I got the same feeling about this episode, about it being an analogy for death. While the one thing I dont personally like about the analogy is that after the winter wrap up, Tank will be back, or is at least presumed to be coming back because its only hibernation and not death. I think instead of an analogy for death, we can use an analogy for "loss". The loss of a beloved friend moving away. The loss of a beloved family member moving away. Something that would take something beloved away for a short period of time rather than the permanence of death. Yes Rainbow did go through the 5 stages of grief, however grief is not just expressed when someone dies. We can grieve even when we know that something is coming back to us. So I'd suggest that the episode is not about death, but about the broader concept of grief. Yes grief can be used to explain death better, however I like the more mature idea that we can grieve over more than just death

Thyri Carver I was thinking death when I watched it, but ya the fact that he would come back kinda ruined that for me. I never thought about grieving over a loss other than death, thanks for that.

Yeah. I know it isn't truly the topic of Death. This is MLP we are talking about after all. Ill be surprised if Hasbro/DHX even bite the bullet on the topic of actual death,

I like Tank's interaction with Rainbow in this episode. The smiles Tank gives his owner are a great example of this. I fell like he knows Rainbow will miss him dearly, and the smiles Tank gives her are one of reassurance.
Also, DAMN YOU CINDY MORROW! WHY MUST YOU CAUSE ME TO GET FEELS!?

Ryan McFly Tank's expressions reminded me of when my cat was going to be put to sleep and I was allowed to say goodbye to him before he was taken to the vet. He purred even though it must have taken a lot of effort, and his eyes were still bright and happy, and... I really shouldn't be making myself cry. I have to go out in public soon.

I really loved this episode, Dash episodes seem to be really awesome lately. I particularly enjoyed that it was Fluttershy, Dash's longest friend, who knew her enough to give her the talk that she needed.
Destroying the weather factory was classic comedy. Though I suppose that will vary from person to person.
What people need to remember is that the Element they represent isn't one sided. Pinkie Pie has had numerous issues with not knowing the proper time and place for laughter. RD is loyal, but loyalty and stubbornness are cousins. The difference is what you are pushing towards.
RD was emotional this episode. Rainbow doesn't do emotions. She can't act 'girly' or 'weak', because it doesn't fit her perceived image. So, she got very attached to Tank, and when she couldn't get what she wanted from the situation, her mind did anything it could to try and not deal with the emotional turmoil. On that note, she sought to avoid it.
I do see a lot of people disliking Rainbow for this episode. But hating RD for this episode is like hating Rarity for 'Suited For Success'. Yeah, they did bad and foolish things over the course of the episode, but it lead to very important character growth. I mean, think about it like this. Have we EVER seen Rainbow Dash cry? Like this?

Prim Roan I'm glad someone else referenced "Suited for Success". The scene I thought was the funniest was the exchange between Pinkie, Twilight, and Applejack during Rainbow Dash's emotional breakdown toward the end of the episode. Very reminiscent of the "crazy cat lady" line in Suited for Success which occurred while Rarity was in a similar state of despair. That, oddly enough, was the line that originally led to me getting hooked on the series.

    • @Undomaranel
      @Undomaranel 9 років тому

Prim Roan The reason I don't appreciate RD episodes like this as much as the other ponies is that RD tends to go overboard, commit crimes and felonies, and yet never pays for the consequences. Like in 'Read 'em and Weep'- RD breaks and enters and steals from a hospital, disturbing the peace of recovering patients and waking everypony in town up. Does she ever face consequences? No! Twilight jokes about petty theft, and RD gets to go read in her room with the privilege of free access to Twilight's library. Why doesn't RD have to answer in part to the law? Can't we see some scenes of her doing community service or something?
How about 'Rainbow Falls'? She flat out lies to everypony to avoid conflict, mocking anypony injured. Any repercussions for that greater than Twilight giving a guilt trip? Nope. All of her behavior culminates in 'Tanks for the Memories' where RD selfishly destroys the weather manufacturing station. She literally threw off the "natural" balance of the seasons, *worldwide*, by sabotaging the water supply. It takes weeks of training and careful climate planning for Cloudsdale to get water to create winter (see 'Hurricane Fluttershy'), so kudos to the weather pegasi for dealing with this catastrophic meltdown.
On the opposite end, Rarity in 'Suited for Success' breakdown came at the expense of herself. She didn't let anypony down, cause any social destruction, or commit any crimes. She grew because of the interactions between her and her friends, and her second chances to improve. Fluttershy's breakdown in 'Filli Vanilli' was caused by Pinkie's criminal behavior. AJ's family had to build her a new barn when she went completely overboard. Twilight's breakdown in 'Lesson Zero' did lead to mass mayhem, possible illegal spellwork, etc. However, Twilight is immediately reprimanded by the Sun God herself and faces punishment before her friends step up and take partial blame.
tl;dr Rainbow needs to face consequences for her criminal behavior before I can truly appreciate her focal episodes. The others have, so why not her? Why aren't they allowing RD to grow from realizing the damage she's causing?
Seriously... Double Rainboom had RD realize the destruction she caused better than the canon show.

