It just astounds me that they made a whole replica of Sierra 3 for Back to the Future, just to crash it. Makes me sad that it was crashed, but it does make for a beautiful crash. Practical effects really are king.
I saw a photo once of the giant black statues from Raiders of the Lost Ark lying on a pile of rubbish after the filming ended. At least the train went out in a blaze of glory.
It was a quarter scale model, but it is still impressive! I was totally convinced it was full-scale! CGI still has nothing on practical effects and models!
People seem to be hating on the presumed eventual use CGI in the final MI7 shot, but gloss over the fact that the BTTF3 shot uses optical overlays and other animation tricks (i.e. not fully practical effects shot in camera)
The MI loco was name "Le General Rive-Reine", presumably in homage to the Buster Keaton comedy war train film "the General" and the Burt Lancaster war movie "The Train", Rive -Reine was the location of the spectacular double loco crash, which went slightly wrong for the film company. It's on the tube if you want to see it.
notice how the wood load of the BTTF 3 loco and coal load of the MI7 loco go flying out of the tender and then fall with them? *bet ya wouldn't see a detail like that in a CGI crash, or at least it wouldn't be as good*

I'd wager the only things "CGI" will be used for is removing the camera mounts all over the place which will give us an awesome perspective the BTTF scene hadn't. (I love BTTF and this reminded me of it right away). Besides removing the camera they MAY add an explosion which IF they wanted it was probably to unsafe to do with an actual full size loco replica with a diesel engine in it. This required a tooonn of effort from building an entire working locomotive replica, the tracks, and using a real helicopter flying in front of it (seen in a different angle). Point being dont discredit those in film right now working VERY hard to still use incredible practical effects, because truly they could of just done all of that stunt with CGI and called it done and done.
Of course it looks similar. A steam loco with tender loaded with loose fuel driven off a tall missing bridge. Similar objects fall similarly. This exciting shot goes back to silent movies. At least in both they used s modern mock up of historical engines. They used to wreck the real ones.

they made a full scale model of a british 9F locomotive for the stunts in the movies. pretty cool that they made it full scale instead of doing a scale model

In the Back to the Future film for what I've seen. The locomotive isn't a full size scale locomotive in some of the scenes. In some sense a full size locomotive was used. It was a scaled down version and for the big crash. Not a full size scale version. But in MI a full size fake steam locomotive was used
The MI shot looks less impressive, sure it's not final edited and finished but it's made of flimsy wood and you can tell when it actually hits the ground, just crumbles
I don't know if the back to the future locomotive was real or not, but the explosion sure does looks very realistic, how the pressurized water erupted out of the boiler as it ruptured from impact and it immediately flashed to steam when released to atmosphere, that was the huge white ploom shortly after exploding, it was the water vapor flashing from the super heated water. You can even see the black boiler sludge splashing out as the boiler return heat exchanger ruptured, as that's where majority of the sludge would collect and hot water splashed out right before the super heated water got released as it instantly flashed into steam. If a body of a human or an animal would have been in that ploom as it happened, those three seconds would be enough to melt away all the flesh clean from the bones.
In the making of documentary they show the whole process. It was a scale locomotive that was way bigger than any other scale locomotive usually sold to the public, but still scale. Really well done tho and it took months to build only for them to let it fall off a cliff.
The Back to the Future loco was a 1/8th scale loco -- plenty of videos of same size "live steam locomotives" on UA-cam. Scale scenery was built to hide its reduced size.

the one in the MI7 filming is actually a model its just fully to scale. in the UK we keep a lot of our locomotives from the steam era in running order so they wouldn't let one of them be used in a stunt like this.

The second one wasn't from the film, it was filmed by someone nearby who probably shouldn't have been there, and the film makers would not have wanted it to be filmed in that way. Have you got the footage from the film?
Spoiler Warning: They didn't use a Train in Back to the Future Part 3 when it came time to Film the Train going down a Cliff? They made a Smaller Model Version of the Train and then Drove that off the Cliff!
Yes, it was a prop specifically built for stunt work. Not just for this scene, but also to be able to have the actors and stuntmen do a chase, clambering over it without the Health and safety issues of heat and steam.

1.5" scale (1/8 the size of full scale) 7.5" gauge. Some modeler took the drivers from the BTTF3 wrecked train and made a new 1.5" scale locomotive. They are still running around a track.

Bttf3 was a certain scale train they crashed vs mission impossible was im guessing full sized
