When the ancient Greek temple complex of Serapeum in Alexandria was destroyed by a Christian mob in 391, stories began to spread of an incredible artifact that had occupied the temple.
Rather than focusing on the central statue of the Serapis cult-a dazzling colossus adorned with precious stones and metals- rumors instead swirled around a large, otherwise plain image of the Greek sun god Helios. Made entirely of iron, this statue was stunningly said to levitate above the floor of the complex.
Tyrannius Rufinus, an early chronicler, described a cleverly crafted iron image of the Sun, suspended in the air by a magnet fixed in the ceiling. His account, while fantastical, suggests the possibility of a mechanical trick, such as a hidden chain.
This idea aligns with Alexandria's reputation as a hub for inventors like Ctesibius, Philo, and Hero, who were known for using advanced engineering techniques to create supernatural effects for temples like self-opening doors.
Statues supposedly suspended by magnetism were not unheard of in the ancient world. The Roman historian Pliny the Elder referred to it as "stationary levitation" and provided several theories on how he thought this could be achieved with magnets.
His earliest mention of a magnetically levitated statue referred to a likeness of the wife of Pharaoh Ptolemy the Second. Perhaps not coincidentally, this statue was also in Alexandria -- an unbelievable feat in an exotic place.
The account of the Serapeum Helios evolved over time, with Christian historians Augustine and Quodvultdeus offering differing descriptions of the levitating statue and a more sinister view of the use of magnetism.
They believed it was used to fool people into believing in magic and blasphemous mysticism. In their view, the creators of such statues knew that they were lying about the powers levitating the idols, and they openly tried to deceive others to show the power of their false gods.
We may never know how the Serapeum Helios was suspended or if it existed at all. But to this day, levitating statues are impossible to prove or dismiss and remind us of the knowledge that the passing millennia have robbed us of...
I’m glad the intro music is still here
Me too!
still miss when he didnt speak it made it more freaky
This is amazing! I have been watching Dark 5 for some tome and it's good to know you are still going strong.
I was hoping we would get a Dark 5 holiday video . Merry Christmas All 🎄🎅
Merry Christmas my friend!
Electromagnetic waves are capable of lifting huge weights, easily able to accommodate a levitating iron statue. Good idea for a modern art installation!
Just look at maglev trains like the one in Shanghai. Floats on a cushion of air and ways tons
@@addicted2monster88yeah by pumping massive amounts of voltage into it. Not very cost effective nor advanced.
the magic scroll/acoustic levitation is actually somewhat feasible if you think about how magnetics, sound(tone/frequency), and our own electrical conduits nowadays actually work. i could see it being viable if you could find the right combo of the 3.
Your narration is getting better all the time man! Really proud of you for how much you’ve improved, as weird as that sounds coming from an internet stranger. You can really tell a difference when listening to old Dark5 vids vs. the new ones. You sound so much clearer and more confident now!
Still would like to hear him narrate a Taco Bell commercial.
I wish they would go back and rerelease the older videos but voicing them this time
It’s garbage
Bullshit troll comment.
@@rafaelwins1858 nah he's a solid dude.
I look forward to hearing it once driving home then rewatch when I get home.
Excellent episode, love the script!
Please never change your intro to your videos. It is truly iconic.
That was very interesting looking forward to the next one.
Really enjoyed this one @Dark5 ! Merry Christmas everyone! ⛄🎄🎅🏻
I love listening to you bro while im making my Amazon deliveries
All incredibly fascinating!
Very enjoyable as usual, thank you and Merry Christmas 🎁🎄
Excellent ty!
They already figured out the Egyptians didn't build the sphynx, they just altered the head from a lion to a Pharoah
Nice one !! Thanks again for years and years of out of this world entertainment !!

