- I don't know about you, but I love homemade instruments like this one. Justin Johnson talks about it in the video...but man, it is sooooo cool. It's tone is absolutely priceless.
It's a telecaster-style guitar...all original and hand made. The pickups are individually wound. The body is 200 year old reclaimed oak barn wood. The top is from old whiskey barrels. This is one of those guitars that are one of a kind... the only one in the world!
Check it out!
Thanks for watching!

You can tell Justin ain't playin for fame. He is playin for the love of the music, which means he deserves fame.
It depends if he minds it, I wouldn't like being famous .
Justin Johnson. One of Meostro s of our time.
Where are the crowds for thus guy? He seem like the humblest most talented musician out there!!!!! Go Justin!!!!!
so you guys have no clue who he is?? rotfl...do your research.
Not every great musician makes their living traveling, touring the world... some do just fine, producing, writing, making, selling, doing studio work, music for the entertainment and ad industries, etc... like Blues Saraceno. Being a huge, glitter covered success is not everyone's piece of cake.... definitely not mine, regardless of being in two successful bands in my life which I left once the fame started. (Not enormous fame btw, mostly regional fame)
I've absolutely no desire for the spotlight, or all the mess and pains in the ass it comes with. I just enjoy creating and sharing, at my own leisure
They’re here on UA-cam ✌🏾
@@grigorirasputin9507 International touring Nashville recording artist Justin Johnson has been hailed by Guitar World as a "must-see act", dubbed "The Wizard" for his mastery of stringed instruments, and recognized as Slidestock International Slide Guitar Champion. In 2014, Justin Johnson recorded his debut double album, "Smoke & Mirrors," a celebration of the art, history, and traditions behind handmade roots instruments. Along with 18 modern-built roots instruments representing builders from all over the world, the album resurrects the voices of 8 of the oldest cigar box guitars and banjos known to exist. Having never previously been recorded, these fragile relics emanate voices on the album that would otherwise have been lost to time. "Smoke & Mirrors" saw it's official release in March of 2014, as Johnson took the stage to present his signature approach to Roots music to thousands of fans at Port Fairy Folk Festival, Australia's largest and longest-running Folk Festival, thus ushering in the "2014/2015 Smoke & Mirrors World Tour," which spanned mainland Australia and Tasmania, North America, Europe, and the United Kingdom. In response to worldwide demand for his educational offerings, Justin Johnson founded "Roots Music School" in Nashville, TN. Under this umbrella, he has released an Instructional Series consisting of DVDs and books on Roots Music technique and theory. As Roots Music School founder, Justin Johnson has partnered with educators across the country to develop Roots Music curriculum for schools.
Justin Johnson's original song "Midnight at the Crossroads," from his 'Smoke & Mirrors' double album, was licensed to Florentine Films for Ken Burns documentary film "Jackie Robinson" (2016). Justin Johnson's arrangement and recording of "In the Pines" from his double album 'Smoke & Mirrors' was licensed to ad agency Wieden + Kennedy for the "Dodge Brothers" national ad campaign for Dodge Motor Company (2016). Justin Johnson's arrangement and recording of "Grinnin in Your Face" from 'Smoke & Mirrors' is featured on NPR Back Porch Music's "Best of Back Porch Music Vol. 18: Old Enough to Know Better" 2015 Compilation Album (2015). Justin Johnson is featured in Strung Together (2015) the feature-length documentary film on American Roots instruments, produced by Jon Miller (2015).
It is great to see he is getting recognition on the billboards
The man is correct in saying that. There’s way too much emphasis on guitars that are worth the price of cars and houses when the blues came from the most humble of beginnings. Music is music and a good guitar player can truly make any piece of wood with strings sound good.
JJ, have been listening to his playing for years, a great artist, and a true musician. This video to me shows the true state of music today. What you have to do to survive and get your name out there. Small crowds, small venues, and a little coin for the effort. Pretty pathetic. I grew up in the 60's, play 4 instruments, and it pains me to see such talent being supported by so few. Guys like JJ play because they love music and love to perform, we all do. Props to you Bro.
Well said… and then arthritis sets in
His UA-cam channel is pretty popular and has a lot of adverts, so don't think the live gigs are the sole income. He is doing what a lot of 21st century musicians have to do, and is rather successful. Wish him all the best.
@@knuckle47 lol, 72 and a drummer. No issues yet! lol
Man.... if only all those people driving by on that highway knew what greatness they were just missing!!
He doesn’t need a rhythm player or lead or bass lol, he’s got it covered. He’s awesome
Justin Johnson has the spirit and authenticity I am missing with so many modern Blues guitar players. That makes him really outstanding.
He is the real deal. No doubt about it!
Try this ua-cam.com/video/7KGcDX7nS-c/v-deo.html the blues ain't dead
Totally agree. Such a humble person with talent. When I saw him play near his home thought. This guy is happy.