Beth Goldstein Yay, I'm not the only one who heard that! I have a feeling that it was suppose to sound like a mix of Mission Impossible and Rainbow Factory. I really don't think it was purely coincidental. But hmm... I don't know. I listened to all three again, and it's hard for me to tell. FancyCat I doubt they are coincidental, as variants of the Mission Impossible theme has been used before, but this time it is slowed down to the same beat as Rainbow Factory, and also uses "darker" notes, like RF. As I see it, the two was blended together.

Your clapping at Cindy Morrow was what I did as well!
Without showing a death, she showed a death.. and the journey of the loved one that has to live with the loss.
I actually cheered for Fluttershy when she showed her kindness with tough love. She has learned her lesson from Seabreeze.
The fact that RD was basically burying her pet in the show was just so perfect.
I had to do that for a beloved pet and that hit home.
Never have I loved an episode of MLP for making me sad like this one.

You're reviews are fantastic. Your calm tone and your way of interpreting the episodes is very inciting, not to mention pleasing to the ears. Makes you stand out among reviewers who express their delight or anger in an over-the-top way in order to get their point across and make their videos entertaining. I'm not saying that's a bad thing - I love the Nostalgia Critic as much as the next guy - but you're style is more unique and it's great how you have your own way of reviewing which is effective and makes people think a little more deeply about the episode.

I'll say that the episode was almost TOO good at delivering a lesson on death. When Dash let loose with the waterworks (her own, not the cloud factory's) at having to say goodby to Tank, my eleven-year-old daughter also started crying saying how she missed our cat that we had to put to sleep a year ago. The death/hibernation parallel was so blatant and strong it actually brought my daughter to tears while watching a show about colorful ponies. And while she recovered quickly, I don't think this will be an episode she will want to re-watch any time soon.

What I like about Season 5 up to now is that the writers are not just focusing on keeping the fans entertained with their flashy animations and humor, but they are now delving to life lessons with even deeper meanings. This episode really showed me what "loss" and 'acceptance" should really be. :)

Rainbow Dash is my favorite character and this is my favorite episode so far! I have been waiting ever since the series started to hear Rainbow sing an entire song on her own. Yes, I do believe that this episode was trying to explain the grieving process through Tank's hibernation and I will admit that the comedy may not have been perfect, but part of the reason I love this episode so so much is because Rainbow Dash cried. This is the first major time in the series for her to do so and I almost cried with her given the circumstances. It was a really touching moment for me as I realized the important role her pet played in her life. I hope to hear Rainbow Dash sing a song alone later in MLP, but this episode and that song are both truly my favorite so far in the entire series!

The death analogy did not escape me in this episode, in fact this episode opened up a old memory of mine that dealt with the death of a pet I once had back when I was 13. It hit me harder when Rainbow was crying, much like did when I made the desicion to let him go.

This is one of my favorite episodes of the series for many reasons. RD gets her own song, it deals with a heavy topic very well, the FEELS, and I liked the comedy bits. Tanks for the memories is AMAZING~ I love it for the idea of teaching the stages of accepting death, but also for how it shows Rainbow Dash's loyalty at its best in the series. Her passion, devotion, and loyalty to her friends, plus the idea put forth in "Putting Your Hoof Down" that the thing Rainbow Dash hates the most is being alone finally gets put forth in full display. She hates the idea of being alone and Tank hibernating and her loosing the pet she only got a few months prior she had grown such a strong bond with would naturally put her in a extremely emotional mindset and pretty much justifies her actions in this episode. It's probably the best episode in the series in showing why Rainbow Dash truly is the best pick for the element of Loyalty. Plus the skit with the Pegasus was one of the funniest things I've ever seen in the entire series XD it's like they were poking fun of themselves with how the ponies were all named after random things related to their race and what they do, it was glorious

