  • Infinity speakers once sported two tweeters, one in front and one in the rear. Why? This doesn't happen too much on other speakers.

    4:58 - 5:10 is exactly what you get from Open Baffle Mid / Bass drivers as well. Controlled directivity is what it is all about... so I really don't understand your comment concerning Open Baffle Bass drivers (Sub-Bass drivers) for IF done properly (Legacy Audio, GR Research, Spatial Audio, Lexicon) it is simply Bass to DIE for! I have owned the Infinity 9 Kappa's when they first came out and I went from an Appartment :( to a converted Industrial building with an open floor plan and 10.5 ceilings and WOW what a difference the 9 Kappa's were in the new space. So Yeah, Open Baffle (any many Dipoles) need space to breathe, i.e. need space to do their thing!

    I have a pair of Infinity Column II speakers, bought around 1978. I'm not certain, but this might be the first Infinity with a rear-mounted tweeter. Does anyone know? I demo'd them against a pair of JBL Centuries for several hours before choosing the Column II's. They seemed slightly more open to me at the time, which might have been due to the rear tweeters.

    My mother has a pair of Infinity WTLC which I absolutely adore. As a living room speaker, they're amazing. They have a presence that carries through the whole house. I'd like to think the dipole drivers have something to do with really placing the sound in the room. This was a big impetus in my making a copy of the BD-Pipes full range speakers about 10 years ago. Gosh do I like them.

    Peter Snell was also keen on rear-firing ambience-adding tweeters. The later Snell speakers designed by Kevin Voecks had switches to turn on or off the rear tweeters. I tend to turn off the rear tweeters, and even with Magnepans, I like them better with less of the rear-firing waves bouncing around the room - which means room treatments behind the speaker.

    First off. LOVE the Infinity rs-iiib’s I pulled out of my dads storage, amazing sound after a re foam job, components made in the 80’s I think were just so ahead of their time and it’s unfortunate cds killed that R&D budget. I can’t imagine if Infinity, Denon etc. kept that track. I do dream of your infinity’s being the next upgrade I make in 5-10 years. Nothing in between. 😂 Side note, Apple trees and peach trees will give lots of fruit when they’re planted with other trees of their kind right next to them. Just a little something I’ve learned. 2 or more will do it.

    Electro-Voice implemented a rear tweeter -- with a higher crossover point and lower level than the front tweeter -- in their Interface A bookshelf speakers back in the early 1970s. I had a pair, and the effect of that extra tweeter was fairly subtle, but it did add a sense of larger image size and spacious ambience. IMO it's a good idea if it's done right.

To best of my recollection, It had about the same general dimensions as a 'KLH 6'. It used a 10'' Accordion Surround Woofer ("RtR" ? ) and TWO 'Seas' Aluminum Dust Cap Cone Tweeters - One FRONT / One BACK. They left a great impression on me. Because during the "Jurassic Period" ; I sold Audio, for my livelihood. They were an immediate "go to" speaker for a Customer, "on a budget". I believe they sold for less than $300 a pair ... Isn’t a rear tweeter a bit of cheat? I’m know it makes the speakers sound great - space, air, imaging - but the music didnt “sound” that way when it was recorded. Is accuracy an issue?

    • @nickparkin8527
      @nickparkin8527 4 роки тому +1

    • @NoEgg4u
      @NoEgg4u 4 роки тому +3

      @Vincent Gizzi
      You are 100% correct.
      The additional rear firing tweeter adds only time smeared distortion. Albeit, an ear pleasing type of distortion.
      If you want a truly accurate soundstage, then you should not use a rear firing tweeter. But most people, including audiophiles, are not purists.
      A visit to Best Buy (and similar stores) often reveals TVs with the brightness turned up. It catches the eye. It is not natural. But a lot of people go for it, and use that setting at home.
      When I visit one of my friends, I find his TV to have an unrealistic display. But it does look very good. It is his TV, and it makes him happy. I see it as having too much salt on your fries. But a lot of people love to over-salt their fries.
      I tune my TV to look natural, and my stereo, too.
      Cheers!

