    I’ve gotten really good at getting accurate “inside measurements” by eye-balling the bend in the tape. But that’s only because I didn’t know what Leah just taught me. I stumbled across this channel just days ago. Leah is very knowledgeable and a great teacher of the trade. I’ve subscribed.

    • @adriles

      Maybe the camera distorted it but eyeballing the bend in the video doesn't look anything close to the measurement she got at the end.

      This…right here. All night long. Tools, materials, hardware, fasteners and knowledge are not enough to craft a successful project. You have to have confidence and that’s what a great teacher like Leah gives all of us. We earn confidence through both successes and failures and remembering that even pros like Leah had to learn all of these skills and gain confidence in her abilities.

    • @suednonymous8587
      @suednonymous8587 5 років тому +2

      This is mostly useless trivia that you didn't need to know. I've got tape measures that have a smooth edge on the tab. You probably did know that you can use all sorts of things to make a mark, including the corner of a smooth tab, but what kind of crappy worker would you be if you didn't have a pencil handy when you're marking a length on something? And you hardly need that slot to hook the end of the tape over a nail or screw. There's usually something else to hook it over, and you can also push it against a nail to take an inside measure, too. And I'd imagine everybody who didn't realize that the first inch was marked 1/16th short has been getting accurate measurements anyway by just measuring.
      As for adding the length of the body of the tape measure, that's just stupid. Its fairly simple when it's 3" but I've had tapes that are 2 3/4 or 3 1/4", as well as ones that aren't marked at all. Regardless of what tape measure you've got it's easier to make a mark at 10, 20, or 30" and then measure to that. Even more so when you're measuring from something that's much below to something above eye level. I actually do math just for fun sometimes, but if the length I'm reading might be something like 49 11/16ths I'd much rather add a multiple of 10 instead of 3, or worse yet 2 3/4 or 3 1/4.

    • @alecamal
      @alecamal 8 років тому +9

      +Orlando Pockets when you hook the tape to something and pull the blade tight the slots allow the hook to move out,compensating for the width of the hook.Push hook into a wall and the hook slides in,once again compensating for the width of the hook giving you an accurate measurement.

    • @alwaysarmed88
      @alwaysarmed88 8 років тому +2

      +alecamal your correct. thanks for explaining that to him, because if no one did, I was going to haha

    • @alwaysarmed88
      @alwaysarmed88 8 років тому +6

      Orlando Pockets I'm not a rook. I've worked construction for most of my life. How will it not be accurate? The outside of the scribed mark will be perfectly measured.

    • @alwaysarmed88
      @alwaysarmed88 8 років тому +6

      He is right and you are wrong orlando. Eater way the metal end or the gap works to compensate for the 1/16th of an inch. Pushed in its the metal ens works as the rest of the tape measure. When hooked on an edge or something you can't use the metal edge, so it spaces 1/16th of an inch making up for the rest of the tape measure. I have no idea how you can get it messed up. Like I said I've worked construction for years and have used most of these tricks. I am able to piece stuff together to make it look like it's never been cut using these tricks. So go somewhere else with your know it all, trolling self

    • @KingOfErehwon
      @KingOfErehwon 5 років тому +7

      Patrick, you missed the point. If you PUSH against something, you will still get an accurate reading because the first inch is 1/16 short, but the hook itself is 1/16th. However, if you take an OUTSIDE measurement, the hook will be out of the way, so the tape will expand that extra 1/16th to give you the exact measurement.