Doc you hit the nail right on the head. Every time they mentioned hibernation in the episode I kept on thinking about the death of someone instead. We journeyed with Rainbow through her grief and came out the other side. Just two months ago I lost my grandfather, it took me a while before I was finally okay again and then this episode came out, and it spoke to me on so many levels. Absolutely beautiful work done by DHX and the rest of the crew, and thank you Doc for giving your thoughts on this and bringing it up to people to be more easily seen. More than dealing with the loss of a loved one like a family member... I saw this as that painful decision that it is time to put a beloved pet to sleep. If you think about it the episode starts with Dash thinking there's something wrong, Twilight represents outsiders who don't see as much of our pets day to day behavior and wouldn't recognize subtle hints. When a pet is sick often you don't notice for a very long time because they will hide it from us. We then cut to Fluttershy, who does actually even tell Dash that Tank's heartbeat is a little slow. Of course this is then explained by his need to hibernate, but if you replace hibernation with "You should put him to sleep" Dash's anger seems much more justified. Dash then immediately seeks a second vet's opinion, a specialist, who tells her the first vets diagnosis was correct. Dash then proceeds to try various things to keep her pet with her a little longer, ultimately realizing that her pet is in pain and needs her to be strong enough to let go of them. Tank throughout the episode has much the resigned feeling of a sick dog who nonetheless still loves their master and wants to be with them to the end. Also Applejack's characterization makes more sense in this context. She is a farmer, and farmers in general get less emotional about the deaths of pets because they deal with the deaths of animals from a very young age. She's frustrated that Dash is making such a big deal about it. Twilight's characterization also makes sense for the opposite reason. She's never dealt with the loss of a pet, has no idea how to deal with her grieving friend, has no experience to draw on so she can empathize with Dash. Fluttershy, having been in exactly Dash's position tells her exactly what she needs to hear to help her accept the decision she has to make. Fluttershy connects with her animals in much the same way Dash is connected to Tank. Don't get me wrong, AJ loves Winona but she loves her as a good pet. Dash seems to love Tank more as a best friend outside of her pony friends. So on my second watch of this episode I teared a little for Dash, because learning to put your feelings aside and do what is best for your pet is really hard. In my opinion this episode was meant to convey the loss of a pet but since this is a kids show they can't do that and so we got plenty of pop culture references combined with a subtle underlining theme. Props to the show staff for pulling this off. Well done.

This episode was deep to me, because I have been through those feelings what Rainbow just felt not long ago. Last summer my cat was really sick that parents said that we have to put it to sleep. It was so hard to me. The cat was in family over 13 years. First I didn't accept the fact, then I beg to extend its time and I wished to time to stop. Then I broke to weeping about it same way as Rainbow Dash and finally accept the true and my dad took the cat to a veterinarian. This episode made me remember those feeling again and even now I'm crying for it. Most of kids have pets and this episode is good teaching method about lost of love ones, especially lost of our pets. I learned it last summer and I hope every kid who watch this episode, learn it too.
And about Rainbows singing, I loved it! Best Rainbow solo in whole series :D

I think it's really heart wrenching. It's pretty rare for an MLP episode to focus on a theme on an emotional level than it's humor.
I'm guess the same feelings can happen to a person (mostly a child) when someone close (mostly a relative) has to leave home for a really long period.

Listening to your thoughts on MLP is always enlightening, Dr. Wolf. You often impart some idea that I had never thought of before, enriching my MLP-watching experience. This time it was specifically your observation that Rainbow Dash was going through the five stages of grief. I never would have seen that, but now this episode is even better! Thank you!
The part of this episode that stood out the most to me was Fluttershy's handling of Rainbow Dash's emotions. The rest of the Mane Six didn't really know how to help Rainbow Dash and were quite bewildered by her grief. Seeing a friend crying or depressed can be a very scary and frustrating experience. But Fluttershy, my hero, knew exactly what Rainbow Dash needed in those moments. Go Fluttershy!
I have been looking for a moment like this from Fluttershy for a long while. Her emotional sensitivity and her emotional intelligence makes her perfectly suited to support her friends in this way and I'm very glad she had this opportunity to shine brightly. We need more characters like her out there!

There's a lot to be said about this episode but honestly the thing I loved the most is just suddenly and cleverly it goes from a simple shenanigans episode with Rainbow seemingly acting over the top to when she breaks down and starts crying where we see just how much she loves Tank it's breaking her heart to see him going away and it makes the rest of the episode suddenly click and become a lot stronger because of this very human moment which is Cindy Morrows greatest writing strength, relatable emotion - I must say as well that although at first when you started on about the whole death metaphor, I thought you were looking a little deeply in to it, but when you mentioned hat it ends with Rainbow literally burying Tank, it gave me a lot to think about, a very interesting analogy Doc.
This episode started of as a very simple idea but in that classic MLP way, it bucks the cliché and gives that little extra meat that makes this show so great.
Something really interesting though is that at a panel at an England Brony convention a couple of years back, Cindy may of foreshadowed this episode as she said Tank was her favourite pet and she wanted to do an episode about him - I personally had no idea she was back this Season but it's great to see her back doing a wonderful job so far.

I can't think of a single moment in this episode that I didn't like. The only think that comes close is the song, which is normal for me seeing as I don't really care for the songs in the show. And even then, this was one of the better songs they've done. Aside from that, though, I have no problems with this episode, and I was actually shocked to see an episode handle such a subject with as much tact as it did. The representation of the 5 stages of grief was spot on. It also gave me a lot of respect for Rainbow Dash and even Fluttershy, who gets the ball rolling in the third act. Overall, this is not only my favorite episode of the season so far, it is in my top 5 of the entire series, possibly on par with Hurricane Fluttershy.
    Final score: 9.5/10

rushfan2596 I'm the opposite; there's barely any moments that I do like, which is such a shame. I wish that I could like this episode, but I don't and I'm struggling to understand why so many really like this episode, mainly because there's not enough good moments for me to get this episode's praise. Also, I thought the "who's on 1st" joke was really stupid, like a lot of the humor to me. Then there's the fact that Rainbow gets not enough punishment for her selfish/malicious actions. I can only give it credit to a couple funny moments, some new/funny facial expressions, and the emotional bits after Rainbow stops her f**king annoying crying. Overall, I give it a 3/10.

