It's 10 years since this album came out and what a beautiful collection of songs it is. I still listen to this, and it still means so much to me, thank you.
This song, Martin's voice...just pure beauty. Quite timeless. It sounded perfect 8 years ago. Its sounds perfect today. It will sound perfect 20 years from now. I hope I can enjoy it for 20 more years...or longer.
It's hard to believe such an utterly beautiful song's got so little views (and I won't even start on Darling Sorrow!). I feel somehow privileged to know it. Martin, your voice's been haunting me since Olympian. It touches my heart in ways I can't even describe... Whenever I listen to your songs, I just have to close my eyes and I'm floating in another world, far away from the greyness of reality...
I totally agree. My top ten songs of all time include three Gene/Martin songs. The injustice this man has endured is astonishing. Martin's subscribers should undoubtedly be higher. Who owns the legal rights to the name "Gene"? Perhaps that would help to be more accessible? Keep writing, Martin we need your words and wonderful melodies.
@@andrewcottrell9811 That is so spooky, three years on and I have made almost the exact same comment..........but on another track//video......so cool:)
I applaud Martin Rossiter for the album, ‘Defenestration of St. Martin’ and it’s touching, cinematic suite of ballads. As a young man I cherished the songs written with Gene and wore out my 7’ of ‘fighting fit/drawn into the deep end’. This new material pulls the same heart strings it did 16 years ago. Martin Rossiter is the truth. His music must be heard.
Gene were one of my favourite bands when I was in my teens. I've just heard this for the first time today and it has taken my breath away. I can't wait to hear the rest of the album. Thank you Martin for such incredibly beautiful music x
What a beautiful song. This has inspired me to revisit Olympian. There was a time when it was never off my CD player. I love Martin's voice. He can make an ordinary song extraordinary.
I've been a gene fan since i was 15 and I'm 41 now everything they put out as a band or himself as a solo artist is just stunning. So much of what I listened to at 15 I grew out of but he makes as much sense to me now as he ever did. Fucking legend
My dad died 2 years ago and he always listened to gene and martin rossiter, this song in particular, it represented his life on how my mother would always be gone and we never really saw her growing up, The worst thing was they both wouldn't move on they kept using each other for over 30 years, she would be out with other men all the time and he would be at home with us. Love my dad, i am made up how much he had inspired me to behave, have respect and be rational with other people. when he was drunk he would blast this song on hug and slobber all over me telling me he loves me
Always been a fan of Gene mainly Martin's voice. You don't often hear a distinctly English accent in many singing voices but each word is so carefully articulated. This reminds me of his fantastic cover of "Nightswimming" but dare I say - is even better? It doesn't need guitars or drums. English, elegiac, elegant.
This song has been stuck in my head for weeks now!! I think what makes it amazing is the simplicity... Love this!! Even figured the chords for acoustic guitar, cant stop playing it. Easily one of the best songs of 2012 so far.
I went to see Marting on Tuesday at the Wedgewood Rooms, Portsmouth. A quite incredible gig, just a great voice, a piano and amazing songs. One of the best gigs I have been to for years.
Another Australian here that loves Gene. So happy to hear Martin Rossiter back from the wilderness. Memories of living in London are flooding back. Please come to Australia. Beautiful voice, beautiful video.
this song's just made my day... pure and perfect songwriting and shows that anything is possible in 2013, good music's not dead if one can achieve such a beautiful song. Best thing I've heard for ages. Thanks Martin!
Ohhhh man! You'd never heard Gene? Still my favorite band to date. LOVE LOVE LOVE Gene! I had the chance to meet them a few times. Hi Martin! Lovely to hear your voice again.
What a truly beautiful song. Loved Martin's work since before Gene's first album, lost touch with his work for a while and I can't believe the guy can still put out songs like this. Stunning. I'm really glad I found this, and I'm off to Mr Ebay to get the album. I may be some time.......
Martin - I was a huge Gene fan in the 90's and loved Olympian!! Great to see you back - listening to your beautiful music all the way from Australia - maybe one day you will come and play down under??....
So wonderful to hear this voice again! Great song and sound here. Saw you and Gene in Chicago in the early 2000's, one of the best shows ever. Much love from the states to you!
I was a huge Gene fan back in the day and still am. I was thrilled to hear you have an album out and what can I say????? It is simply stunning. It has been on constant repeat.
Martin - I heard this song for the first time on radio 2 last night, God bless shazam! I apologies but I had never heard of Gene but I now look forward to listening to the rest of your album! Well done a truly beautiful song.
The most beautiful voice and song I've heard in such a long time! I've missed you Martin. You sound even better now than your Gene days.. stunning! I'm home again.. (P.S. Please return to Manchester again soon!!)
How come that I used to live in Wales for more than 2 years without knowing your music??? please come to Germany for a few its, preferably cologne area ;) good luck!! xx
today I found out in a way gene is back I have dreamed of it since gene ended. I have been a gene fan since 96. dawn to the deep end is my most loved album and song. welcome back martin you are wonderful and I hope this solo album is just the start of the new gene age
Has it really been nearly 8 years this November ? still and always a beautifull song that I listen to all the time, taken from an amazing album. Thank you Martin, this is so powerful.
So driver take me home And take your time, know I don't mind For the one I'm sat beside So full of wine, it's all mine And sometimes you just know That it's your time, it all seems right I can't let this one go, slide over I've been waiting for you Stop fooling around, drop anchor with me You been at sea for far too long Don't make a sound, lay your head on me Drop anchor with me So driver wet your coat I'm dead inside, if I don't know For the one you sat beside I thought was mine But who am I She's never worn that coat and never lied Until tonight Still I can't let this one go Pull over, I been waiting for you Stop fooling around, drop anchor with me You been at sea for far too long Don't make a sound, lay your head on me Drop anchor with me Now I've made up my mind Know I'm not blind With you I will collide.
great great song.paints a realy sad pic in the minds eye.still a brilliant tune, interesting and stron flasetto parts, whats the video filmed with, really fits the song and offers another later of mystery,
Was in Brighton for the weekend and went along to the Brighton Dome on Friday night to discover some new music. Good humour, great piano work and truly sublime vocals - lyrics sung with such emotion. Wonderful.
Amazing tune.....hopefully one day it’s gets a play in a blockbuster movie or something. Maybe then it and Martin will get the recognition he deserves......
I'll level with you I haven't bought or downloaded an album for about five years and despite having been a fan of Gene I stumbled upon this by mistake. Martin I think I forgot that music can actually make you feel anything. With this you have woken that part of me from a lengthy slumber. I only wish there were any record shops here in Aberdeen left to buy the album from. I shall wait patiently for the postman. Thank you.
A great surprise today...I was listening to Gene this morning and I wanted to post a song on fb friend's page (I've seen two times Gene live in Turin @Barrumba many many years ago with him) and I've found this...Lovely and breathtaking. I have to buy your "new" music now!
I think the world needs some new Martin Rossiter releases...
Even more so today.
It's 10 years since this album came out and what a beautiful collection of songs it is. I still listen to this, and it still means so much to me, thank you.