Very nicely done 👍 luv the content ❤
According to a five second internet dive, the hanging pillar is touching the ground on one side.
No, it’s magic
yea its magic please get out of here non believer

Yes, it's magic, don't be a party pooper! 😂😂😂
I been watching this channel so long i remember when there wasnt any narriration
Theme song=seratonin
I presume last one did not use Archimedes screw, as that one was indeed known since ancient times.
I like your narration of the videos. These are clearly subjects, that you are very interested in. It would be awesome to have a trip abroad, with someone like you. Who is very keen on history, of the country and it's sights.
Incredible !
@Dark 5... everytime i hear the signature music intro, it gets me 'educationally excited'... plz do not ever change it. Your Biggest fan...
Amazing thanks l am a addicted to the channel
Babe wake up, New Dark 5 video just dropped
Just found your channel..!! Subscribed..!!
Lucky for you! This channels been around for a long while. You could binge watch it for a week and not see all the videos
The two Sphinx in Alexandria look like the one in Giza
The founders of Alexandria were ancient Egyptian weebs
Thanks great video
I love ur voice so much! ... ive watched literally all of ur videos ... the old ones were good but ur voice makes them better i cant always concentrate on the writing lol
Remember when this channel didn’t have the voiceover?
Haha omg totally forgot!! 😂

Wasn't it some Russian guy running the channel?
No one cares
@@slothonmercury about you…
thank you for bringing back the music!
Thanks friend. Great stuff q
I think for the block levitation, we are getting too caught up in the idea that it is sound, and not considering he could just be saying it made a sound as it occured.
They weren't college educated & they did all that work , Amazing !!! 😮
This channel comes off more as an ancient alien theory channel than it does documented history.
You have a velvet voice and perfectly edited videos.
Nips n hips or else I don't get payed. Rikedy cricket
I understood that reference 😂
Theory of gravity ; )
It sounds like what they used was tensegrity, or the tensional integrity or floating compression. That trick object of 2 shapes with one looking as if its suspended in mid air but has chains to it.
Levitating levitating statue of Surya Dev was in Konark Temple in which, it's stones were kept in tension with a huge magnet at the top. Which was rubbled by britts
Always our fault isn't it , because your people took such great care of their own history you didn't need us to preserve it all did you, no of course not..us horrible evil brits stole it so we could sell it all and definitely not protect it and allow people to see it all for free ...more likely your own people destroyed it in a religious frenzy of destruction.
That spire on top of the golden rock is called a stupa. A pagoda is an east Asian building or temple.
I hate that so much of humanity’s historical artifacts are either lost to time or have been destroyed by warring forces or ignorant individuals searching for personal riches. The library at Alexandria held immense volumes of ancient knowledge and culture, but it’s destruction by a conflicting society robbed us of the ability to know these precious secrets
Those street performers which appear to be suspended in mid air but supported by a piece of spring steel are a modern version of the Helios. The 'poles' in the building of the pyramids are rollers under the stones.
That big red arrow is defying gravity.
hardy har har
The hanging pillar might consist of a lot of Bismuth which when placed against each other, repels itself like it's floating. A large supply might allow for a pillar to be supported with a small gap at the bottom.
No tv, no iPad and men ruled everything. Easy to see
Who else is watching this during the day or at night ? 🤷♂️
Who else is watching this while breathing in, or breathing out?

Love you Dark5...
Wasn’t this ‘magic’ used to convince church goers of god being with them just before asking for money?
Sober up Papaw.
No, but it might take some strong magic to cure you of such bleeding ignorance.
Speaking of historical examples of levitation, what about St. Joseph of Cupertino?
why is the magnet thing so implausible?
The capabilities of the Ancient Ones are more spectacular then anyone understands. They used things that the scientist of today cannot even understand.
Really? The ancient Egyptians didn't even know about the effects of incest
Exactly like the Helios statue of Alexandria...India's Odisha Konark temple Sun deity statue used to levitate with the help of a giant magnet. Britishers stolen the magnet & many things from the temple & all the supernatural powers of the temple were lost.
How do magnets work?
7:37 actually this has been proven false. There is a small section of the pillar that touches the floor. You can't actually pass anything completely under it.
If "acoustic levitation" was real, the vehicles at subwoofer dB competitions would need to be strapped down.
They'd have to be playing right frequency first
@@alexsetterington3142 Ha! They'd find it!
Acoustic ranges from Guitar string to Sonic boom
Harmonics are key to Breaking Glass.
On a further *Note*
Levitation is Magnetic interference.
@@statementleaver8095 then why do you call it "acoustic levitation", instead of "magnetic levitation"?
@@Iowa599 Acoustic Noise travels Sideways through Pressure waves......Sound is affected by Distance over Time
Levitation is Gravity bound......Pressure plays no part in Magnetism