When you listen Justin, you hear all legendary guitarists, when you look justin you see a star.
Empirism but not biber....lol
I agree - he is a star and the new king of the blues.
:v
Sounds like you need a hearing aid and some glasses IMHO.
Well said, you are correct!!!!
This guy is a legend nobody will ever be able to do what he did.
I'm new to this guy. Jesus' his phrasing is amazing. WTF this guy here is unique.
You can listen to shredders with a thousand notes per minute playing guitars that cost as much as a house but when you hear Justin, you actually FEEL the MUSIC!
I completely agree!
I appreciate the talent it takes to be a “shredder” but that style of playing actually drives me crazy. If you got style, then you don’t need to play so freakin fast.
@@skyplays5103 i don't think it takes that much talent, to be honest. i think it takes a lot of practice and discipline, that, true, but talent, not so much. that separates shredders from legendary musicians, and that's you have so many of the former and so few of the latter. but this guy has both the soul and the technique.
The folks at "Sunset elementary school " Coos bay, Oregon. Still praise Justin for coming and assisting students build their own, I learned about Justin from my nephew, who built one and sent me the link to classroom build, Go team justin
Justin is a living legend......
He's keeping real blues alive.
Absolutely!😎👍
Justin is a genius talent . The fact that he is not an international star is unjust.
Pure joy
A league of his own. A true talent
I'd say Justin Johnson and my dad are my most favorite blues players of my time
Greatest living blues guitarist- No doubt -Such feeling and skill-Unbelievable
Justin Johnson is something special.
Just discoverd Justin Johnson less than a week ago and have been watching every day, dozens & dozens of his videos, all of which I've thoroughly enjoyed and have not only been astounded but, of course, am now on a quest to acquire my first 3-string cigar box guitar either purchased or made myself. This performance, however, is one I continually come back to more than all so far. I'm for some reason brought to tears every time. There's something more than just the music or technique with this kid - it's something 'holistic,' organic.
On this day, Justin had the mojo going! Thanks for watching, Ronnie. Good luck on your first 3-string. Personally, I love playing them. Well, I love to build them also! Anything goes. You can pretty much do with it whatever you want, and it won't take much to make it sound great. If you remember, let me know your thoughts after you get one. Again, thanks for watching! Have a great one! :)
Still Livin' The Blues got his mojo working. Nice muddy waters reference. It's sad that most other ppl my age(25) don't recognize or appreciate the blues.
That's so true. It's organic ,raw, emotional, off the cuff,3 chords and the truth. This guy IS something special.
I love the way he plays the blues. Actually I just like the way he plays anything. Even shovels!
haha. Definitely!
I've seen all I need to see....the instruments he plays, the roots of his playing,...he's keeping an entire sound and style alive...resurrecting the old back to life! That jam was priceless...money can't buy that performance!
Tennessee, ...we glad to have yi!
I am sure that most famous musicians have heard of Justin Johnson and wish him all the success he ever gets.
TUNE 🎼 SLAYER 🔥........ Thanks man 4 sharing ur gift with us! U got wicked licks yo!!! ⚠️
I am so in love with this guy. He looks just like my husband did 40 years ago.
:)
In awe.
Lots of love
I am a very rusty ‘80s metal, pop and country drummer, with my understanding of blues as a not worthy alternative. Discovered Justin by chance when UA-cam gave a recommendation for one of his shovel guitar video. After six months of listening to his music and covers, I now understand the movie “The Blues Brothers” a whole lot better and appreciate blues (and jazz) to a level I never understood before.
that's awesome to hear!
Holy Mother Of Sweet Jesus!! Justin Johnson
ROCKS!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🎶🪕🎸
this guy its amazing .....
Justin is one of my guitar heroes! 🤘🎸
One guy, one guitar, sounding like he's playing with a backing track when there is none. It's just one guy, one guitar.
My dad told me that once u learn to play the blues you will never be alone...no matter how many ppl are watching! Once again the old man was right!
Hell Yeah he was as that was your pop's my friend....wish I could talk to mine one more time!!!!
Yes, really great performance, thank you Justin.
I love it how he plays at his "local" festival
Space is everything!
Ok. I have to see you at this festival next year!
Liking the topic of handmade instruments , interesting.
Awesome old school master musician. He can smoke just about anybody playing today. The new jacks rely on computer enhancements to hide mistakes, Johnson is all technique. This dude is jaw dropping player.
I fell across this guy for the first time tonight....awesome can not begin to explain his greatness and abilities!!!! Bless you Justin Johnson and may there be many more years of your presence and gifts to us all!!!!
With just a piece of wood and some strings he's playing simultaneously drum, bass, groove and solo... So much to learn from him.
Indeed!
This is awesome.
