Founded in the 3rd millennium B.C., Damascus is one of the oldest cities in the Middle East. In the Middle Ages, it was the centre of a flourishing craft industry, specializing in swords and lace. The city has some 125 monuments from different periods of its history - one of the most spectacular is the 8th-century Great Mosque of the Umayyads, built on the site of an Assyrian sanctuary.
If that mosque is of 8th century then why it has roman design? Obviously it is of roman era probably 1-2 century which was converted to mosque like Hagia Sophia.

When Islam started to spread at that time Roman empire was disintegrating or had already collapsed...Yes!! One is not surprised to find Roman architects or design in mosques. It wasn't a Christian empire either...Romans had their own gods and goddess like Greeks.
