  • Recorded at BBC Manchester in October 1998. This is the final show of the week which was aired on a Friday. Although the show was on Monday to Friday, all five shows were recorded on the same day in a very small studio (no audience) which meant the contestants having to bring five sets of clothing to the studio. Unfortunately, this is the only episode of the show that I have.

I remember watching this show as a kid and that sound which came on every time a player lost all three lives was so hilarious.

I watched this show by accident when I was off school ill for a week in May 2000 with Eamonn Holmes & I liked it that much I got my mother to record every episode when I was back at school :~)

I was on this show also -- went through a period in the early 90s working with a group which helped play basic formats for quiz progs and then produce pilots to sell to the studios. As a result I often got a call asking if I would be a contestant on the first (and sometimes only) series. Appeared on "Takeover Bid" with Brucie, "Fifteen-to-1", "Chain Letters", "Turnabout", "Cryptogram", "The Weakest Link", "Every Second Counts", "Telly Stack" and others I cannot remember. On "Pass The Buck" I won on the first day and had to wait until all the games were played before 'returning' (hanging around on set) for the final game. Fun days.

Almost the forerunner of The Weakest Link, but with a bit more agreeable host.

I was obsessed with the original American version of Pass the Buck with Bill Cullen which I happened to catch back in the summer of '78.

I didn't realise that Wolf 359 was an actual star. I always thought it had been thought up for the Star Trek The Next Generation episode The Best of Both Worlds Part 2.

This American game show title was on CBS daytime from Monday, April 3 through Friday, June 30, 1978.

I think this version was based on our short-lived version here in America that aired on CBS in 1978. The only differences were that there were four players and each correct answer added $25 to the bank which started at $100. Later in 2002, there was an Australian version which was also based on our version but more identical to the British version.

This was the only series of Pass-the-Buck that Fred Dinenage presented as the next series and the series after that was presented by Eamonn Holmes before the show disappeared from our screens in 2000.

That zero answer bothers me. I think zero is a whole number. You can have zero of something and if you do math like one minus one equals zero.. well zero is the number. I think this is not fair or right as this is very subjective. I think it should be made clear at the start that zero can't be used. If that's the case make it very clear. If something is a possible answer in math that you can get, then it should be considered a whole number.
Yes I'm American and I'm sure Brits don't agree with a lot of things American's believe in such things but I still say Zero is a number and the guy got cheated. I mean it sounds so ridiculous to tell the guy you are wrong because zero is not a whole number. Well it is a number. Next time tell them you won't accept that if that's the case.

As a Brit I feel he got cheated on the whole Zero front. They should have made it very clear Zero couldn't be used. Man was robbed

9:07 - 9:12 That's actually questionable; some consider zero a whole number while others don't. In the Aussie version, they used the former ruling.
Personally, I too am of the former school (In which case zero is not a COUNTING number).

    one question
how did they keep track of the answers to know whether a contestant was right or wrong in such quick time?

    • @marcpower4167

I would assume the judges have a list that was approved well ahead of time. And they've discussed some potential debatable answers and decided ahead of time.

Fred is talking a lot posher on here than he ever did on ITV news / CITV. Also you'd never get a 'TV Researcher' as a contestant on a gameshow nowadays.

Could someone confirm this to me is this the only time Fred Dinenage ever worked for the BBC

    • @GeorgeASFTHM
      @GeorgeASFTHM 10 років тому +2

Arguably, this show was made by an independent company rather than directly for the BBC, so one could say that Fred didn't work directly for the BBC here. Mind you, in answer to your question, I don't remember him presenting any other programme on the BBC either.
