I did small innertube repairs on my bicycle tires when I was 10. On my Go-Kart tires when I was 12, I was taught to light the rubber cement on fire to make it a hot vulcanizing patch and use plenty of talc or corn starch on the tube so it would spread out and slide around inside the tire without folding and pinching. Then I used soapy water to help slide the bead over the rim. At age 13 I became humbled by an 8N tractor innertube repair. First of all the tube, tire, wheel, rim and 23 gallons of water + Calcium Chloride weighed over 400 Lbs (190 kg) At age 13 it was all I could do to lift it off the tractor and roll it over to where I was going to try to fix it. After I carefully drained what was left of the liquid and got the tube out of the tire, I found that the fill valve had become torn away from the rest of the tube. Despite my best effort I could not get it to glue strong enough to hold. I even cut a valve out of another innertube and tried to glue it on the old tube. I think I put that tire and tube back together and tore it apart at least 3 times, maybe more, befor I had to give up. It just kept ripping back apart and leaking. When I told my Dad about it, we loaded the tire and wheel onto the luggage rack on top of our 62 Pontiac Catalina station wagon and took it to the Ford Tractor dealer. When all was said and done we came back with a brand new Tire, Innertube and Rim too. The Rim had rusted from the calcium chloride leaking over the years and the dealer said it had to be replaced or it would fail and rupture the new tube. The only thing we reused was the Wheel. I was kind of glad because the dealer even filled it with water + Calcium Chloride mix. All I had to do was put it back on the tractor. But the whole experience was very humbling. Some things can't be fixed without money added no matter how hard you try. That was 1965 and a brand new 10"X 28" 8N Tractor Tire, Tube, Rim and 24 gallons of CaC12 mix cost $125. That was way out of my price range. 15 years ago I bought another one for it at $658 USD. That was very humbling too. ben/ michigan