      Everything is a cheat. From the mic it was recorded into to soundboards, compression, auto tune, time aligning, reverb, EQ, recoded on format... I don't understand the word "cheat" in audio. Isn't the real goal is for it just to sound as good as it can? For some of the stuff people do, putting tweeters in the back of a speaker for a tiny gain is not earth shattering.

    • @NoEgg4u
      @NoEgg4u 4 роки тому +1

      @@finscreenname Why did you write that you do not understand the word "cheat", when you gave 7 examples?
      I agree with you that putting tweeters in the back of a speaker is not earth shattering. So let's both gang up on the person that made that claim. Please point him out.
      I also agree with you on all of the crap that the studios do. I wish that they would refrain from all of those practices, unless a specific need arises. For example, use autotune sparingly, to emphasize a crescendo, or some other interesting sound image. But it should be the exception -- not the rule.
      All of the EQ, and reverb, and compression, etc, ruins the music.
      I seek out music that minimizes the amount of the graffiti that the mixing and mastering engineers color the sound with. And I seek out audio gear that does not compound the problem. I cannot do anything about the music that is already contaminated by poor studio work. But I can keep it from getting even worse.
      I will not purchase a speaker that has both a front and rear firing tweeter (unless the rear firing tweeter can be toggled on and off).
      Cheers!

      @Art DIY I bought these because of Lukasz Fikus, the brains behind Lampizator. I followed him when he was a DIY blogger before he started his company. I have owned two of his DACs, both fantastic. He also designs speakers for the do it your selfer, and he has made his favorite design into a commercial product, the Fikus Electric P-17. The problem is, he only sells it in Europe, so I decided to build my own. The best part was that I already had everything I needed except for the tweeters and the crossover. They do not call attention to themselves, and I can hear an extra 2khz with the ribbons than I can with my electrostatics, which are good to 20k. They are good from 1khz to 40khz, so I can, and have, run them with my 15" woofers in a two way system. I prefer the speaker as a three way with a big Altec horn as the midrange.

    The addition of a rear firing tweeter is generally use for:
    -- overly damped rooms.
    -- producing pleasing phasey phenomena in its output.
    The additional rear firing tweeter could make for a more enjoyable listening experience, but know that it adds only distortion to the sound field, as its contribution is smeared in time.
    When I write "distortion", that does not imply crummy sound quality (speaker designers would not include it if it did that). Technically, however, it is distortion.

      NOT necessarily. For It's, a " case by case " situation. For example, If it's for a " super tweeter"; crossed in somewhere above 8k to 12 k . It could give more High Frequency extension, without Smearing the Top End of the Forward Facing Tweeter. Caused by the "Comb Filtering Effects"; caused by Not just a typical 6db order "x-over" But of Great Import is ; Is It's Placement on or in, the Speaker Enclosure.

      @@RoaroftheTiger If there is a front firing super tweeter and a rear firing super tweeter, there is no chance, none, of avoiding time smearing.
      There is no possible way for the same sound, being produced by two different drivers, one firing forward, and one firing backwards and reflecting off of the rear wall... there is no way that both sound waves will reach your ears simultaneously.
      The time smearing will not sound bad. It will probably sound very good. No one would design a quality speaker to sound bad. But it will be a form of distortion.
      For folks that pursue time aligned sound with zero distortion, they will not want such a speaker.

Another way is to have open cell foam between two pieces of material, on the outside quarter of an inch of MDF an inch and a half of foam and then hardboard the ones with the holes in it ,, usually these come quite thin 5 mm or so... but could be glued together 3 sheets holes lining up allowing sound waves to pass through the holes into the foam would work specially well on the front and back baffle. I think better would be to have the hardboard on both sides this will take way the boxy of the speaker. Just two layers of hardboard about 10mm thick either side of the sandwich, a thinner box is a better way to go you can still put some bracing in crucial areas to give it rigidity. Anyway there's some food for thought. See what your speaker guru thinks that ha ha

    Deer! The deer love our peaches! They don't much bother the apples and pears.
