of it, that's when it feels like Oceania under The Party. So when I retire, there will be no C word for a few years at my place at least...LOL.

    Oh my goodness! I remember watching “The Starlost” as a teenager as it was a Canadian television production on our biggest and most dreadful private broadcaster, CTV. The sets consisted of stark white rooms and corridors dressed with a few props appropriate for the episode, and the exterior fuzzy focused shots of an obviously plastic model of interconnected domes was worse. What drew me to stick with it, besides the rarity of Canadian SF, was my first exposure to Keir Dullea. I hadn’t yet seen 2001 and was curious to see if this was similar. Thankfully it wasn’t! Another great video. Happy holidays!

A classmate was letting go/about to turn some of their old books into paper mache material and they let me come to their place and take what I wanted. Quite a haul there, Steve. Great to see.
    But are you really committed to removing that sticker from the Jeter? As it looks very much like a 'Dark They Were & Golden Eyed' label to me. Like 'Forever People' a hallowed hallmark in my estimation. I know a lot of collectors consider these stickers objectionable, but for me they're part and parcel of a book's history and I prefer to keep them in situ. Particularly when they memorialise legendary vendors like DTW&GE.
