Timothy David Snyder is an American author and historian specializing in the history of Central and Eastern Europe and the Holocaust. He is the Richard C. Levin Professor of History at Yale University and a permanent fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna. He has written several books, including the best-sellers “Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin” and “On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century”.
He is also the author of “The Reconstruction of Nations: Poland, Ukraine, Lithuania, Belarus, 1569-1999” and “Sketches from a Secret War: A Polish Artist's Mission to Liberate Soviet Ukraine”.

I finally can explain why I. as a Ukrainian, love and respect Tymothy Snyder and adore his lectures.
It is so simple. He s one of a few or possibly even the only person in the West that you listen and you feel they understand you in general as an average citizen of Ukraine. It’s like talking to a Ukrainian, we have the same understanding grounds, so we can talk deeper problems now and we can be seriously consider one another’s judgements. Without the common grounds of the basic understanding the further dive in topics doesn’t have sense.
I really treasure all I learn from Tymothy because I know I can trust his judgement and I know he managed to understand Ukraine successfully through a lot of work, professional detailed approach and dedication.

I think it's important to understand that "Rashists" is a term usually restricted to pro-Kremlin troops invading Ukraine, and the institutions that support that invasion. Inhabitants of Russia are just called "Russians". Native Russian speakers in Ukraine are recognised as Ukrainian citizens and usually also self-identify as "Ukrainians"; many of them are now switching to speaking Ukrainian in everyday life, because they no longer want to be associated with Putin's Russia. I've read countless stories from people in major cities like Kharkiv, Odesa, Dnipro, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia etc. who grew up speaking Russian, but decided to switch to Ukrainian last year due to the invasion.
Indeed, President Zelenskyy himself is a native Russian speaker.

Russian fascism, Rashism, is the most active fascism at this present time. East Europeans are acutely aware of the ultra chauvinistic character of Russian racism towards not only Slavic cultures, especially in respect to Ukrainians, but also towards Anglo-Saxons, Asians, Jews and non-white peoples.

Ah, I've noticed the word "rashism" in a lot of English comment threads and chats about the Russian full scale invasion of Ukraine as well.
& Intuitively I know what it means, bc pretty much everything in Russia's behaviour - including the kidnapping of Ukrainian adults & kids, putting them into Russian filtration camps, etc - points to trying to eliminate a Russian "enemy" by genocide like actions.
Yup it's true, lots of Ukrainians are learning English instead of and/or additional to Russian and they're very good with creating new words.
& These words fit perfectly to their current situation and their past (mostly historical) context ... btw I'm also not a native English speaker and I've to admit, sometimes I'm creating misunderstandings unintentionally.
His whole thing is unreflective praise of his personal likes and dislikes with zero scholarly freedom of thought. Some dishonesty. Blind activism at its most awesomely-crackpot cartoon. Sean Penn as a information-laden professor. Amusing, but terribly sad...
I especially appreciated the discussion about how the Left has been largely and bafflingly supportive of the Russian dictator. That was in the final half-hour.

The term "RuSSism" isn't exactly Ukrainian invention, it has been around at least since 1995, look up for an interview with Dzhokhar Dudayev from the First Chechen War.
P.S. Or was it "руссизм" (Russism) instead of "рашизм" (Rushizm)? Seems like I have to watch that interview once more myself. Anyways, I believe it predates current Russian invasion of Ukraine, likely it was around even before clandestine invasion of 2014.
Dudayev used russism without allusion to fascism or to the English name for Russia, whereas ukrainians use ruscism with such allusion and because of that they aren't pronounced the same

Russism has totally different meaning and emotional color. Not talking that for Ukrainians it also means russian trash word in Ukrainian language. My Ukrainian language teacher did not tolerate "russisms" in class. She was right. Many years after I still remember her, and appreciate she showed me the way how to love Ukrainian.
RashiZm( RuZZian fascism) is different word than RuSSism (RuSSian-chauvinism).---although excess chauvinism is a form of fascism.
RushiZm (or RashiZm or Rushism or Rashism) is a shortened compound word for RuZZian-fascism! ---i.e. Rus(sian-fas)cism--an "h" is added to get the right "sh" sound!---The "u" is also often replaced with an "a" to get the correct sound.
Thus: "roosism" (RuSSism---i.e. RuSSian-chauvinism) is a different word from "rashism" (Rashism--i.e. RuZZia-fascism).---But the meaning might be similar.
BTW: The double NaZi “SS” in RuSSia has been changed to “ZZ” since RuZZia has begun to use the new fascist “Z” half swastika symbol in the war against Ukraine!

I understand the depth of the Ukrainian Personality and History .... we ourselves in Ireland are still moving toward a United Ireland 😁👍🇮🇪 after such British Colonial History with The Good Friday Agreement, 25 years later....with a Border Poll/Vote which is permitted after 20 years of the GFA.
Irish ReUnification Progress and History has had to be very patient, esp within Democracy.
Now we are nearing that ReUniting of Ireland after a 100 years of forced Partition now.
This moment in History is Ukraine's now to achieve their Freedom and Country for the Future they want for their Citizens and Children, and to be truly free from Russia.

