- We are back on the mainline issues once again and things are REALLY heating up in the story, this is going to be fun arc, i am so ready for this!

It's so nice to see Surge genuinely happy for once.
that's not going to last I fear. Surge and Kit's genuinely want to be loved now I can admit, but technically they're not actual heroes (yet) since the phantom rider was technically a hero and their heroic actions were a fluke. they have to exposed as the ones who actually helped sabotage team sonic's boards, leading to the phantom rider in the first place. this may not go well with them as that'll damage their reputation. plus, Whisper needs to have that rematch with Surge and actually win that time, though all the while coming to understand each other (though Whisper may be made to look bad after Surge's heroism in that issue due to being mistrustful of her and Kit and as everyone sees them as heroes, they'll see Whisper as the bad gal for harassing heroes)
After everything they've done? Jeez.
The whole hero thing proves that dispute the torture she went through she and kit still in a sense deep down want to be heroes
@@agsdragon5475 I can admit that they genuinely like the adoration and praise and love, but might use underhanded, maybe even fraudulent tactics to achieve it. they're role in the sabotage being exposed will be bittersweet, as people may then see them as frauds and liars and boo them, which may break their hearts, Surge's especially, and she may break down violently under pressure and go out of control out of blind rage and resentment. that would be played for sympathy, maybe even more if it is Clutch who reveals it, just to spite them.
Phantom Rider Sonic gave me Deadpool vibes. Almost like more of an anti-hero than a villain

@@luizmiguel5484 too bad everyone, especially lanolin, thinks of him as a down right villain, when in fact they have their villains and heroes in reverse, though Surge and Kit actually do genuinely like the praise and love. too bad the praise won't last when they are exposed for their role of sabotaging team Sonic's boards, by team Sonic at best or clutch at worst.
Surge and Kit got a taste of the Light Side and it would appear the liked it.

As much as I love seeing Surge and Kitsunami be genuinely happy, I do enjoy watching Lanolin get a much needed dose of humility. I don't hate her character, but as a prideful leader she is, pride does come before the fall.

She better be at the end of this arc because if not I would genuinely dislike Lanolin.
And I hope she will apologize to Silver and make it up to him by letting him rejoin the diamond cutters if he wants
@@ahodges1174 If I was Silver I probably won't join back. Since she did kicked him out she dismissed his concerns about almost being killed. But I can see it the other way and seeing him give the diamond cutters another shot.

I overall REALLY liked this issue, Everyone got a little bit of character development, even Lanolin! I loved how Sonic got to go back to his snarky side when under the Phantom Rider persona, and it feels like Amy was a lot closer to her 2000s Era personality, and Surge and Kit are obviously great, honestly I have zero complaints. Can't wait to see where the story goes from here!

The classic route of the Anti-Hero
There's something special about seeing someone who hasn't known genuine happiness in who knows how long finally achieve it. Especially if a majority of their life is full of trauma.
Honestly it was nice to see Surge and Kit actually liking the taste of being heroes for once have people clapping for them and cheering their names, it gives me vibes of Joker when he teamed up with Batman in Batman the Brave andthe Bold after saving Batman when he,” I get used to this hero stuff.” Cause remember the two were also made to be replacement heroes after getting Sonic, Tails, and their allies out of the picture so it makes sense they’d be loving this
Clutch is really playing the villain game well so far, I love that he is keeping his cool and planning at a nice pace. Glad to see Jewels get a little sceptic about Duo, I hope that she is the one to trap and imprison Mimic. I can deftly see Clutch reveling that Surge and Kit were on his side when he gets captured at the end of this arc and wanting to try and ruin their possible new life's with everyone. Let's go I am hype for Issue 71 and the crossover!!!
Im glad Jewel started wising up, she practically gave him keys to the city letting him see all the important documents when he was injured