***** would you give RD a break? she has personally saved the Wonderbolts, saved Rarity three times, the rest at least once, kicked a full grown dragon in the face, infiltrated a dragon horde to watch over spike and saved him too, helped stop nightmare moon, Discord, Queen Chrysalis, Sombra, and Tirek. Saved Equestria just a little money there. Plus this is a cartoon so she probably could have destroyed all of cloudsdale and it would have been fixed tomorrow. ;-) Seriously though just because someone's pain seems trivial to you doesn't make it less important. We expect that kind of behavior out of Fluttershy and Rarity and they would likely get a pass from you, but if Rainbow has never had to deal with something like this or has a loss that she hasn't dealt with properly doesn't it put this episode in a different light? This episode is more about the emotions that are evoked rather than a silly plot line which is great for some episodes but not this one. Just food for thought.

In my opinion the most important part of the episode wasnt The fancy references, the song, or the deep message..
    The most important part...
... was that one background pony thats skating on the ice near the end of the episode...
    because the color scheme ..
    ...
    matches exactly with Scootaloos colors.

This episode.... It hit hard for me.... I mean really? I've HAD a pet that was terminally ill before and the fact they kept saying he was going to die, I kept fighting it and.... I REALLY sympathized with Rainbow Dash in this episode. Yeah, Tank wasn't dying, but he wasn't going to be around for a LONG few months due to hibernation and it hit ALL the stages of grief with her. Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and finally acceptance. All I know? This was one of those few episodes that touched me on such an emotional level because I've BEEN there.

I really liked the episode because I saw the parallels with dealing with the loss of a loved one. Tomorrow is the anniversary of my grandfather's death, and I could really relate to Rainbow Dash. I spent several days trying to convince myself that he faked his own death for some sort of elaborate prank, since he's a prankster (I'm using present tense because no way would he give up his pranks in Heaven!)
I REALLY liked Fluttershy's comment to Rainbow Dash. She's assertive without being mean, which shows continuity and character development. I've found that the most helpful part of the healing process is when the reality of the situation slaps you in the face. You have to allow yourself to cry. Tears are weakness leaving the body.
Castle Sweet Castle dealt with the loss of a home/transition to a new life, Tanks For The Memories dealt with the loss of a loved one. I'm sensing a running theme. Also, MLP needs to stop making me cry. I watch the show because it's cheerful and positive, but recent episodes are hitting a little too close to home.

Wonderful review, Doctor. I hadn't initially considered the parallels between Tank's hibernation and the loss/death of a loved one, but thinking on it now there are a few moments that could further support your theory. The best I can think of is the bit about Applejack "crying on the inside", possibly relating to the implied loss of her parents and the grief that comes with such a tragedy. Just a small note I thought of.
Can't wait to see your future works as the season carries on.

What I liked: 1) Fluttershy's assertiveness. Honestly when she came right out and told RD the reality of the situation, and told the others that she needed the push or else she would never face it, I genuinely clapped and said "wow". THAT is how you do assertive right with Fluttershy. She wasn't mean like in "Iron pony" episode or passive like in...well ...most episodes. She was just that right amount :) I do hope the fandom doesn't take that scene the wrong way and make her out to be Gilda. She did just the right thing :)
    2) Pinkie's Back baby!: Seriously! Pinkie is bringing all the comedy this season! Everything she did this episode was hilarious for me. Not using the door because their in a cloud home, the whole "Applejack cries on the inside, Twilight!", and the Hibernation thing? I was smiling every time she was on screen!
What I didn't like: Rainbow Dash....While i admire the stages of grief (which i thought right away in this episode) and the ending...RD just came off so mean and stubborn. I understand that she was going through grief but it felt like she was in denial mostly, and then sped through the other stages. This also makes me have a little distaste for the solo song, which sucks. The idea of RD's first solo song in the show is awesome but in the context of the episode..I'm not agreeing with what she's singing about. I think what she was doing is wrong, therefore when she sings about it, i don't like the song....

One word can describe this episode.... BRILLIANT!! I like how I wasn't the only one that caught the 5 stages of grief they cleverly inserted into this episode. Also I died when they actually used the "Who's on first" joke. And it shows in the song that she's doing all this for a greater cause. Not just to go sledding with Tank and stuff but so she doesn't lose him for the winter. Maybe not the most entertaining or funny but still one of the best overall. Yay for season 5 being completely awesome so far!! :D

The odd thing however was AJ not crying, if we get into the lost of her parents theory, RD feelings for Tank were not that strong as what AJ passed through her childhood, in Twilight´s case she understands and knows as Fluttershy that Tank needs to hibernate, Twilight knows best that Tank will be back in a few months. I loved they brought back Fluttershy´s assertiveness.

