Bless you, Paul, for getting this to NicknLex...tragically underrated Billy Joel song when it's actually one of his finest...As a self-taught play-by-ear pianist I enjoyed playing this almost as much as "Firth of Fifth" and did so at every opportunity...Moreover, his lyrics in this are just "next level" as Nick would say...and FYI, Alexia, back then the NY subways didn't have tickets to scan, but metal subway tokens that looked and felt like coins about the size of a quarter which you put in the turnstile for your access...In the mid-70's they were copper-colored...Around the perimeter on one side it said "GOOD FOR ONE FARE" and on the other "NEW YORK TRANSIT AUTHORITY"...In the middle on both sides was "NYC" with the "Y" die cut out so there was a space you could feel without looking so you could distinguish it from coins and pull it out of your pocket when you needed it...
Most excellent choice... I saw Billy a few times at his peak, incredible concerts. I don't know if I'd enjoy seeing him live today, the band is a step down, and his voice isn't the same. Check out "New York State of Mind" live at the Grey Whistle test from 1978, that will make up for not going to to see him live today.
His best song lyrically, and Billy Joel has acknowledged it as a personal favourite. An almost perfect statement on the nature of life for many people.
This may be his best lyric. You will have such a great time seeing Jon Anderson and The Band Geeks. I've been following the Geeks for several years and they're the best musicians on the planet.
Billy Joel is probably one of the most talented artist, from a song writer, piano player and singer. Does it all!! So many great songs! Too many to count!!
This album was the first of Joel's albums recorded at A&R Studio in Manhattan, high above the street corner diner shown on the cover of the 52nd Street album. Elton John also recorded his live album 11-7-70 there, and Paul McCartney used it for his Ram album, and before that Frank Sinatra recorded there. Great history, but in Manhattan things change, and the building was demolished.
Given your affinity for jazz, if you haven't heard "New York State of Mind" you really must watch the Old Grey Whistle Test live performance -- one of Billy's most legendary cuts.
you have officially reached 101K subscribers, Congratulations to the best UA-cam reaction channel and to two wonderful people, Love to the two of you.❤
Songs in the Attic is a live album of songs from the first four pre-The Stranger albums. I prefer the live versions to the studio versions. It's like a greatest hits of his early albums.
Great album. My favorite song on the album. The people on the cover represent the characters in the songs on the album. I highly recommend you do a full album review at some point then look at the cover to match up the person(s) with the song.
My daughter is named Leyna after a Billy Joel song. She became a big fan mostly of her own volition. We traveled to West Point near Highland Falls to watch my nephew play football. She insisted on driving through Highland Falls with this song blasting. Windows down, of course.
Billy was asked by an audience member at a Q&A he held at Berklee College of Music in Boston, if there was any particular song of his where he felt that he has really turned a corner or taken things to the next level (or words to that effect, as I cannot remember verbatim how the question was posed) and he said Summer, Highland Falls.
While "Turnstiles" is a really good album, it didn't have Phil Ramone who produced Billy through his best years so the performance is a little lacking. If you like the studio version, you must check out the live one from "Songs In The Attic" (1981) which is much more alive. The whole reason he released that live album was because he had a great band and wanted to give songs from this era their due (most of Turnstiles is represented on Songs In Attic). Billy Joel is always a great pick, nice reaction guys!
Wow...might be my favorite Billy Joel song, and NO ONE ever reacts to it! Great request, Paul!
Same here. Heard him do it live and it was a transcendent experience.
Try "I loved these days". Another great Billy Joel song.
❤
One of my favorite BJ tunes.

not his best but a great song .

Billy wrote this after moving from Los Angeles back to New York.
Beautiful song! I always love some Bill Joel! Awesome request Paul!!
"Zanzibar" or "Rosalinda's Eyes" next please. Both are spectacular ear candy.
Rosalinda's Eyes is my favorite deep cut from the Billy Joel catalog. Also, it proves he can do any genre.
Great ones too!
The live version in Songs In The Attic is a favorite. Check it out!

Saw Billy when he toured this album in 76. He played a local college in the gym. We sat on the floor next to the piano. Was amazing.
Congrats on your 100k! Great job!
The live version of this song on Songs in the Attic is fantastic.
Great choice Paul! It's been a long time since I heard 'Turnstiles' so this was a super reminder. Thanks NicknLex, 100k and counting....

❤Billy❤
Paul! I got to see Billy 5/13/2017 at Dodger stadium..great show over 2 hours
The Piano Man wrote some great lyrics. Everyone can relate to them.
This one done early in his career is among Billy’s very best.
Each character on the cover of Turnstiles represents a song, although I appreciate not much will make sense unless you see the cover.
Please Do "Zanzibar"... I´m sure you´ll loooove it...
Listen to this live on songs in the attic, it’s superior
Seems pretty consistent on recent set lists. Seems to be a song he likes.

When I was in the States on the 4th of July, I must of heard Piano Man 10 times in a couple of days, but I love it, so I was ok with it!

You guys have to do Goodnight Saigon and do the live one.
Lyrically and emotionally one of the hardest hitting songs ever.
The simplicity of this arrangement makes it timeless. Just a few instruments here - more would have damaged the song.
Hola chicos!
Todo muy lindo pero, cuando seguimos con el concierto del Indio????
Piano Man ha almeno 80-90 gioielli ... Specialmente " live .....,, Talento Totale questa e I Love these days sono per me " speciali" "perfette"