One thing I fear is that near the end of the arc, if and when Clutches plan gets revealed to everyone including mostly the crowd and that Surge and Kit were willing accomplices in said plan, they all just turn against them and start calling them fakes and frauds and it sets Surge off like a bomb in response.
she's probably gonna take it all out on Sonic for destroying her happiness, and in the process get a rematch with Whisper and loses against her that time, though in the process, not only do both the Tenrec and Wolf come to an understanding of each other, despite still seeing each other as enemies, but Surge ends up hurting Kit, the one who was always there for her, mistaking him for sonic in her maniacal zeal, which would enable her to feel remorse
@@RobertJames-i8j What I picture is Surge just going absolutely berserk mode. She already sees herself as a fake copy of Sonic, so to have an ENTIRE CROWD of people booing her and calling her a fake, phony and a fraud when they were all calling her a hero not too long ago? Yeah I can see her having effectively a huge panic attack followed by a snap where she just starts rushing at ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING. Just pure blind rage.
Doubly evil if it's Clutch who reveals this himself as an "f you!" to Surge if her and Kits little stunt is effectively what ruins all of his plans. Like he just plays back a recording of her taking the device that sabotaged Sonics gear and saying something out of cuff on a giant monitor in the stadium for everyone to see. "The jigs up and I'm taking you down with me! You little lab rat freak!"
I can see him being THAT petty.
@@Roark787 one one hand, that would played for satisfaction, as Surge and Kit don't fully deserve to be called heroes and for what Surge did in issues 53-54, but on the other hand, that would be played for sympathy, as Surge and Kit's backstory was tragic, since issue 71 they'd truly want to be adored and loved, and if Clutch got involved in ruining their reputation out of spite, they'd be played for sympathy more
@@RobertJames-i8j That's the thing though, Sonic and his friends know about Surge and Kits origins and backstory, the crowd and everyone else does not. They wouldn't jump to sympathizing with Surge if it's revealed that she was working for Clutch, they'd just start booing her and label her a bad guy. And if she explodes in response to this, well that's just going hammer it further into their heads. Then it's going to solidify in her head that the world casted her out.
Given how volatile and unstable Surge is, yeah she's not going to live that down or go quietly. It's sad... but I can definitely see this as a possible route for where their going to be taking her and Kit if they want them to remain villains, which Ian expressed multiple times that this is how he'd rather have them be. He's not the one writing the story, but I still think that he still has some hint of influence with Evan.
@@RobertJames-i8j Plus, if that happens, Surge and Kit would be the most sympathetic villains in the Sonic series and Clutch would INSTANTLY jump to being one of the most HATED villains in the series for ruining these two's semblance of a chance at redemption.
I'm not going to lie, I'm a bit of a sadist and a sucker for writing like that and I'm kinda hoping that's the route they take
I see Phantom Rider as a Kamen Rider reference than a Power Rangers reference. Also, I'm starting to believe that this is Surge's arc. Amy has planted the seed of doubt into her on issue 67 and in here, it has begun to grow. I think it'll continue to grow at 72 and she'll make her decision of what to do. Continuing Clutch's orders but after that he'll dump them or stop him from taking over the Restoration? I think she'll be with the good guys, but still be a bad girl. Heck, the Restoration might help Surge and Kit of who they were, if they behave well.
Inally someone gets it the ohantom rider is a definite kamen rider reference and just like the kamen rider series, sonic's suit came from evil, aka eggman
A genuine happy surge moment is cute, but she still feels unstable. So maybe this will make her demand more heroism, no matter what. Jet follows his character, that being an egomaniac that can’t take a loss
Laolin (yeah yeah, I probly spelled her name wrong) for all her wishes in Order showed a surprisingly inflexible Chaos here, she is still so green. The fact Sonic as Phantom Rider knew that was about to happen just shows that for all his Chaotic Good, he known when not going overboard.

Finally, I just feel that Amy reference was a Noodle Incident, not a hint of Sonic Murder Mystery . I am more surprised that game made canon, here I thought it was a fan game.
Surge’s smile is one of the best things I’ve seen in a comic. Legit she’s the reason I’ve recently begun my dive into the Sonic fandom, being such a cool, compelling character, and God damn that smile feels so cathartic.
It sets up some nice potential stories too.
1:55 i think Sonic may have gotten some ptsd from Surge almost electrocuted to death
and Sonic's new persona as the Phantom Rider got me shaking in my seat and giggling like a little kid while he does play the enigmatic deadpool type villain yet he let the persona fall for a moment to save racer from falling
and Jewel knows something is very off with the increase of paperwork to keep her in her office and from interacting with anyone and Duo making excuses about taking care of things
Surge and Kit getting the praise and positive attention they needed for so long, after how long they were with Starline and being unfairly criticized by him and now they got the recognition they deserve as heroes which might backfire in Clutch's plan
and Belle! poor thing, i guess she either overhead Clutch's true intentions about taking over the restoration or she caught Mimic tampering with Team Sonic's boards which leads to him stuffing her in that locker
and last and finally the elephant in the room, Lanolin oh boy! she finally got karma from her horrible decisions and flawed leadership which may have also bruised some of her stubborn pride seeing her reaction to how her plan to apprehend Sonic falls apart and unintentionally put all the racers in danger which i laugh at that i said to her through my screen: so this is your definition of being prepared by rushing in head first to attack the enemy and disregarding people's safety and possibly causing property damage says the one who's being reckless now but i like this moment
anyway an amazing issue can't wait for issue 71
I agree with the phantom rider part. Seeing Sonic act as a "bad guy" here was great! Oh and when he possibly reveals is identity and why he did it, Lanolin needs to give an apology to Sonic,Tails and Amy.