  • @DementedDuskull

The episode in general was fine. Though the fact that RD was crying over tanks hibernation and not the fact that she seriously damaged the weather factory really rubbed me the wrong way. She should've gotten at least some punishment for what she did. And no, the pain she got from the factory was not enough. That whole thing might've halted winter for other towns since repairs and whatnot. At the very least she should've admitted that she was the one who damaged the factory. The other thing that bothered me was he continuity. It does establish that fall comes before winter. So that proves that less than a year has passed between call of the cutie and fall weather friends. Also proving that equestrian years are indeed 3X longer than ours if each season happens 3X a year. It was 1. Winter wrap up 2. Fall weather friends 3. Hearths warming eave. All that said, why hasn't RD dealt with this yet? May the best pet win came before hearths warming eave so tank was definitely around by then. So RD either forgot that episode existed or the writers did. Since RD says this is her first winter with tank. that one line creates a pretty big plot hole within the story. Other then that. Like i said, this episode is just fine. (Not good or bad, just fine)

    • @brolytriplethreat
      @brolytriplethreat 5 років тому

I know this comment is 4 years old, but I believe some of the early episodes aren't really in chronological order. The one confirmed instance of this is Winter Wrap Up and Fall Weather Friends, but Hearths Warming might apply as well.
The writers have said that they specifically aired Winter Wrap Up first because both it and FWF depend on the concept that ponies change the seasons manually, but they believed Winter Wrap Up was a better introduction to that concept than Fall Weather Friends.
I imagine another few examples of jumbled around episodes is the Gala stuff(unless the Gala sends out invitations over half a year early, you know?) and a certain Spike episode in season 2.
Oh, and to a lesser extent, the fact that there were way more Friendship Reports in The Return of Harmony than were shown in Season 1

i actually found all the interactions between tank and RD made me want to laugh and cry at the same time. the comedy, for me at least, came from her extreme reactions as she made her way through the five stages and not some of the other 'forced humour' bits stuck in there. in all honesty i've not laughed so much at an episode in a long time, the scene with the tears at the end more so than any other bit, and maybe that makes me sound like a really bad person, but after i finished watching the episode i felt more like i'd been crying through it rather than laughing. and for me that felt strangely cathartic.
also, how cute is RD and tank anyway, the writers have given subtle hints about how affectionate RD really is when it comes to her pet, but this is the first time where she's had it all out in the open. it shows just how deeply she's able to care for others, even if she doesn't always come across that way and i think it was an important moment for her character arc.

I actually had the same idea regarding this episode might possibly be about dealing with the loss of a loved one. I enjoyed the writing for this episode because it shows Rainbow Dash, a character who I usually could care less for, in a very empathic light. In fact this episode brought up memories of when I was younger and my cat was slowly dying of old age. I went through the five stages of grief just like Rainbow Dash so I could totally emphasize with her in this episode. Fluttershy acted exactly how my older sister did. I will admit I actually cried as well so I give 5 Tanks on the whole writing of this episode.

  • @CalliopePony

Interesting interpretation about it dealing with death. I hadn't thought of that, but it does fit well.
I interpreted the episode as a commentary on people who put their own wants ahead of their pets' needs. There are a lot of people who treat their pets really badly without any malicious intent. People who put carnivorous pets on vegan diets, who confine space-needing animals in tiny apartments, who allow little children to "play" too roughly with animals. It usually leads to behavioral or health problems, and then the owners blame trainers and veterinarians for not "fixing" the pet and ignore advice they don't want to hear.
Fluttershy told Rainbow Dash that Tank needed to hibernate, that it was healthy for him. Rainbow ignored what was best for her pet because it clashed with what would make her happy.

And another excellent review! This is why you're best analyzer!
You're the first one I'm seeing who got it that this episode is a big symbolism of death and who understood the meaning of Tank burying himself into the ground at the end of the episode.
    You're amazing, truly amazing. :)
And I love this episode. It proofs Rainbow Dash as the true Element of Loyalty (once again, but much more than ever!), it got me into two crying fits, almost three, which is an incredible achievement, because it's hard to even get me to just shedding a tear and it has this brilliant, subtle death symbolism.
And of course, the song, that adds the cherry to the top.
It's wonderful and has the best dramatic the show ever had.
My second favourite episode of Season 5 and my favourite song so far.
I wonder, do you think this episode means that an actual death is coming up in this season and that the creators see this episode as preparation for the audience, especially the children?
I would love to hear what you think about that.

  • @waywardpony
    @waywardpony 9 років тому +2

I liked this episode. There are a lot of parallels with acceptance and grief, as well as how others deal with seeing their friends devastated by loss -- Fluttershy's tough love but soft heart, Pinkie's empathic crying, Rarity's inability to stand seeing a particular one of her friends cry, AJ's brooding... while Twilight remains almost unsure. The characters are all used well for the parts they play. It's all handled gently and very tastefully.
A number of songs this season have been somewhat pop-friendly, this one being no exception. While it didn't grab me, what the visuals and tone were trying to convey did, and Ashley Ball was singing with pretty much all her heart. I enjoyed her performance, not to mention... hearing Rainbow Dash cry like that is actually quite upsetting... it's enough to make me cry, actually.
This is a very sentimental episode, and will go up there with Apple Family Reunion... another that surprised me with its sentiment.

