These trips are great fun! One big advantage is that if the group runs across something they would rather do than the original plans, Marc is willing to adjust when it is reasonable. There are also multiple nights where the group stays in to listen to music or have a local come in (the dance lesson was fun, even if I don't remember any of the steps anymore.)
When I spent a week in Australia, I walked to and from the conference center every day (Society of Vertebrate Paleontology convention). I randomly got involved in a local 5K, and went on a river cruise to the koala sanctuary.

Hiking sounds fun. Sounds like you had the roadrunners and the people who get to see more wildlife/flowers/etc.