Gotta say, REALLY liking what we have gotten so far with this arc.
This was a really good follow up from the last issue. Sonic being the Phantom Rider surprisingly works. I'm honestly glad that they didn't let the identity be a mystery to the viewers since it allows us to see multiple perspectives. On top of that, the Phantom Rider was enjoyable to watch, from him dashing all over the place, to avoiding the Diamond Cutters, to Surge taking action herself. It's a great to show that development is possible for the Diamond Cutters and Surge & Kit.
It's no secret that the New Diamond Cutters aren't a perfect team. And seeing Lanolin reacting to what she did to the track shows her flaws. I am hoping we to see the 3 interact more since it would allow them to understand each other
Surge and Kit being praised for stopping the Phantom Rider is a good way to show redemption is possible. Plus Jet getting envious to them would lead to a cool rivalry. Maybe this will be the ticket for their redemption. A parallel of sorts.
Even the aftermath of the event gives alot of build up. Jewel seems to be suspicious of Duo and how small talk. While Clutch and Mimic discuss their plans to unmask the Phantom Rider. On top of Amy & Tails founding out that Belle was kidnapped.
There is alot that is gonna happen during this next issue. It does seem the Phantom Rider is still gonna be around so the unmasking would have to be a secret to Clutch. Maybe this could lead to Mimic shifting into the Phantom Rider and frame Sonic. Belle getting kidnapped also surprises me since we haven't seen her since Issue 67. It makes me curious if Jewel is gonna be held hostage because of her suspicion. We also haven't seen Rough & Tumble who are still working for Clutch. Maybe they're gonna try to attack Amy & Tails when they are investigating. Anything seems to be possible in the next issue. And I honestly can't wait.
Surges expression genuily brightend up my day. She was so happy and cute in that moment.
But in hindsight.... she is programmed to be simliar to Sonic. So it kinda makes sense, that she likes being cheered for. One might wonder if the original Surge would have reacted the same way.

Surge and Kit are getting some acknowledgment. Plus, they and the Diamond Cutters can't get the Phantom Rider. Plus, Clutch will get a new rider in their in his way, and Jet will get the new kids out his way, and Jewel know something feels weird. Probably be or not, Clutch doesn't want them to get the famous a big bjection, plus Jet, Wave and Storm are okay with Sonic, Amy, Tails and Knuckles are good, but seeing Surge and Kit take it from them and Jet will remember that Tails and Amy find Belle, and she will explain everything that went down very soon and make a plan as well. MarioKartGamerDude you wanna make check out which franchise that IDW comic have the rights to add a crossover with Sonic. And some aren't in it.
About the murder of the Sonic the Hedgehog reference, it actually would be kinda a reverse reference if every time Tail's goes through the trash he comes up empty and then decides that the whole trash thing is just a fake movie trope.

Either be very performative or pick up where Sonic leaves off when hes out elsewhere. A prime candidate to protect restoration while hes away during the events of frontiers

That's what I've been wondering. Starline designed her to BE the hero when he replaced Sonic and ended the endless "Sonic cycle", but I wonder what exactly was HIS vision of a hero did he built into her, especially one he needed to control? If it's effectively a positive receptor to being praised by the masses, what happens when the opposite happens?

We all know that Eggman isn't above screwing over Sonic. The only times when they actually work together is when they face this little thing called "assured mutual destruction."
In the case of Clean Sweep Inc., Eggman's not in danger of dying as far as we know.
And in this book, Sonic is apparently dumb enough to let himself be covered in Eggman tech not once, but TWICE. The first time was out of ignorance, okay, but this time is deliberate!

That was a hilarious ending, and I liked the way you took every part of the issue piece by piece. I rate this review 10 Extreme Gears out of 10
Also, side note, with the details put into this arc with the tracks, gears, and other things for everyone... I think this may be turned into a new Riders game. I hope they do that instead of another regular racing game, because STR was good enough to be the final one.
Again, Surge was made to replace Sonic. She might have some conditioning to respond to public praise, but this is what I've been waiting for with her character to get. Because this is going to be her genuine step away from her vengeance and hopefully towards her having a misguided hero complex.
But ironically she's being a hero by fighting Sonic, which is essentially what I've been saying for months. She's trying to be a hero by fighting Sonic, though she doesn't realize it's Sonic.