As for the lack of consequences, it _is_ weird considering she kind of did a terrorist attack on Cloudsdale.

Besides, as the Manager for the Ponyville Weather Team she should have one of the best appreciation out of anypony around for the consequences of her actions. Since the princesses had to clean up after Rarity in 'Manifestation Inspiration,' I'm surprised Dash doesn't seem to have any clean up to do here. I read some viewers being hooked on Twilight's Winter is Coming line as a shout-out to Game of Thrones. But I don't watch GoT and I recognize and love the Grinch reference a lot more. I also personally enjoy the Who's On First routine between the Pegasi.
The Stages of Grief don't necessarily have to involve the death of someone, they can apply to almost any situation of loss. What's funny is that for almost 2 years, I was planning to write a fanfic involving my OC going through the Stages of Grief as he defends Equestria from Disney Villains. My story's Stages of Grief are more about being lost in another world, rather than about death. But this episode did the Stages of Grief idea so much better. Thank You, Cindy Morrow! Someday, I might finish my own story for better or worse, but I'll still give this episode a lot of praise!

My 2 year old hamster Benny died earlier this week so I saw a lot of my own feelings in Rainbow. I've had a lot of animals in my life but it is never easy to suddenly have to deal with losing them once you've fallen in love with them. Benny lived longer then most other small pets I've had in the past and suddenly being without him is not easy for me to adjust to. The message of loss in this episode is a good one for people of all ages who have or will someday have to deal with death. I wish I had a little more time with him but I know he died happy and loved and that's really all we can do. At least I get to keep the pictures ^-^

I thought the same thing. That this was going trough the acceptance of death. I had a rat who I loved so much and became ill. Seeing Rainbow Dash try her best to keep Tank from hibernating reminded me of all I went through to try to keep my rat alive. Each thing I did to try to get my rat better failed just like with Dash. It was so painful and hard. When you switch the scenario of hibernation to death it becomes all too real for me. I was pretty much like dash was when she was crying on her bed before I finally decided to put my rat down. The most heart-wrenching part of this episode was after Tank buried himself and Dash decides to stay by his side and read to him (one last time). She had already accepted fate but just one last time she wanted to do something familiar. Okay now I am just blabbing and working myself. I am probably the only person who cried at that part.

  • @JoeEnglandShow
    @JoeEnglandShow 9 років тому +2

Personally, I thought this episode had great humor. Subtle, too! That "Who's On First" routine was priceless, and Dash made some of the most meme-worthy faces she's had in years. Yeah, the jokes weren't hilarious, but I didn't think any of them fell flat either. Maybe it's just me, though.
As for the "Dash gets off scot-free" criticism... am I the only one expecting them to follow this up in a future episode? It happens sometimes, they just put stuff like that off until a little later. Remember PeeWee, Spike's phoenix? They could throw in a scene or a line about Dash doing community service, and there you go.
And as for the complaint regarding Dash's reaction to such a seemingly minor issue… like you said, it's likely an elegant metaphor for the grieving process. I was expecting to have a problem with it, but the characterization was so heartfelt it just worked out! I couldn't stay mad at Dash, seeing Tank dig himself into the ground was strangely compelling, and the final scene was really touching.
But within the context of the show, it's still strange, isn't it? After all, it's not a metaphor from the perspective of the characters… unless it's indicative of a particular quirk in Dash's personality. Because it's not the first time she's flipped out over an issue that others would consider inconsequential. Actually, this is great continuity! "Read It and Weep" went the same way, she went completely over the deep end and even committed a variety of misdemeanors because of something nobody else would take seriously. That's now a firmly established facet of her psyche.
So what does it mean? Well, in this case, I guess it could be a symptom of some past experience. Maybe she has abandonment issues which inspire her to cling to her friends. This could be the very thing that led her to embody the element of loyalty. She's determined to "save" the ones she loves because she's terrified of losing them. So, this episode could be about her working her way through that, accepting that it isn't always her place to fight the world for the sake of a friend.
But why does Dash sweat the small stuff? She's often flippant in the face of larger issues. So maybe she only panics when she feels that her self-image is threatened. In "Read It and Weep" she feared intellectual pursuits. Then there was the time she couldn't stand the idea of getting her hooves done at the spa… and now she goes nuts because she can't save her pet, a creature that depends on her. It's not that she wants to have fun with Tank, I think… it's that she wants him to be able to have fun with HER. And not moving Heaven and Earth feels like a failure.
So from all these examples we can guess that, maybe, Dash is simply a deeply insecure pony. As is often the case, a large ego is more fragile than it appears. She's anxious to reinforce the image of herself as a kind of super heroine, and is reduced to an almost childlike state when she fears that she can't live up to those childlike standards. And learning to let go of your loved ones is certainly an important part of growing up...
Growing up. Of all the lesson plans that this show aims to teach, maybe that's the one that suits Rainbow Dash the best.