I love Snyder! I have learned so much from him. I will say though, that his unwillingness to call out Putin as a fascist has been somewhat of a frustration. Everything he says now that makes Putin a fascist was clearly the case back to at least 2014.
So I am glad Snyder also agrees with me now.
Now there is just one thing left that hunts me with Snyder. His unwillingness to call Trump what he really is. He is a fascist.
Snyder calls people fasicts for their thinking. So you do not have to do the acts. Dugin doesn't do any fascist acts. He just thinks and his ideas are fascist.
If you look at Trump, you easily can see that he is a fascist by nature. A wannabe fascist. The question is just, will Trump get his opportunity to be a full blown fascist.

We will worry about splitting hairs on Slava Ukraini when Russia stops dropping dumb bombs on residential areas and aiming Grads and Smerch at hospitals, schools and train stations.
The issue here is eastern Ukraine plus Crimea, which is historical Russian land since the 1700's to about 1922, and Russia having a naval base in Crimea since the 1700's. Then the USSR happened, with Russia being the big dog state of the USSR, Ukraine being another state. And, the Russian Ruling Elite don't want The West to have that land by way of Ukraine. It's prime real estate, with a substantial Russian history and ethnic-Russian population, and it's a core of Russian history, it's core Russian neighborhood. Russia is taking a stand on multi-polarity of the world, along with China, in counter to The West / USA.
Just wandered into this session thanks to a mysterious UA-cam algorithm. I get very excited when I hear brilliant minds discussing complicated subjects in detail (and I can actually follow), agreeing with philosophies and examining my own lack of understanding about historical events/current events. I did not hear the beginning of this, but I will definitely read Stewart's books, as I feel like my mind just had a very good morning "run."

I've been following professor Snyder on a number of channels. The depth of complexity and analysis puts most of the historians, analysts and commentators to shame. I especially appreciate his comments on the knee jerk dogmatic views of the leftists who have no such depth or complexity in what they spew as their views. Being likely that those people have never been in Ukraine, especially now, their 'opinions' have close to zero relevance to anything. I've always said that the philosophy and views of the far left move in a circle to meet the philosophy and views of the far right. They both have limited abilities for impartial analysis of anything.

I am critical of some of Snyder's comments, like his characterisation of Marxism in his Yale series on Ukrainian history, but his criticism of a part of the American left in their condemnation of American imperialism while they invent excuses for Russian imperialism in Ukraine and elsewhere is entirely correct, and I've criticised the same phenomenon in debates on social media.

And it is embarrassing how he pretends to rate Tymothy's words and works, again and again, saying "you did a good job by explaining this", and "you wrote many good books". I understand he is nervous, but it looks so unprofessional. And this animated background with the flag is freaky.

One circumstance leaves me a bit bewildered though: When it comes to history and facing the uncomfortable parts of history the interviewer agrees but I simply do not see that on his or maybe on ukrainian side in general -> maybe it is not the time for it but that 'slawa' trap of unconditional nationalism is real.
Btw. it were ukrainian nationalists who delivered my grandma to the SS and consequently the concentration camp on grounds of her ethnicity. The leaders of these men are now national heroes in Ukraine. As long as this is the case ( amongst other things that are not history at all and actually pretty similar to what shaped post soviet russia including the ideological construction htof a great, heroic, tragic national history) I can still support Ukraine in this war against an imperialist russia but I cannot agree with ukrainian self-perception.
Hopefully there will be more than 'slawa' nationalism in future.

The mix-mash of the west, as exemplified by the USA, Britain, and increasingly more of the West is a tragedy of indigenous cultures of the West. You know that Stalin ethnically cleansed Crimea of its indigenous population, the Tatars, in 1944, which is a crime against humanity. Hardly historically Russian.
And that the Russian Federation has recognised and guaranteed the sovereign borders of Ukraine. Derecognising a state is impossible in international law, and changing its borders by violence is illegal.
Snyder's nonsensical fuzzy definition of fascism makes it in fact an epithet. Fascism is essentially communism without the complete nationalization of the economy,. Party ideology is dominant, but private entities are allowed, as long as they are subservient to the ideology. And yes 1939 Germany, Russia and China fit the definition. Snyder avoids the definition, because it can also apply to the current US far-left's push in the US to subjugate institutions and corporate entities to its woke ideology of "equity." Snyder is part of it, to an extent, and a defender of many of these emerging policies, thus ironically he is a schizo-fascist. But he has a good understanding of Ukraine and of Russia, when not colored by his own political bias. Russia's aggression is inexcusable and Ukraine's territorial integrity and independence must be restored and ensured in the future. Ironically, it may also result in a weakened and possibly eventually smaller Russia finally becoming a European country.
Ineresting explanations on Ruscism and ruscist. When I first heard of it to me it was an amalgamation of Russian and racist, I didn't even at the time consider Nazism. In a way it might not matter as both racism and nazism often go hand in hand. But previously I had heard a lot about how Russia within the USSR and still today sees itself as superior on morals and quality over other people that were within their sphere of influence and domination, as a savior of Europe. So that is why I made the connection with racism first. Not sure about this supposed "colonial practices/history" of Germans. I know of no German who finds it easier to criticize Ukrainians than Russians, or who would want to. I grew up in Germany and find this suggestion not insulting at all, because I have never seen an inkling of it. I think in this point Timothy Snyder is mistaken in his opinion. He seems to convolute the current need of Germany to keep the power on with sympathies towards a nation or people. As much as I would like Germany to move faster on sanctions and such I can consider the realities on the ground without having to revert to some odd notion of colonial bias. These is no confusion, there is only dealing with reality of providing people with power.
