  • After over 10 years, I've finally been able to get my drivers license. Driving and cars have been my top anxiety triggers for as long as I can remember, and I never thought I would be able to do my driver's test, let alone drive by myself. But within 6 months, I completely changed the way my anxiety reacts to driving, and I was able to face one of my biggest fears. And here's how you can as well.

My anxiety comes from an opposite point. I’m terrified of being the one in control, I hate being in control because I’m terrified I’m going to mess up. I feel like I can’t read, I can’t see, I forget every thing I know about road rules. It feels like I’ll never get over it

OMG SAME! Like I legit passed the permit test and everything, but I can't remember garbage as soon as I actually sit in the driver's seat and begin maneuvering! I swear, it's like everything I read just goes straight out the window. I HATE when people say driving is easy - uh, NO, it is NOT!

@@sun_flower8882I’m playing a game called taxi life to help me. The rules are not that strict as you only get a ticket if police are in the area. I used to play a game called driving school but the adds are annoying but that game you have to follow all the rules. Wish it was on pc or PlayStation as it’s quite helpful

Hi, this is really late, but if you are still struggling, I would recommend watching "Conduite Facile's" videos on "Vision Driving." The rules of the road learned in *Driving Theory* are incredibly important, but if you are primarily afraid of making mistakes due to safety and/or misunderstanding of practcal application, it really helps to know the driving-related behaviors and habits essential to the safety of all on the road. The ones that helped me the most are: Looking where you intend to Drive (You steer where you Look, this is very important as it influences all aspects of your driving performance), Understanding the Importance of Blind Spots (this is very helpful in feeling comfortable as a driver if you have not grasped the concept yet, be sure to watch a comprehensive video on their function), and set small and attainable goals for yourself, at least once a week in order to build up confidence ("Conquer Driving" has an amazing video on reducing Driving Anxiety). If you have already passed your Road Exam, congratulations! However, if you have not yet, do not worry, I wish you luck, and I hope that this advice helps!

To everyone who may be experiencing driver anxiety - you will be ok, just breathe, make sure that you remember your driving skills, don't have coffee before driving and remember that you are in control of the car. The steering wheel and pedals are controlled by you.

I took the permit test 4 times and just kept letting them expire. I passed all of them i just never took the behind the wheel test until the last one. My bf had been teaching me and just before my permit was about to expire he encouraged me to just go for it and I passed 100% omg there's nothing that could ever explain how much I appreciate my freedom now that I can drive myself. I was 25 when I got my license. My stomach hurt so bad on the way to the behind the wheel test. I couldn't sleep that night. I've never had such a bad stomach ache just from anxiety. I completely understand how you feel Sylvia!!! So proud of you and much love! 💕💕💕

I am turning 21 in less than a week. Today, just about an hour ago, I finally took my permit test for the first time and passed. I have so much anxiety around being behind the wheel and for a couple of years I was convinced I would never drive because I didn't trust myself at all. Today was a huge step for me, and I look forward to becoming more confident over time. Thank you for this video and for reminding people that it's valid to not have a license "on time". This is so relatable to me! I failed the driving test 10 years ago and since then I've been having this driving anxiety/fear that kept me away from getting my license. Now I'm currently taking driving lessons again after 10 years and in a month or so I will have my driving test. Unfortunately the anxiety is still there but I'm kind of pushing myself as I really need and want to get my driving license.

@@tunapeaches2380 I passed! I was so tense and afraid BUT ... I decided to be more focused on the fact I can drive, I do know how to drive correctly and safely and 'of course my body and mind are nervous, of course' say that and you'll allow yourself the human experience and not try to pretend to be something else. Also the brain and body do not differentiate between fear and excitement, both feel the same, so do your best to execute all you need to when driving. Watch road position, be sure to head check a second before you turn into a new street or change lanes and be ultra super observant, the instructor wants to know you believing in your own abilities, are able to share the road safely with others and that you care about your wellbeing and wellbeing of others. Know it is the mind's job to try to 'predict' all possible outcomes ... however it can't really so be ok with mind chattering away, thank it for trying to protect you from feeling fear and know that without a heightened level of awareness, we should not drive anyway because we will not be alert, so use the energy for focusing, use it to visualise the blinkers, speed limits, and so on. Trust your abilities, use the energy and re-read the driving manual again. You can do anything, just allow all thoughts and sensations to be there and pass through. You can only do your best. My first test I reflect I was so afraid that I was not believing in myself and I used it to check how well I could actually drive and how much I actually wanted a license. Be you! Does anyone have any advice on how to start practicing with new people?? I have two friends that I am very comfortable driving with but I can’t depend on them for consistent, constant practice. I’m really scared to reach out to my grandparents because I don’t trust they’ll be as wary and helpful as my friends. (My friends have set a very high standard lol and my grandmother isn’t a great driver). So beyond the obvious communication that needs to happen, any advice on calming that anxiety and taking the leap?