I have a neighbor who made a 12 string from the wood from .my old deck, which was approx 80years old then. Sounded great. He also started learning on a banjo with 2 strings, then 3,..4, then 6 and 12 string guitars. Says he couldn't learn on a 6, so someone suggested that and he's pretty good now.
That's awesome!
Cheap sounding guitars make the best blues guitar in my opinion
I could watch him play all day!
Come for the entertainment, stay for the education
Love everything this Man does!!!
You are definitely, one talented individual! The amount/number of voicings that you can squeeze out of a stringed instrument is incredible!
JJ is our generations BB and SRV. Its sad he wasnt around back then, he would be considered top 5 of all time.
I can't argue with that!
If you can still pull of flare bottom jeans you're a legend in my book
Comrade Starsky Right On
The best bluesplayer today
That's a stretch.
Holy bananas! Extremely difficult technique he displays! Cool watching a prodigy in action.
One of the greatest musicians of our time.
This dude Justin Johnson with is home made guitar is off the chain if you have never heard him ya r missing out He's good
This is actually the first time I’ve ever heard him talk. And what he has to say is very interesting! 😀🎸🧙♂️🙇♀️🎶🤩Of course, the best thing is to hear and watch him play! 🥳
To see a legend while I'm alive is finally amazing 👏 🙌 ✨ 🙏
He's incredible!
Justin Johnson is the man!
OMG justin i hope I get to meet you one day.
He's still my favorite guitar player of all time
I get the impression that Justin is happy doing what he wants, but I wish he'd go for big time recognition. All the old guitar heroes are either gone or are dying out and we could sure use a new one.
all those cars just passin by dont know what they're missin...
Agreed!
This guy was born to play the blues.......amazing!
I'd drive away too. Trill the strings for 2 minutes, alternating an A minor scale
@@bkehlin I didn't even hear that part. You must have listened to something else.
WHAT AN AWESOME MUSICIAN I'VE HEARD 😲😲😲😲💖💖💖💖💖💖
Justin. As long as your alive I know music will live on. Thanks big love.
Wow!
Don't know why but Justin reminds me of a young Johnny Winter.
Very much so
Amazing playing!!!!
yavo ! he does sing dance so lanky awesome......[Jimi Hendix, the person 1969]
BEST DAMM PLAYER OUT THERE.
awesome playing, man. usually i find this kind of blues a little too dry and blunt, but the way you play it brings it soul, and a dark, edgy atmosphere.
how to say... it's such a great way he play so cool so bluesy so full of life
Whatta player!!!
Go Justin Go. :-)
Keep doing it for the right reasons Justin Lesley London love the flares too by the way
My favorite Blues player!!!
Long time ago, i glanced through a book on how guitars are made and i thought it was very interesting that fret spacing is 1/17th of the distance to the bridge. Them hand wound pickups really accentuate the "tinnee" sound. Sounds like the guitar has some really sharp attack.
Amazing. This young man has it all.
Petition for Justin to make a holiday edition guitar out of a Christmas cookie tin.
Haha! Yeah!
Groovy man! I listen to you bout all the time
Humble beginnings hopefully teach you to appreciate success.
OMG!! amazing performance by an amazing musical artist!! Thank you for sharING!!
Amazing talent!!!... his playing is up there with the greats!.
Wow!!! That is playing from the heart.
JJ hits the spot every time
Fun video. So cool.
Thank you 🤗
Talent, place should be full, just for him alone,
"He's my unofficial official photographer" lmao
He's simply amazing most down to earth person you will ever meet ❤️
Nice amp sound, reminds me of a Fender Princenton II.
I would pay to see him jam anytime. Very talented.
so you have no clue who he really is? thats funny...of course he is very talented..you sould have seen him 10 years ago :D
Love it. Wish yall was in NH
Wow he is good
He's one of those guitarist that will be talked about 2000 years from now
Amazing as ever Justin. A legend in your own time. Thanks so much for your highly original and expressive music.
Loved it ...and those jeans ...
Gone!... To another place!
Another realm, of time and space.
Love it how he keeps rhythm with his entire body.. The music he makes is not something that allows you to be still and quietly tap your foot. No sir.
Play on son, play on! Awesome sound!
Wow, that was great. Thank you for making this video. ❤🎸
Justin is just amazing and this guitar is so special and awesome sound, truly even fenders and gibsons cannot compete with and get this sound ! but seriously he is playin like being born with guitar !
Zoran Ramzo Kamenycky Gibson & Fender have really gone down hill unless you buy a very top end guitar 🎸 like $3000 and up
Justin is the best! Hope to see him in Holland!
Kathleen Willems was hoping to see hem in belgium one day, but holland is fine, not that far :p
Dito that Kathleen, Justin needs to come back to Amsterdam.
A star is born ✌🏼🤟🏼🤘🏼🎸
to bad we cannot SEE the darn awesome guitar!!!! Cmon!!
Outstanding. This guy has the blues gift.
