I said " come and eat" only to our Cooper once he ran in the house! Works every time.

My ol boy was extremely smart. His picture is my profile picture. My wife after a week told me that he understood everything she said. She was scared of him at first cause of the bad rep that bull breeds have. He could see into a person's soul. I miss him terribly.

I’m alway amazed at how intuitive they are and how much they really pick up on. For example: my little 4 legged daughter knows based on what clothes I’m wearing if I’m leaving for work without her, going somewhere in the car she she can accompany me or just taking her for a walk.

My dog, Zoey, is very smart (but can also be very dumb sometimes). She knows her name, my name, my sister's name, our parents, our neighbor, "walk" (we have to spell it or she gets all excited).

We had a shihtzu that figured out words we spelled. We used synonyms. She figured those out. We spelled synonyms backwards and she figured that out. Finally we wrote down things like, going to the vet, and only that worked.

I forgot ... she also picked up all spellings and words despite saying them in a hushed, boring tone....which dogs should ignore.

Dogs will understand any word that is repeated on a regular basis and is associated with something specific. For instance, the word “treat” in my home means a special dog snack, and the dogs respond enthusiastically. The word “dinner” or “eat” has the same effect as does “go outside?” and “leash”. They even know that “bad dog” means bad dog despite us NEVER using punitive measures on our pets, but the gruffness and displeasure in our tone makes them understand they’ve done something wrong. These animals want to please you because you are the source of their food, snacks and entertainment. They’re not stupid by any means, and as the saying goes “they know what side their bread gets buttered on”.

Our old yellow Labrador knew all his toys by name! “Dyson, get pink dolphin” and he’d dig out his pink dolphin! His favourite was a lamb I bought him for Easter! That was ‘lamby’ and he knew where lamby was at all times and his first toy was Bagpuss… again, he knew where it was all the time! These toys are on top of his casket on our bookshelf…. 😢 he passed in January 2023 at the tender age of 9… he’s my UA-cam photo… that’s Dyson aka baby dog, coz he was the youngest of our pack…. I miss you baby dog 🐾😢

It's heartwarming to hear how smart Dyson was, knowing each of his toys by name! I saw your UA-cam photo of him! what a sweetie 🐶❤️

my dogs, labradoodles are very affectionate. i whisper sweetly, i love you baby and good boy and good girl. i just want friends, not trained robots. they are potty trained, we have a large fenced yard, they spend most of the day indoors, free to go anywhere, no crates. they have lots of toys and are never alone, we are retired.doggy heaven.

@@samwilliams1142 that is awesome that you use your cane to show him things maybe vibration would help to what kind of baby do you have? And how old is he typing I'm not typing it because I am blind, I use voice over and sometimes it causes mistyped words. Please forgive me. What breed and how old is your baby

my husband and I were having a casual discussion and he mentioned a downed tree on a hillside behind our property...thinking in terms of firewood I responded when he said it was cedar..."cedar" I asked????? both dogs excitedly jumped up from their relaxing beds and ran to the window...we were both puzzled until we figured it out See Deer

Teaching your dog to understand words can be done by association and repetition and rewards. They do learn.

I bet time changes mess with some dogs. They are used to getting dinner/walk/whatever at a certain astronomical time, then it goes off by an hour when we change clocks.

    • @DoggyDrifts

Definitely! Dogs are creatures of habit, so time changes can really confuse them. Thanks for bringing up such an insightful point! 🐕⏰

Cats DO understand when you talk to them.. My cat was a chatterbox, and didn't have a problem telling you when she was upset, happy, or wanted to play, and you had better listen!
