- ʻŌiwi TV’s original music series “Mele ma ka Lihiwai” presents its sixth episode located at Kaʻelepulu river in Kailua, Oʻahu. In this episode, we are joined with multi Nā Hōkū Hanohano award winner, Raiatea Helm. With her are well-known musicians Wailau Ryder, Jeff Au Hoy, and Sonny Lim. Throughout the episode, our host Amy Kalili strings together the beautiful mele with a bit of walaʻau, or talk-story moments, that highlight the stories behind each mele performed. Join us as we delight in the classic old Hawaiʻi music that Raiatea brings to Hawaiʻi.

About the Series
ʻŌiwi TV presents the second season of “Mele ma ka Lihiwai”, an original series celebrating the unique sounds of Hawaiʻi’s most renowned and talented musicians, bringing together celebrated artists performing traditional local favorites alongside new original compositions. Stringing these musical pieces together are talk story sessions - many ma ka ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi - about the inspirations and personal sentiments behind the diverse range of mele that each artist shares with us. Just beautiful!
I think that this TV broadcast has captured Raiatea's wonderful singing at its ultimate best. I cannot recall hearing Hawaiian falsetto singing quite as good as this, with such a fine accompaniment enhanced by Jeff Au Hoy's expert, but unobtrusive, steel guitar playing. Lovely choice of songs too!

Mahalo! As always oiwi makes available to us such great hawaiian culture content! This concert/video with the spectacular Raiatea Helm is admittedly one of my favorites, but all of the series have been a much appreciated resource and connection with the mele culture "live". PLEASE if possible keep the Mele Ma Ka Lihiwai series available here for all. If not possible, please let us know where and how we can continue to enjoy all of its wonderful -ness. Much love and aloha to all. We need more of this in the world.

Mahalo nui loa from upstate New York, from your admirer. Making me homesick, having grown up in Honolulu since age 11.
She is beautiful and has a very beautiful voice. But...
Why didn't she let Jeff Au Hoy (steel guitar player) take a break often; instead of just sing all the way through the song. Sad indeed. There is NO other instrument in the world that is as beautiful as the steel guitar. Yet many singers and/or bands push them in the background and rarely give them the highlights they sorely deserve. Why?
I call it jealousy. Why not let Jeff "shine"; since he is one of THE greatest Hawaiian steel guitar players on earth? Why? He often reminds me of Jerry Byrd (THE greatest laptop player that will ever be).
Sad indeed.