I don't think Clutch is telling the truth about Surge and Kit when he saids, I will tell you about your past. Because just like in Sonic Adventure 2, someone could tell them that they know about their past, but in reality, they don't know much about them, and they only want them as tools for their plans. Plus, the only one who knew Surge and Kit's past is Dr Starline. Which I think he's dead.
But there is a possibility that Clutch dose know about Surge and KIt's past, but maybe could lie about certain parts about it, just like how Eggman did in the game Shadow the Hedgehog. But this is speculation, so take my words with a grain of salt.
I wouldn't be surprised if Clutch knows about their pasts.
Because if Starline really did work with him to get his hands on Eggman techs, it's more than possible he also participated in Surge and Kit's kidnapping.
Which would means he would have details about their pasts. Heck, just knowing their true name would be a gigantic step forward to discover their identities!

In the next issue, it's going Jet vs. Surge. Plus we'll get more on what happened to Belle. Jewel has a mystery to solve.

im curious about how this will end up, the solicitation for the next issue does mention "sides will be taken" giving me the impression that even with Belle presenting her story, some may not believe her and side with Clutch/Clean Sweep. Normally I'd say Lanolin would take the side of Clean Sweep for the sake of stability, but after she saw how their security made things worse during the race, she may be catching on as well. Jewel thankfully wizened up and is watching Duo closely. Surge is the wild card as it seems she enjoys being appreciated for her heroic effort (even unintentional) and warming up to the Sonic gang, but Clutch may strong arm her into his side with his promise. So that'll likely be the big point of tension for the finale of the arc.
Am calm. I would lie because holy there a sonic crossover!!

I honestly hope that surge and kit stay heroes for the rest of the series, and i hope that lanolin apologizes for her behavior, something tells me she will once Mimic’s exposed which is probably what Belle knows, i hope they make the phantom rider into his own comic series.

I feel like My little pony crossover with Sonic would be interesting. Especially depending on if it’s g4 or g5. If g4, Sonic is gonna get a race with Rainbow dash in someway. However, if it is g5, I could see Sunny wanting to know more of Sonics world, and Pipp kinda getting a crush on Sonic or Zipp wanting to see how fast Sonic is against her. That and a possible chance for Sonic to call Hitch “Donut lord”.

I feel this issue will be the stepping stone to Surge and Kit deciding that they genuinely want to partially redeem themselves and betray both Clutch and Mimic as Surge remembers what Amy said in Issue 67 about them choosing to leave the Restoration. Maybe they want to push for a friendly rivalry with Sonic and Tails instead of remaining enemies.

This issue was very great and Sonic is the Phantom Rider. And can I say that costume is literally cool. It reminds me of a Power Ranger and I hope they can use this costume in the games in the future. And I literally smiled from ear to ear when I saw Surge smile feeling and being like a hero, since I want her to feel good about herself. Maybe something like this could help her change her mind to come to the light and be a hero. That made my day! For Lanolin the shock on her face says it enough. She was so absorbed about catching this Phantom rider and upholding the rules to the point that she's forgetting about every other racers safety. And thank goodness for Tangle and her tail and Whisper's sharp shooting. And Jewel knows that something is up with Duo. I just hope in this arc Lanolin learns a lesson about friendship And to apologize to Sonic, Whisper, Silver, Tangle Amy, and Tails and practically everyone she might have gotten angry or offended. And maybe I want Lanolin to step down from her leadership role and get it to Tangle or Whisper since those two both have more experience than her and one of them was one of the original members of the Diamond Cutters. And also Duo getting a out in the public and for Tangle and Whisper to capture him. And also what happened to Belle?! Who would want to capture and dismantle her. I hope she can tell a lot of answers in the next issue. Because so far this comic run is going pretty good and cool. I can't wait to see the Phantom Rider to be the winner and expose the bad guys in the process.
"Dismantle" is a strong word when it's just her hand that was separated from the rest. Also, who knows? Maybe Belle dispatched her hand to seek out help; she seemed to be controlling it from a distance.

Makes the most sense that the crossover will be with Godzilla. The reply mentions ‘a BIG threat’ meaning it’s large and there’s only one. Plus Sega of Japan would be the most eager to do a crossover with ‘Gojira’ since Godzilla is a Japanese IP, with TMNT and MLP being western IPs. So Godzilla is probably a lot more popular in Japan than the latter two (especially since the former tends to have some problematic Asian stereotypes, so MLP would probably be the next most likely crossover after Godzilla. Don’t get me wrong, I adore Rise of the TMNT, I have fond childhood memories of the 2003 cartoon, and I like the IDW comics, buuuuuut even I can acknowledge the franchise has it’s issues.).