I didn’t take any formal driving school, no. Just was taught by my dad, fiance, and brother. If you don’t feel comfortable with a friend or family member teaching you, then driving school is great!

I'm 23 and I still didn't get my driver's license. I want to get one but i'm so scared to start driving and I don't know what to do. I'm not scared of getting in car and being on the passenger's seat; i'm scared of being the driver. People keep telling me when are you going to get your driver's license and I keep telling them that i'm thinking about getting it when in reality i'm even scared to go open a file to start learning. Just thinking about my anxiety and overthinking is making me tear up. I feel lost and I get anxious that something bad will happen if I drive😢

honestly same, 22 here and still without a license, it sucks ass 😭
but i was like that too, terrified of driving and making mistakes. but let me tell you, with time and practice you will get better and more confident with it. you absolutely will make mistakes, that's a given but it's totally fine. that's why you get practice in, even the most seasoned drivers out there will occasionally goof up. just gotta take it in stride and move forward, don't hyperfixate on any mistakes but rather learn from them. start small when you start learning, go up and down the road or around a parking lot then work your way up, that's how i did it. i still get a bit nervous yeah but it's gotten to the point i actually somewhat enjoy driving. that freedom is hella nice, trust me on that
believe in yourself, you've got this ♥

@@malbochstudios3593 Fuck man let me tell you.
My family isn't the supportive type at all.
I'm not gonna be cliche , and blame all of my problems on them.
But I got nervous during the driving test and I was an idiot and took it downtown this was like 2 years ago.
My Driving instructor was a Karen and she told me to go left and I turned right instead on accident.
And she began to freak out on me “Omg why did you do that I'm off my route “The traffic was horrible downtown the lanes were thin and the people were driving erratic around me.
So she ended up ordering me to turn down a one-way street which we weren't supposed to go down.
But I couldn't tell it was one-way and neither could she I was just following her orders.
Ended up turning down it and cars and buses were heading towards us on the right side.
This freaked me out , and it freaked her out as well but she's the one that told me to make that turn.
So my anxiety began to kick in I started to space out a little.
She was super rude and condescending going on her little Karen spiel. She told me not to tell the DMV what happened during are test.
When we got back to the DMV she began going off on me and was talking to my mom , she took my permit away from me.
      She was exaggerating.
And said I wasn't fit for driving until I go to a doctor to get a form filled out saying I’m healthy, and basically a bunch of bullshit to cover her ass because she was a terrible obnoxious examiner during the majority of my test.
I was super mad afterward and my mom didn't even care as usual.
But I was younger at the time and didn't even think about reporting her.
I don’t know if it’s to late too report her , or if they’d anything about it .
      She really messed me up.
My permit/driving ability was taken away for a year. I regained my permit because that test was easy.
And I got a call from the DMV safety division.
She told me to get my license soon and if I “scare” , another examiner they'd take away my ability to get a license for 5 years.
      California sucks ass.

@@malbochstudios3593 I’m gonna take the road test soon as well .
In the a suburb’s DMV location instead of the ghetto downtown area this time. Probably during a more relaxed hour as well .
But I’m just watching all the driving videos right now , like the “Road Test Success” channel .
I’m envious of all the people that got their licenses at 16. I feel behind in life.
I wish I could SUE that driving examiner. She really threw me under the bus to keep her job .

I relate. It is really difficult to pass an exam under extreme pressure when you have anxiety or a mental health history. I struggle with trauma and anxiety and the high pressure just absolutly ruins me and I cannot cope.
Wow American driving laws sound wank dude Im so sorry you had that experience. It sounds borderline traumatic. In the UK the examiners aren't really supposed to talk to you unless it is to give a direction. If you take a wrong turn, you wont failt for it as ling as it was conducted correctly wit good indication etc. That would never have happened in England, you would have taken the rifht turn and they would have adjusted their route plans to suit the location you ended up in.
I would still report it. If you remember her name and description, they may still be able to do something. Possibly even get compensation for the amount of time you lost towards getting your license.
examiners don't have the authority to take licenses away here. Only the police can do that. Amerixa is a weird place.
