- The 1967 Grand National was the scene of one the most notorious pile ups in Grand National history. Foinavon had odds of 100/1 to win the race. Even his owner Cyril Watkins did not bother to attend Aintree because the chances of a win were wholly improbable. As expected, Foinavon did not play a competitive part in the race until at the 23rd fence, a loose horse cut across the riders causing all the horses to either fall, unseat their riders or refuse to jump. Foinavon and his rider, John Buckingham, are so far behind that they manage to bypass the shambles, jump the fence and take a lead of 200 yards. Although most riders were able to remount, no one managed to quite catch up with horse and rider. Sadly no owner or trainer were in the winners enclosure to congratulate them!

Never seen the footage in colour and so clearly before! Whenever it’s shown on the TV it’s in black and white and very grainy! Well done Foinavon!
My dad was shouting like a lunatic for Honey End (Josh Gifford) to catch Foinavon. My mum and i had backed Tower Road (fell).
I’ve always said that a horse that can get around the 4.5 miles and 30 fences of Aintree in the time recorded is a quality horse, a real no hoper wouldn’t have been up there at the 23rd like Foinavon was and even if one had been there and took the fence as Foinavon did it would most probably have been caught by better horses. Foinavon was imho worthy of a shorter price than 100-1, just my opinion of course🤷♀️

Foinavon actually ran a decent race regardless of the pile-up. Although not astounding, his winning time was quicker than the previous year, which was also on "good" ground. Of the other "good" ground winners, his time was faster than Rubstick's (1979), was within two secs of Aldaniti (1981), and was also within two secs of the 1990 winner Mr Frisk, who benefitted from "firm" ground.
1967 Foinavon 9mins 49 3/5 secs
1973 Red Rum 9mins 1.9 secs .
1990 Mr Frisk 8mins 47.8 secs.

@@davidmastin416 Mr Frisks time is still the course record , what is amazing is that time was run before they dumbed down the fences . What time would he have run on todays fences :)
@@PhilipKerry Yes indeed and never to be broken,a superb jumper who loved fast ground was given a great ride by amateur Marcus Amytage,a few weeks later they did the same on equally fast ground to win the Whitbread Gold Cup at Sandown Park, the following year they tried to defend their Grand National title on totally unsuitable ground described as good to soft they eventually called it a day and pulled up at 22nd fence.
@@davidmastin416 I know mate , it was known for weeks in advance that the going was likely to be firm . I went to the Bookies for a bout a month and a half before the race every pay day and kept putting £20 e/way on him for the National at prices ranging from 40/1 to 33/1 , I knew he had every chance on that ground . The win made me about £2,000 :)
I always thought the weather was very poor that day. Mainly because of previously grainey footage from afar. Those Pathe films are great.
Foinavon deserved his win. With seven fences more to jump and out on his own, its not unusual for a horse to call it a day. Well done Foinavon !
I never get tired of watching this !
Several things come to mind watching this:
Longer irons / old hunting style
Older type hunter chasers / Irish type TBs
The quiet riding style of the winning jockey
The smallness and close coupling of Foinavon
And lastly did those horses all have their own race plan in order to stop so uniquely together
And my late Mothers punt at £1.00 @ 100/1!!

Film had been colour for years, and this was film. There was no colour television in the UK until several months later.
My parents bought their first colour television in early 1970 (just before I was born).
Actual colour film was available way back in 1953 when our Queen had her coronation. Even though many homes still didn’t own a television at all in 1953, it was such a big occasion that many families did go out and buy one (albeit a Black & White one) especially to watch this big royal occasion , and they’d invite friends, family and neighbours to join them huddled around a little screen in a big box.

They stopped the train to watch this....what a view of the carnage.The owner and the trainer never came to the race , imagine the regret they had for the rest of their days. Great to watch it in colour.
This is 2nd time I have seen this national as I was the strapper who took Scottish Final to finish8th he came out of it with a few cuts.

This wasn't the first time that a 100-1 won this race for exactly the same reason:
"In the 1928 Grand National, the favourite and top weight Easter Hero refused at the ditch which at the time preceded the fence (this was filled in following the race). This refusal took out 20 horses. By the end of the first circuit only six horses remained in the field. By the final fence just two remained. Billy Barton fell at the last, leaving the 100/1 outsider Tipperary Tim to finish alone. Billy Barton was, however, remounted to pick up the second-place prize money."
It gets better. The owner of Easter Hero was Alfred Loewenstein, who is profiled in "The Man Who Fell From The Sky," by William Morris. The book is highly recommended. Did Loewenstein fall from his aircraft as it was over the English Channel, or was he pushed?

When they jumped Beachers brook (the fence before the melee) Foinavon was 8 seconds off the lead (at least 100 yards!)

It's only a small fence and it was the second time round. The pile-up was one of those freakish occurrences you get in sport. Fatalities in the Grand National are usually on the first circuit when the horses are bunched-up and going fast.
I don't think any died actually, if you looks closely only a few actually fell at the fence, most just stopped and refused the fence, so the riders fell but not many of the horses did.

The fences were tougher than today, and yet it looks like there weren't so many falls. Is this just me?
Jumping the last, Honey End was not all that far behind. Eventual winners in other Nationals have come from further back than that to win. It must have been the effort to get to that point had taken too much out of him and Foinavon was able to up the pace on the long run in.
I never thought I'd see another 100/1 winner of the National, then Mon Mome won in 2010.

