I came to Sydney from Hong Kong in 1977 as a 4 year old. Didn’t speak a word of English. When Star Wars came out our relatives wanted to take my sister and I to see it. When I got to the Hoyts cinema I saw the big Spider-Man poster and told everyone I wanted to see that movie. Didn’t know who Spider-Man was but somehow knew he was a superhero. Unfortunately it was a Coming Soon poster and we all still saw Staw Wars which wasn’t super interesting as I couldn’t understand what anyone was saying and it would only be a few years later when it was screened on TV and I had lost the Chinese and only spoke English that I loved Star Wars. Also finally saw this Spider-Man show on TV and loved it too.

Virtually every Marvel live-action project of the late 1970s and 1980s has been released on home media (DVD). The only series suspiciously missing is The Amazing Spider-Man movies. They (Disney, Sony who co-own Spider-Man now) may be doing this on purpose or it's a "rights issue." Only a few episodes of the 1970s Amazing Spider-Man TV series were ever released on VHS and laserdisc. ASM never had a release on DVD.
The rights for Hulk are split (Universal has a stake in the character) but the TV series is available on DVD.
Captain America and Doctor Strange have been out on DVD within the last 10 years but I don't know that these TV films are available now. I know the 1990 Captain America movie IS out of print again.
The late 1970s Spider-Man TV/movie series has NEVER been completely available on home video. Half of the animated Spider-Man series have never been released in their entirety on home media in the US including shows that had large followings like Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends which originally ran on NBC and were syndicated for many years.
Disney is very funny with animated TV properties. They rarely seem to want to release full runs of their animated TV shows on home video as well as anything they acquire in buyouts of other companies. This was even the case when DVD was at the height of its popularity in the early 2000s.

Captain America and Dr. Strange were never a series. They were pilot movies that weren't picked up. Too many limitations for the genre to be acceptable really.
Captain America did have one stunt that I still love. He approached a broken bridge on a motorcycle and didn't have time to stop, so he popped a wheelie and fired off his rockets (He's Captain America, of course his motorcycle has rocket boosters) and jumped the span like a boss.

I then saw it in the 1990's on the syfi network and I don't remember if I had watched it again since. I did watch a few years ago the Doctor Strange movie and never cared for Captain America that was not as good. Of course my number 1 was the incredible Hulk. It's ashame that they didn't do the team up of Hulk and Spider-Man. I never knew about that. I also watched Shazam and Isis as well. Thanks for doing this video it made me feel young again.

    • @Logan_Baron
      @Logan_Baron 3 роки тому

The effects to make most of the villains were not available enough to look decently good, especially on a tv show budget. The wall crawling and webs were usually pretty bad effects on their own, though they did keep trying to adapt them to look better. And Hulk did good without using any of his comic villains. They would have needed to try to stick to more realistic villains. So Doc Ock, Green Goblin, and most other villains are out. Shocker or Electro could be done reasonably well. Hammerhead maybe. I think that if they had used any of the other characters too, it would have helped a lot. I remember waiting for Mary Jane to show up. All his love intrerests were original to the show. And the fact they didn't really have much in the way of love interests, which (especially his problems with them) was a big part of the character. They had Aunt May who was very rarely seen or mentioned, and had no impact on the show or character at all, and J.J. Jameson, but he was nothing like the comic, and actually supported Spider-Man.

When I was a kid, the Electric Company Spider-Man--my introduction to Marvel in general--scared the bejeezus out of me. He had no face, white eyes, and spoke in warbles. The Hulk, I loved, but I avoided Spidey like the plague until my fourth-grade teacher put on EC every day after lunchtime, and I realized there was nothing scary about the character at all. Started reading comics at that time. I remember being very aware of the Hammond Spidey, but in those days you had to wait for reruns, and these things always had Spidey chasing after some generic jewel thieves or bank robbers instead of any of his rogue's gallery. But for years, Hammond was still the definitive look Peter Parker should have for me, regardless.