Since everyone else is discussing the "analogy for death" angle, I'll only say that I did pick up on it and thought it was well-executed.
Personally, I have a higher opinion of the humor and, especially, the song. I think it's one of the best the show has made and I am not exaggerating when I say that. It sounds a lot like an Idina Menzel showstopper, a bit like "Defying Gravity" or "Let it Go" from the movie Frozen (which I do not care for, but does have great music). Closer to home, it sounds a bit like "My Past is Not Today" as well. The fact that RD got a song on her own and its such a good one is really awesome and I think it's just one more thing that makes this such a wonderful episode.

I loved it! I caught on to the death motif quickly and viewed it from that angle. The subtle humor was great for this episode because it was more of an emotional ride than a popcorn entertainment piece. This episode reinforces what I admire the most about Rainbow Dash, she puts her heart and soul into everything and every one she cares about. She will go to nearly any length to be with those she cares about with hardly any complaint. You also have to realize that Rainbow is slow to trust and (probably) slow to love, but once you have it it's near impossible to break. The song was very touching and it felt a lot like a FAMILIAL love song (though I might have my OC sing another version of that to RD), and I've already listened to it multiple times. While Rainbow's despair scene was a bit jarring and seemingly petty, in that moment it was everything to RD. We have to realize that people might be upset by things we see as trivial but it is important to empathize with them in order to help them past their pain. It also gets my fan-fic wheels turning on why RD reacted so severely to potentially losing her friend for a while. Over all it was a fantastic episode and I'm really enjoying the emotional and thought provoking style of this season.

I agree with your view that it was about death and actually I thought the same thing the moment I saw the episode title since "THANKS for the memories" is often used when saying a final farewell. I even tweeted at the start that I wondered if they were going to kill off Tank in that episode. Great review & consider me a new subscriber.

Egad! I can't look at this episode the same way after making the connection between "hibernation" and death. I am also enamored with Fluttershy's growth here. I can speak from experience on how debilitating it can be to let you grief go unchecked and un-confronted. It really was the kindest and best thing for RD to confront her grief.

I usually suck at analyzing when it comes to episodes with certain meanings behind it. When the episode was almost done through livestream, I saw few folks comment about "Tank being dead" or etc. It was odd, but thanks to you Dr. Wolf I can understand the whole "dead" part meant in another way around.

If I recall, you said in a past video how intersting and incredible it would be if MLP talked about this issue. I'm glad your wish was fulfilled.
Thanks for your video now I can rewatch it from a different angle

Thank you for your analysis, Dr. Wolf! As an adult, I wondered if indeed if Tank was actually nearing the end of his life cycle, especially with the title of Tanks for the Memories! I completely agree with your assessment that it does very well to serve as a teaching tool for children to learn how to deal with the loss of a loved one. This episode also brought back what drew me to the series in the first place, the aid in helping me to cry. Being an adult male, it's difficult to get the chance to feel the release of a good cry in daily life. It was definitely a highlight to see Rainbow Dash finally able to release all of her depression this way and deal with the grief of the loss of her pet, or hibernation as it is in this case.

I really enjoyed Ashley Ball's singing though the song isn't one that I would listen to very often. I enjoyed hearing her sing. Also my favourite part of the episode was when Dash was bawling her eyes out, not only did it break my heart to hear her son so much. But it shows the audience how much of a connection she and tank have made, and how much she actually cares for him.

I personally loved this episode, and it's mainly because I never expected they would even attempt something close to the subject matter. It's an important topic, and one that that perfectly implemented here with a Pet going to hibernate. At first I thought I knew it was going a certain way, but then she tried to make -christmas- winter from coming, and her attempts to keep her friend from leaving her life (even temporarily) I also think this shows off Rainbow Dash's Loyalty a lot too, and they didn't even need to utter the word to know they were showing the hardest part of Loyalty: Letting go.

I got the 'loss of a loved one' subtext. I was also thinking a lot about "Weekend at Bernies" (1989) while Rainbow Dash was dragging the somnolent Tank around.
Also at the Cloudsdale weather factory, storing lighting in a bottle? LOL

I am so with you Dr.! ^^
I have went though all of the grief stages myself 2 years ago in my depression. That's one main reason why I love this episode so much^^ For something to stand out to me the most is seeing Rainbow Dash crying that hard for the first time. Its not a good thing of course, but it shows us her emotional side for once seance shes always the bashful one. Awesome review Doc^^ your vids are always a pleasure to watch^^

I agree completely with everything you said, and I felt the same, they did an amazing job of representing the five stages of grief, and also I feel as though this episode could be used to help explain the five stages of grieving to a child who recently lost a pet or loved one (or even adults) and help them better understand it. I would the thing that biggest stood out to me was near the end, when Fluttershy said what she did in order to help Rainbow Dash accept it, and I agree that it needed to be done, even though not everyone feels the same. Also I loved how she and the others cried with her, so amazing and so sad!!

