2022 Sharing the Spirit of Aloha Gala - Fred Kinzaburo Makino and the Hawaii Hochi

The JCCH 2022 Sharing the Spirit of Aloha gala event was held on Saturday, June 25, 2022 in Honolulu, HI. We celebrated the legacies of four outstanding honorees for their contributions to the community and State of Hawai‘i. Meet one of our honorees:
SPIRIT OF JCCH AWARD: The Hawaii Hochi & Fred Kinzaburo Makino
The late Fred Kinzaburo Makino spent his life advocating for the rights of the Japanese American community, including those who worked on the plantation. He founded the Hawaii Hochi in 1912 to serve as the voice for Japanese laborers. Today the Hawaii Hochi remains the exclusive daily Japanese newspaper in Hawaiʻi. The Hawaii Hochi also produces the Hawaii Herald, an English newspaper for the Japanese American community in Hawaiʻi.