In addition, as soon as Disney bought Marvel, they shut down their reprint division, canceling Marvel Masterworks, etc. to push NEW comics, despite those reprinted volumes selling extremely well. On top of that, the shows Disney+ does allow are often edited with some episodes completely missing. They refuse to show the Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends episode "Quest of the Red Skull" because at one point in the episode there is a carved stone swastika. I don't need Disney policing content for me and deciding what I should or shouldn't watch and/or read. As far as copyrights go...it's freaking Disney. Nicholas Hammond lived in Australia for many years & was in a couple of locally produced telemovies in the mid 80's/early 90's. I had read that The Amazing Spiderman was part of a CBS campaign with one Marvel character selected per month to be aired with the TV specials - Doctor Strange, Captain America, then Spiderman, & finally The Incredible Hulk, which won the ratings as the most successful & was the one made into a TV series?

Use to watch The Amazing Spiderman TV show series growing up back then in the days and liked the idea of Nicholas playing the role of Peter Parker / Spiderman in the 70s......... Also when they finally decided to actually do a Spiderman movie with Tobey MacQuire in the role who actually did a great job as Spiderman in both films , But yeah the character it's self Spiderman has been very popular over the years and decades 💯💯💯💯💯💯💯

I was a 12 when the show came out, and a Spidey comic fan. I remember anticipating the show excitedly, and then being totally let down. I don't think I saw anything beyond the first because -- as Stan Lee pointed out -- the show left out the very things that made me a fan of the comic. Hard to believe it was an expensive show when it looked so cheap even to a kid.

I only saw the series in occasional reruns on cable TV. And I would have to agree that things were taken way too seriously. Particularly in "The Deadly Dust" in which Peter's classmates stole an isotope from the science lab and made an atom bomb in an attempt to prove that radioactive material is just too dangerous for commercial use. In fact, while making the bomb (which would later be stolen by the episode's villain), one of the classmates got cancer and was taken to the hospital.

In the, two part, story (I believe it was two parts) "The Trial of the Incredible Hulk" Daredevil was tied in but he didn't have his devil costume. The same daredevil character was in, at least, one of these Spiderman episodes tying the two series together. I remember watching as a kid and being exited that we, might, see them all together. I was, also, disappointed that Daredevil was not dressed like Daredevil.

Peter Parker gets bitten by a radioactive spider to gain superhuman strength, while David Banner zaps himself with gamma rays in order to gain said strength. While Parker dons a costume to hide his secret identity, Banner charges into the Hulk whenever he gets angry, reverting back to Banner when he calms down.

It was a great show. I really liked it. Was a little disappointed that no supervillains were in it but liked the idea of having realistic bad guys. I was very disappointed when it ended it was my favorite show at the time. I was 19 when it was on and thoroughly enjoyed it. I liked the realism and the fact he was strong. So far all the later movies have not had a very strong Spiderman or Hulk.

I do remember this show and how they combined some series episodes to create the movies and Hammond moved on to a mini series, The Martian Chronicles(the books are better).
I was never convinced by his wall crawling, they might have done better in slow motion or like Batman and Robin climbing the building instead of having him hoisted up very fast. He never touched the wall with his sticky hands and feet, at one point a friend swears they saw the guy on the roof pulling him up as he dangled from the harness and rope rig. But at that age, it was still so cool even if we knew it was fake...but NOT as cool as Captain America's bike. Thanks for the jaunt down better memories, blessings to you and the whole fan base🙈🙉🙊❤🎵🎶😻

Nice video Jonny, always appreciate seeing Stan Lee in his prime, I think that was the first time I saw him interviewed without the trademark tinted glasses. As a very young kid in the 70s, this was my first big exposure to Spiderman, until the two very popular Spiderman Cartoons came out in 81 and 83. Definitely not having any of the famous villains hurt the show, CBS really skimped out on the show it seems. I mean, even the cheesy late 60s Batman show had the villains featured all the time.

I remember this show, I liked it as a kid, but I wasn't a big comic reader, so I didn't notice the inconsistencies. I have noticed over the years that many adaptations of comics end up having only the thinnest hint of the original comic in them, almost like some writer is sitting there going, this is great...but I can fix it.

I would have really liked to seen Spider Man and the Incredible Hulk in a 1980s movie. But not black spider man but his red and blue outfit. It's too bad it never happened. Also in the Trial of the incredible Hulk, I would liked to have seen Daredevil join the two of the Heroes and have the same actor who played the Daredevil in it.