This is possibly one of the most gorgeous things I've heard in a few years. The album is fantastic. Absolutely worth the wait.
One of the most beautiful songs I've heard.
Musical genius. I have never heard a bad song by Martin Rossiter. A very talented man!!
Gene were one of my favourite bands when I was in my teens. I've just heard this for the first time today and it has taken my breath away. I can't wait to hear the rest of the album. Thank you Martin for such incredibly beautiful music x
loved this voice since mid 90s...so good to have it back...as good as ever
I can’t believe this song is 9 years old already! Genius Martin. ❤️😎
I have totally fallen in love with this song!! Martin is a creative vocal genius, so much poignancy and emotion.
Just sublime!! 🤘🎶😢🎶🤘
What a beautiful song. This has inspired me to revisit Olympian. There was a time when it was never off my CD player. I love Martin's voice. He can make an ordinary song extraordinary.
Loved this last year and forgot all about it, led here from watching Gene songs on a mates recommendation....fecking love youtube!
I've been a gene fan since i was 15 and I'm 41 now everything they put out as a band or himself as a solo artist is just stunning. So much of what I listened to at 15 I grew out of but he makes as much sense to me now as he ever did. Fucking legend
Miss you, Martin
I danced to speak to me someone on my wedding day. This song is as beautiful.
Don't know how you do it, total class.

Heard this for the first time just now. Just wonderful.

Martin's voice carries so much emotion, like the sea swelling by the rocks in a moody storm. Sublime....enough said.
with gene or solo how talented is this man.thanks for so many beautiful songs martin
that moment a track stops you dead and makes you listen, stunning, cheers
10 years on and still gives me goosebumps. Simply stunning!
I love it Martin... thank you for everything.

I love the beauty and simplicity in the songs from this album, but they are no less powerful for that. And the voice... wow.
Purely gorgeous, a delight truely, wonderfully metaphorical. The pauses show emotion passionately, with purposeful sycapation. Drop anchor with me.
Well, well, well. Once again, I am haunted by you, Martin Rossiter. Welcome back. This song is splendid.
Heard this live in Brighton last Friday night ( 11 November 2021) absolutely brilliant gig & fantastic song and voice.
Pure and utter class! Song of the year!

Gracefully somber yet beautiful. Thank you. Would love to see you in concert.

Brilliant in its simplicity!
Stunningly beautiful music. Thank you for sharing. Wish you would come to the US!
Beautiful. The song is simplicity yet encompasses all the complexities of a yearning heart. I wish I had more words, but they fail me.
Hope you're still making music somehow, Martin. Miss you.
This is fucking magical ❤ he is so incredibly underrated.
Single of the year for me
Stunning !!
Just thank you.
So driver take me home
And take your time, know I don't mind
For the one I'm sat beside
So full of wine, it's all mine
And sometimes you just know
That it's your time, it all seems right
I can't let this one go, slide over
I've been waiting for you
Stop fooling around, drop anchor with me
You been at sea for far too long
Don't make a sound, lay your head on me
Drop anchor with me
So driver wet your coat
I'm dead inside, if I don't know
For the one you sat beside
I thought was mine
But who am I
She's never worn that coat and never lied
Until tonight
Still I can't let this one go
Pull over, I been waiting for you
Stop fooling around, drop anchor with me
You been at sea for far too long
Don't make a sound, lay your head on me
Drop anchor with me
Now I've made up my mind
Know I'm not blind
With you I will collide.