The 7th/23rd fence was deemed the smallest on the course in 1967 at least. Smallest not in height as a couple of others were 4ft 6, but height combined width. Only a few years early it was a 5ft fence and had fallers regularly.
What might have been? The field takes the 23rd with no incident and Rutherfords, Rondetto, Kirtle Lad and Norther continue to lead them towards the Canal Turn. Greek Scholar takes it up going to Valentines with Different Class tucked in behind Rutherfords. A tiring Rondetto exits here and the commentator mentions Honey End making significant progress. Over the Melling Road, Greek Scholar is being stalked by Rutherfords and Different Class. Kirtle Lad has run out of petrol and Honey End has stayed tucked in behind with Norther. Going to the second last, Gifford turns on the tap and Honey End ranges upsides Greek Scholar, the two jumping together but Honey End lands a stride up, going clear to the last. Different Class takes Greek Scholar in the run in but makes no impression on Honey End who wins comfortably, Different Class is second, Greek Scholar third and Red Alligator comes through tired horses to finish fourth. Further down the field, John Buckingham is pleased Foinavon has come home passing tired horses and finds out after the race he's finished a creditable 9th. In 2019 this film has 3,000 views instead of 300,000.
..... and today, the 23rd fence in the National is called ......... the 23rd fence.
Foinavon had ran well in the King George and had contested the Gold Cup before this.

I agree he was considered moderate and unfancied and rightly so given his position at 2nd Bechers. Few recall now, that Foinavaon ran in the 1967 Gold Cup ridden by JH Kempton. 8 ran including Mill House, Stalbridge C, What A Myth, Woodland Venture, Fort Leney, Dormant et al. I think his SP was 66/1 or 100/1
My dad put £5 on this horse in an office draw and everyone was laughing at him saying what a waste on money it was (remember this was the 60s so money was worth more). Then he won and came striding into the office, bottle of champagne in hand!
If your father was of the habit of putting £5 on a 100/1 shot in 1967, I bet he didn't die a rich man.

my great grandfather wanted to put £1 on foinavon to win... which my great uncle played hell about... "hes a donkey! your wasting your money!" etc... he decided to not place the bet............ they didn't speak for a year haha

My grandad worked on a yacht called Foinavon in the 1930s when he left school, so you can imagine who he bet on😂

....if it were to be run today there would only be 2 finishers...Foinavon and Packed Home...who both jumped the fence.....the remainder would be disqualified for either remounting or taking a second jump after a refusal......and there wouldnt be 44 runners either.....and I doubt whether a moderate horse like Foinavon would even be allowed to compete.....

Brian fletcher rode red alligator that day he said he had two more attempts to jump over that fence before he finally did get over he then finished a respectable third I believe they won the following year

That fence is named after Foinavon, as it's the fence where the pile-up went down.

Foinavon was going well in '68 when brought down at the water.
Even before & after the carnage those in the race still standing were going & jumping sensibly.
holy crap...
I cannot 'like' this video as I was in work that day and asked my mate which was the biggest outsider, he replied Foinavon at 100-1, being very rash I called my fiance to put £1 to win. As the race started she called to say she didn't fancy going in the bookies as it was packed with men. Too late now to place a bet at every fence after the pile up I was saying fall you b - - - - - d. We didn't speak for days afterwards but still married in the October, still are.

you could until a couple of years ago their was a race a towcester when the was voided when all 4 horse fell or brought down it's on youtube
after the pile up you can see a jockey running along the route, presumably to try to reach his horse loose just out of view..or, he has gone mental and thought..oh bugger this ive lost my nag..i know..i can run round by myself and try to win that way.
Yeah, I popped a tenner on him because I drew him in a work's sweepstake (I was told I would kick myself if he won) - It paid off a few credit cards :D
Had £500 pounds on the winner at 250/1, he was a cert even without the pile up.

I used to know someone who actually backed it! They wern't much of a gambler obvs.
My uncle Clem who got it in his works sweepstake, wasn't much of a gambler either, so knowing nothing about racing he took it as an omen and put a fiver on it at the bookies. I got the exact opposite in my works sweepstake, the appropriately named Popham Down, who riderless, did just that at the 23rd fence. I backed Honey End and Red Alligator (but didn't back him the next year when he won). All in all I'd rather forget '67 and '68 as far as the National goes.

The fence they all fell at is that a horse lying sideways with the jockey in the green silks protecting it.......
if remounts wernt allowed in 67 what would have happened at the 23, if u come off your horse race over if your baulked or refused are you allowed another go at the fence, the stewards would have to watch the race again to make sure noone has remounted
Commentator completely ruins it by telling us what will happen before it does. How about let us see for ourselves then comment.
It took a few weeks for the newsreels to come out. People would have already known the result, this was a chance for them to see it in living colour. Colour TV hadn't started yet in Britain.

Today, Popham Down (if he was allowed to compete) would have refused (I doubt he would have refused with these softer fences though) and taken the stuffed hurdle with him. All the others would have carried on and 39 would finish :)))

If they are going to continue to run this race, they at least need to lessen the field. Less horses, less chance of a pileup. The Melbourne Cup has even been dwindled down from 40 starters to only 24 for this reason, and it doesn't even have jumps. I also think that it should be compulsory for all horses to wear protective leg gear, front and back. Support boots or at least bandages.
Moon Dragon the Melbourne cup was reduced to 24 because of the staring gates. More than 24 won’t fit across the track.

Since 2000, 30 horses have died on the Grand National course and, over the course of the three-day meeting, 50 horses have been killed in that same period.