Maybe this is what Ed Leedskalnin used to create Coral Castle, floating, levitating the stone.
Years ago, I read a story claiming just that. It seems a young boy, either wandered onto the property, or was some sort of errand boy for the man, but was prohibited from going onto certain pieces of the property. One day, he saw Me. Leedskalnin using a cone-shaped device and either chanting or singing, and the boy watched as a huge rock floated in the air. The boy told his father, or some other adult male what he witnessed. Of course, they didn’t believe him. A friend of mine visited the place, and I saw pictures. It’s quite remarkable.
Finally someone pronouncing Myanmar correctly. It's not "my-an" it's "mian"
Egypt was element 115 anit matter powered acoustic levitation
Don't you have a separate channel for this type of video?
😮
Engineering is a wonderful thing. 🙂 It's science and creativity combined; two of the most AWESOME things when melded, yet not all that useful on their own.
Did you just try claiming that both science and creativity are useless on their own..?
Engineering is great. But science and creativity are also amazing on their own. Weird take bro
I doubt that reports from professionals just say "a British engineer" without naming them.
So nothing actually defying gravity then...
There must have been batteries hidden somewhere
A huge horn and something light probably
sure ....
Now way they could get enough magnets back then
❤❤❤❤
Hold up. Is that the moon???
It's not a "hanging pillar" built intentionally, it's ground subsidence.
Water cannot flow up hill.
Not to bad at all.
It sounds like these civilizations had the same knowledge the Egyptians had for moving heavy rocks. Just like the man who built Coral Castle. I said this before your rod theory section.
I can see the middle support in your pics😢
The idea that sound can move an object is hardly new. It's the kind of thing you'd notice as a child, particularly if you were surrounded by large groups of people chanting, playing horned instruments, or drumming. Lifting it and holding it in place (which is what I assume 'acoustic levitation' to be) is different. But if you wanted to speculate how large objects could be moved into place in a time thousands of years before your own you might wonder if sound 'magic' was used.
You might want to research it properly, and its capabilities. Cannot lift rocks with rocks.... gee geebuz 🙄
@@FlattardiansSuck "Acoustic levitation is a method for suspending matter in air against gravity using acoustic radiation" - So I was right about what it is. Not sure what the 'cannot lift rocks with rocks' section is about. I fear you've interpreted my casual musings on the way an Arab scholar might have thought as some kind of theory for pyramid construction.
This music is unhinged
There’s visible cement at the top of the hanging pillar. You can see it and one of the corners touches the ground. It was likely an architectural mistake, not of genius. 🤷♂️
Um... The lever and pulleys bit gets debunked by the archeologists who follow one of the 3 major theories on pyramid construction.
Water uphill = Tromp hammer.
Great video but that pillar DOES touch the ground you can't past something through documented
LOL "to this day, levitating statues are impossible to prove or dismiss."
Oh, this is an argument the god people use.
I'll take dismiss using a quote from Hitchens:
What can be ascertained without evidence can be dismissed without evidence.
Looks like my Wikipedia editing project is going well
We know how the pyramids were erected. Good grief.
I haven’t seen anything that defies gravity here
you can levitate magnets. with two magnets and a powerdrill. it could have been the same trick.
The pillar is attached to the top, duh~!
Do one on marriage
The boulder is hollow
You should do 5 buildings in America that don't fit the historical narrative. Should be really easy.
Yes
What? I must be overthinking this
What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again . there is nothing new under the sun
Wait what?
6:00 Yeah bc he lied.
Do not relate magic to science… it is something in a different art with the inter dimensional beings
@8:00 someone measured wrong 🤣