I really got that feeling as well, the episode being an analogy for the death of a loved one/pet, that crying scene seemed even closer to how you'd deal with said death, rather than just not being with them for a few months. Hell, I thought Tank WAS going to die until I realized MLP is never going to cross that line (like in A Bird in the Hoof.). It wouldn't surprise me if they originally DID intend for Tank to die (as in A Bird in the Hoof before they were forced to change it), but realized they were going too far and changed it to hibernate.

This episode meant a lot to me. I know what its like to lose a good friend, even if its not indefinitely, and it hurts. The worry that they will be different when you finally meet them again, the worry that something might happen to you or them and you wont see them again. I found Rainbow Dash's worries to be very relate able in the episode, and I particularly liked how Fluttershy treated it. I fully acknowledge that many times the best way to deal with a situation is to cry, sometimes the only way is to let it all out, no matter how much you want to keep it in. And sometimes the only way to be able to let it all out is to be pushed over the edge. Not only did the episode add a lot to Rainbow Dashs' character but it also showed that Fluttershy's character is changing also, that she really took the lesson from It ain't easy being breezy to heart, that sometimes you need to do something hard that seems mean, to be truly kind.

One can grieve over something or someone and them still be alive. Fluttershy, Pinkie-Pie and Rarity all make mention that Tank will come back in the Spring and what they will do for him when he wakes up. If this were an allegory for death, there wouldn't be any mention of him coming back at all. If anything, it's an allegory for loss. Such as a friend moving away, an older sibling going away to college, a parent or relative being deployed, having to give a pet away, a favorite teacher retiring, etc. I can think of several allegories that involve grief but not necessary death.

I caught onto the analogy for death pretty quickly, but when I was listening to the song, a few of the lyrics caught my attention, where she sings about not having to be alone and not having to say goodbye. It gives me the impression that Rainbow Dash has already lost someone before and that it affected her very deeply.

I actually liked and related to this, especially since I've lost a few pets of my own... I actually noticed the signs when I was watching through the episode. It was a nice to see the writers so conscious of what they were writing. And I hope to see some more clever hints in later episodes.

Death of a loved one. I had to put this episode away pretty quickly. Both this and the ep where Twili and Spike revisited the library's remains/memorial have had elements that remind me of Nanny (the grandmother that lived with me's) passing. I don't think I'll be able to make a review of those two at least for a while... I know I'll see her again, just like RD will see her turtle again, but still, it is hard.

I am so glad that to see that I wasn't the only person who saw this episode as a possible hint towards dealing with a loved ones death. This thought hit me at the point where Fluttershy told Rainbow Dash straight up that she was going to be petless. And as Rainbow was crying and shattering my heart wide open, I started thinking back to when my pet died. I cried and cried and thought I'd never be happy again. I was young at the time, and eventually my grief passed as it does, but I'll never forget. and this episode really woke up those feelings inside me.
This may not be the funniest episode of the season. But on a personal level it's going up at the top for the story it's telling. :)

Every time I see you got a new review up, I know there's a new episode, so I tend to watch that before you show so as to prevent spoilers and make my own opinion before seeing what others have to say. One thing I will say is that while I don't 100% agree with you I do see your points and I too caught the hibernation is a metaphor for death during this episode...particularly at the point where everyone starts crying. I thought it was pretty clever they did that, but, I do wonder if that was the intent all along or if it was just a really well done coincidence.
I also loved the little nods to season one and a more expanded look at the weather factory in Cloudsdale.
Also, my favorite moment in the episode
    Twilight: what about Applejack
Pinkie: Applejack cries on the inside, Twilight!
    AJ: It's True.

I'm not saying a thing about the episode except 1 thing, cause Dr. Wolf has said everything I have said on the episode but a few smaller details.
The thing I want t talk about is the part of episode 5 where Rainbow cries over that she is going to lose her pet (for a bit)...at that very moment...something happened in me...I cried and felt the feels. I have NEVER Cried in mlp before! EVER! and the only time I felt the feels was the episode "Flight to the finish" only cause I thought the story was about to take a turn to sadness. This episode broke me! Bravo DHX, Bravo.

The stages of grief was exactly what I saw in this episode. Honestly, it's hard to see anything else. It's especially telling during the song, when Rainbow Dash arranges for a group of pegasi to blow the fresh falling snow back into the cloud they were working with. The snow ends up in an infinity pattern, with no end in sight, at least until they figured it out offscreen. Just like this, no matter what Rainbow Dash did to prolong things, eventually they would come to an end.
Later on, when RD accepts what'll happen and starts crying, I like what they did with Applejack. Not only was it a funny line, but it also teaches that there's nothing wrong with you if you don't show your feelings on the outside, so long as you have them.
On the comedy side, though, I deeply enjoyed the pegasi "Who's on First" routine, and I couldn't help cracking up when Twilight said "Winter is coming." Who would have expected THAT reference from ponies? I do wish they had done more with Spike, though. I'm getting tired of watching him just take it.

Honestly as soon as i heard the title i knew it would be something relating to death so that's what really saved this episode for me i am really liking the more mature tone of season five i have a few issues here and there but the parts starting from rainbow dash crying over tank in her room to the end we're really the best parts for me
